Good morning. It’s Friday, January 16, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. To mark Martin Luther King Day, Cynopsis will not publish on Monday, January 19.

The NBA and BT Sport struck a multiyear expansion of their TV partnership to beef up viewing experiences for fans in the UK and Ireland. As part of the deal, which will begin with the 2015-16 season, BT Sport will broadcast up to seven live games per week throughout the regular season and the first and second rounds of the playoffs, as well as every game of the conference finals and NBA Finals in June, all appearing across BT Sport 1, BT Sport 2 and ESPN.
 
“Through the extension of our partnership with BT Sport, fans can continue to enjoy a wealth of NBA content and programming in the UK and Ireland,” said Elsa Memmi, NBA Vice President, Global Media Distribution, EMEA.  “BT Sport has proven to be the ideal partner to serve as an official TV destination of the NBA in the UK and Ireland and we look forward to collaborating further to provide fans with live NBA games, highlights, magazine shows, unique behind-the-scenes programming and more.”
 

ON THE AIR

CBS Sports Network locked in a multi-year deal with the Army Athletic Association that renews the channel’s rights to carry every home football game and select neutral site games. The five-year deal begins with the 2015 season and runs through 2019, providing a majority home football games to be played on Saturday afternoons beginning at noon. Additionally, a live web stream of all Army home telecasts will be made available free of charge to soldiers and military personnel around the world.

FOX Sports unveiled its broadcast lineup for the 53rd Rolex 24 At Daytona, which starts on FOX at 2p on Jan. 24. Bob Varsha and Brian Till will share hosting and play-by-play duties, with analysis from racers Justin Bell, Calvin Fish and Tommy Kendall. Chris Neville, Matt Yocum, Jamie Howe and Andrew Marriott report from the pits. Fans will have access to live coverage of the entire Rolex 24 At Daytona through a combined effort between FOX Sports and IMSA.com.

WWE and the USA Network are bringing back the reality series Tough Enough this year. "I am pleased to announce that USA is bringing back ‘Tough Enough,’ the action-packed competition reality show from the ratings juggernaut, WWE," said USA Network President Chris McCumber during the TCA winter press tour. "The show will have a completely new format, with live elements that will truly make this event television."

MLB announced that San Diego’s Petco Park will play host to the All-Star game in 2016, marking the first time since 1992 that the game has been played in the city. This summer’s game will be played in Cincinnati on July 14.

Golf Channel celebrates 20 years on the air this month and will offer viewers anniversary-themed initiatives that will be seen on-air and online on Saturday. GolfChannel.com content will include a first-person testimonial from Golf Channel anchor Rich Lerner about some of his favorite moments covering the game as well as a column from Morning Drive co-host Bailey Mosier, as well as photo galleries based on Golf Channel’s The Golf Book. On-air plans will include a Morning Drive appearance by Joe Gibbs, Golf Channel co-founder, on Saturday.

Speaking of golf, the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Golf Committees selected Eugene, Oregon (Eugene Country Club) and Sugar Grove, Illinois (Rich Harvest Farms) as the sites for the 2016 and 2017 Division I Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships. “With this year’s championship being held in Bradenton, Florida and with the selection of Eugene Country Club and Rich Harvest Farms, we are going to play in a variety of geographical locations over the next three years on nationally recognized courses, which is great for the growth of the championships,” said Mike Carter, chair of the Division I Men’s Golf Committee and director of athletics at Oral Roberts University.

Kroenke Sports & Entertainment announced the formation of KSE Outdoor Group as well as the senior management structure of its multichannel outdoor network, publishing and digital assets. The group represents the “largest multimedia portfolio in the world dedicated to the growing outdoor lifestyle” As President and CEO of KSE Outdoor Group’s outdoor networks division, Jim Liberatore adds oversight of Sportsman Channel to his leadership, which already includes Outdoor Channel and WFN. As President and CEO of KSE Outdoor Group’soutdoor publishing and digital media division, Jeff Paro will continue in the leadership role he had when these assets were part of Intermedia Outdoors.

SEC Network hired five former U.S. Olympians as part of a 10-person commentating pool for ESPN and SEC Network’s coverage of SEC Gymnastics. Kathy Johnson-Clark (1984), Bart Conner (1984), Courtney Kupets (2014), John Roethlisberger (1992,1996,2000) and Alicia Sacramone-Quinn (2008) will be a part of three different commentating teams covering 21 meets scheduled across SEC Network, ESPNU or ESPN2.

Film/TV distributor and multi-channel network The Orchard is teaming with digital video distributor Fanclub Media in a move designed to shake up the “Action Sports feature Film and TV digital distribution business.” The merger will combine the two companies’ catalogues to become the largest distributor of Action Sports films with 1,000+ productions under one umbrella. Fanclub Media CEO, Jim Martin, and VP, Marc Cuevas, will join The Orchard team in Los Angeles and New York, running point on acquisitions and marketing, and client management respectively.

Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel returns with an all-new season on Jan. 20 at 10p on HBO. Features will include looks at Cris Collinsworth and Urban Meyer, a segment on the 1985 Chicago Bears and a visit with Stephon Marbury.

Yahoo Sports Radio will broadcast seventeen hours of programming daily from the Yahoo Sports red carpet set in Phoenix leading up to Super Bowl XLIX. The Steve Czaban Show, Travis Rodgers Now, Prime Cut with Sean Salisbury and John Granato, Sports X Radio with Ken Thomson and a special weekday series of Talk of Fame will run Wednesday, January 28 through Friday, January 30.

Ahead of FOX Sports 1’s coverage of UFC Fight Night on Sunday, the FOX family of networks are teaming up to support the event in an unprecedented move for the company. Promotional support will see fighter Conor McGregor on FX, hosting a movie marathon that will include Gangs of New York, The Fighter and Taken 2. In addition, FOX Sports 1 will showcase “Conorisms,” featuring McGregor on video airing on the channel and its digital properties and social media outlets. McGregor also voiced in-game promos slated to air during FOX’s coverage of the NFC Championship Game.

Joe Gibbs Racing is continuing its partnership with Sport Clips, announcing that the company will be a four-race primary sponsor for Denny Hamlin and Carl Edwards (two races each) this season. Hamlin will run the Sport Clips colors at Auto Club Speedway and the Southern 500 weekend at Darlington while Edwards will bear the brand at the July New Hampshire and November Texas race.

Speaking of racing, Daytona International Speedway announced that Schneider Electric, a global specialist in energy management, has become the latest partner in the “We Built Daytona” marketing platform for the $400 million DAYTONA Rising redevelopment project. Schneider Electric will provide a single view into all critical infrastructure systems through its EcoStruxure solution and coordinate with its other partners to provide an integrated solution including power distribution, electrical metering, building management controls and further integration of elevators, escalators, lighting, fire systems and generators.

Award winning chefs Charlie Palmer and Michael Mina will host their Inaugural Super Bowl Culinary Kickoff on Thursday, January 29 at Michael Mina’s Bourbon Steak. Grammy Award-winning artist Michelle Branch will perform throughout the evening and begin with a one-hour cocktail reception that includes guests such as Marshall Faulk, Ronnie Lott, Dwight Clark, Rich Aurilia, Shawn Estes, Dick Vermeil, Charles Woodson, Eric Sogard, Andre Wadsworth, Rich Eisen and others. 

DIGITAL & TECHNOLOGY

Draft Ops has entered into a new marketing partnership with Bellator MMA ahead of the promotion’s Friday event. The alliance comprises a promotional marketing agreement that incorporates branded content in the Bellator cage, social media promotions, digital campaigns and live in-show broadcast integration. The deal also makes DraftOps the Official Fantasy Gaming Partner of Bellator. “Fantasy sports is a rapidly expanding market and we are very excited to be a part of it,” said Bellator COO Jason Jordan. “Fantasy games have the ability to boost fan interest and engagement, and we couldn’t have picked a better partner in this space than Draft Ops.”

In a move to strengthen rules enforcement, NASCAR will use 45 remote HD cameras to record every pit stop and automatically check for rules violations such as the pit crew entering the pit stall too early, equipment leaving the pit stall and drivers pitting outside their stalls, according to FOX Sports. The cameras will feed into the TV compound at each track, where NASCAR officials will sit at workstations will double-check the penalties.
