NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment Group is the latest to shift to Live+3D. Bravo, E!, Esquire, Oxygen, Sprout, Syfy and USA, will now report ratings based on Live+3 measurements, announced NBCU during TCA, with L+SD data distributed only for live sports/entertainment, specials and event programming. The group’s programming has seen significant lifts from Live+SD to Live+3, including 83 percent for USA’s Graceland, 81 percent for Bravo’s Top Chef, 80 percent for Syfy’s Dominion and 65 percent for E!’s The Soup. “Considering ever-growing use of DVR, VOD, digital and other non-linear viewing options, L+SD is merely a chapter in a much larger and more diverse ratings story,” said Liz Mahaffey, EVP, brand strategy. FX, HBO and Showtime have also given up Live+SD reporting.
Responding to a report that Rosie Perez is leaving The View after four months, an ABC rep said the co-host is in rehearsals for her Broadway play for the month of January, and “her status with the show has not changed.” The actress signed on for Larry David’s Fish In the Dark before she started on the morning show in September. On Thursday morning’s show, Rosie O’Donnell said of Perez, “She will be back here are her job, regardless of what you hear.” However the Perez situation plays out, expect co-host Whoopi Goldberg, recovering from a herniated disc, back enjoying The View on Tuesday.
William Shatner is courting a new audience: preschoolers. The TV vet will narrate Sprout space series Clangers, a reboot of the BBC stop-animation show from the 1960s. “William Shatner’s highly recognizable voice and humor captures the distinct charm of the show while bringing his own unique sensibility to the role of the Narrator,” said Sprout president Sandy Wax. Michael Palin (Monty Python) is also onboard the series, slated for an June 20 premiere at 11a on the net’s Sunny Side Up, and also running nightly at 8p with The Good Night Show.
E! renewed its first scripted series, The Royals, ahead of its March 15 series premiere – a move that came as a surprise to creator Mark Schwahn. “This pickup caught us all off guard,” said Schwahn at TCA. “I feel like if we’re not doing seasons five, six, seven, we’re making a mistake.” The net’s House of DVF also got a renewal for season two.
USA’s Benched won’t make it to season two. The courtroom comedy ended in December with an average 800,000 viewers and 300,000 among A18-49.
The Academy Awards nominees were announced Thursday, and Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel led with nine nods each. Among the nominees was Patricia Arquette in the Supporting Actress category. Arquette will be doing more than gown-hunting the actress stars in CBS procedural CSI: Cyber, launching Wednesday, March 4 at 10p. Oscars ceremony airs Sunday, February 22 at 7p on ABC; for a complete list of nominees go here.
John Hendricks, former chairman of Discovery Communications, announced the March 18 launch of an SVOD service developed by his independent content venture, Curiosity Project LLC. For $2.99-$9.99/month, ad-free CuriosityStream will deliver factual content that “addresses our lifelong quest to learn, explore, and understand,” said Hendricks. The response from content producers has been “very encouraging,” Hendricks tells Cynopsis. “We plan to partner with many of these producers on new productions,” as well as acquire rights on existing content. Does the service threaten linear? Acknowledges Hendricks, the founder of Discovery Channel, “Within the media industry, there are certain segments, such as linear cable and broadcast networks, that are understandably wary of the rapid rise of SVOD services like CuriosityStream. The consumer appeal of SVOD menus is quite overwhelming, especially if the viewing choices are delivered commercial free.”
Voting has begun for the Soap Actor pre-nomination round of the 42nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards. The actors proceeding to the Blue Ribbon Round will be announced February 4th.
Move over Millennials, there’s a new demo in town. What’s the difference between Gen Y and Gen Z, aka Generation Edge? “While many like to call Millennials a generation of ‘digital natives,’ Gen Z is truly the first to be born and raised in an era where digital isn’t compartmentalized – it’s infused in every single part of life,” Morgan Aceino, senior brand strategy for LA agency Omelet, tells Cynopsis. “Because of this, they adapt more quickly and have a whole new way of interacting with each other and the world around them.” To find out how to reach this important but elusive group, join Aceino and other experts in the demo for the February 28 Cynopsis webinar, “Generation Edge: Catching the New Wave of Viewers.” Details are here.
