01/11/18: FOX Sports is bringing on BTN President Mark Silverman to oversee its networks

Good morning. It’s Thursday January 11, 2018 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

FOX Sports is going Big for its new networks topper, naming BTN President Mark Silverman as President, National Networks. Silverman will assume his new role effective January 16 and will oversee all programming, production, marketing, and digital for FOX, FS1 and FS2 live events and studio shows in addition to retaining his current responsibilities at BTN.
“Mark is an excellent, creative executive who has been in the FOX Sports family for over 11 years with great success,” said FOX Sports President and Executive Producer Eric Shanks. “We couldn’t be more thrilled he has chosen to take this new role on our team.”
“Mark’s been a creative and trusted leader at BTN for more than a decade,” said Jim Delany, Commissioner, Big Ten Conference. “I have no doubt that FOX Sports’ national networks will all benefit as a result of Mark’s special combination of executive skills. We look forward to continue to work with him in this new role.”

NBC Olympics continues to shore up its talent roster for the XXIII Olympic Winter Games, locking its faces for hockey coverage at the event. Kenny Albert and Gord Miller will combine to provide play-by-play commentary of the men’s hockey tournament, along with analyst Mike Milbury. Pierre McGuire and Brian Boucher will serve as ‘Inside-the-Glass’ analysts. Meanwhile, John Walton will serve as the lead play-by-play voice for NBC Olympics’ coverage of the women’s hockey tournament, alongside analyst AJ Mleczko and reporter Leila Rahimi. Kathryn Tappen will host studio coverage alongside analysts Jeremy Roenick and Keith Jones. Meanwhile, Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick will handle the three NHL on NBC games during the Games, alongside Eddie Olczyk, who continues his treatment for colon cancer.
Meanwhile, NBC Olympics is also tapping into its RSN talent pool for coverage next month. Faces from the NBC Sports Regional Networks who will join NBC Olympics coverage are set to include NBC Sports Boston’s Trenni Kusnierek, who will serve as a curling reporter alongside Boston colleague Abby Chin, who will report on cross-country skiing and ski jumping. Meanwhile, NBC Sports Chicago’s Leila Rahimi will serve as a women’s hockey reporter, and NBC Sports Washington’s Julie Donaldson will reprise her role as Olympic News Desk host. NBC Sports Bay Area’s Jim Kozimor will serve as a curling play-by-play commentator, and, as previously announced, Ahmed Fareed will host NBCSN’s daytime NBC Olympics coverage.
CBS Sports is getting deeper with Tough Mudder, locking in plans to expand the Tough Mudder X partnership to broadcast the competition on CBS for three consecutive weekends this July. Tough Mudder has expanded to include two Tough Mudder X Opens that include March 25 in Sacramento, April 8 in Miami and June 8 in Richmond with the three-part Tough Mudder X show debuting on July 14 at 1p on the broadcast channel. 
NBC will show players who kneel during the national anthem to protest racial inequality during the Super Bowl. Speaking from Pasadena’s TCA event, executive producer Fred Gaudelli notes that “When you are covering a live event, you are covering what’s happening,” he said. “If there are players who choose to kneel, they will be shown live.”

WWE Raw is gearing up to celebrate its 25th anniversary (having first aired on Jan. 11, 1993) with a special show on Jan. 22 that will feature a roster of past and current superstars on USA Network. According to multiple reports, the lineup of confirmed appearances are set to include:“Stone Cold” Steve Austin, “The Heartbreak Kid” Shawn Michaels, The New Age Outlaws, X-Pac, “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase, Sgt. Slaughter, the Undetaker, Jim Ross, Ric Flair, Kevin nash, Scott Hall, Jerry Lawler and more.
NASCAR tapped the talent of Rascal Flatts to perform the prerace show at the 60th annual DAYTONA 500 on Feb. 18. “Rascal Flatts has been around for nearly two decades, establishing itself as one of America’s most popular musical acts – in any genre,” said Daytona International Speedway President Chip Wile. “We are proud to have this outstanding trio on hand for our milestone 60th annual DAYTONA 500. We will have a great concert to precede the “Great American Race,” producing an extraordinary entertainment doubleheader for our fans.”
ESPN’s College GameDay Covered by State Farm will hit Lexington on Jan. 20 for the first show of 2018 in advance of the Saturday Primetime presented by AT&T as Kentucky takes on Florida.  College GameDay Covered by State Farm is hosted by Rece Davis, who is joined by analysts Jay Bilas, Seth Greenberg and Jay Williams.

NASCAR is giving Monster Energy an extension to decide if it wants to remain the Cup series sponsor. The news was broken when NASCAR President Brent Dewar revealed the news in an appearance on Motor Racing Network’s “NASCAR Live” series. The two sides are in the midst of a two-year deal with a two-year option and Monster’s deadline to determine the future of the partnership was Dec. 31.

PepsiCo is tapped the talents of former NFL stars Greg Jennings, Nick Mangold, and Rashad Jennings for PepsiCo’s Game Day Grub Match. The promotion was launched by Vox Creative and features the trio challenged to prepare game day dishes using PepsiCo food and beverage products as ingredients. All three episodes are now on YouTube. In addition, one fan will be able to serve as the PepsiCo Super Bowl LII Social Correspondent by entering a 60-second video at GameDayGrubMatch.com.

Hulu is getting personal for the Olympics, announcing plans in partnership with NBCU, to let its live TV subscribers personalize their experience of the Winter Games. Users can pick the competitions they’re most interested in watching and Hulu will deliver daily clips and highlights of those events.
Yahoo Sports will start streaming NFL playoff games this weekend as part of the company’s new streaming deal with Verizon. The first game available to stream – regardless of mobile network – on mobile via the Yahoo Sports app will be the Falcons/Eagles on Saturday

David Clanachan was named the first Chairman and Commissioner of the Canadian Premier League, Canada’s professional men’s soccer league slated to debut in spring 2019. Clanachan will oversee all aspects of the CPL. Clanachan’s first order of business will be to announce CPL clubs in key Canadian communities from coast to coast.
Mark Pesavento joined the NFL as Vice President, Digital Content where he will be responsible for overseeing digital content across the NFL’s owned and operated digital properties, social media platforms, and distribution partners.
