Opt-In Email: Opt-in email is a term used when a user is given the option to receive email – usually a newsletter, advertising, or promotion. (If you’re reading this, congrats, you’re on an opt-in email list.) Any mass emails sent without first obtaining permission are unsolicited bulk emails, better known as spam.


No more linear TV for Coco? At Variety’s Entertainment Summit during CES, Turner President David Levy said that Conan O’Brien’s TBS talk show might evolve into a mostly digital show. “The definition of a television network in 10 years, what’s that going to mean? Premium video content is what’s really important to Turner,” he said. Levy’s interview came a day after Turner’s Kevin Reilly confirmed that TBS is thinking about converting O’Brien’s show into to a weekly format. Reilly said that the change, if it comes, would simply be because O’Brien is working on a number of other projects for TBS, and “has a very full plate.” Both Levy and Reilly clarified that no decisions have been made yet.
Business Insider’s Jeff Dunn got a chance to take preliminary look at Hulu’s upcoming live TV service, expected to debut later in Q1. Some details: The service – simply called Hulu – allows viewers to pick out clusters of shows, genres and networks, giving the service a chance to get a sense of their taste. On the home screen, viewers will then be fed a selection of shows and movies that the service thinks will be of interest. According to Hulu Product SVP Richard Irving, recommendations will differ depending on what device is being used and time of day. The company says the default will be two concurrent streams. That’s the same as Netflix’s base plan, but not necessarily enough to serve a multi-person household looking to replace a pay-TV subscription. Still, Hulu says it will be offering the option of paid ad-ons. The service will offer both live and on-demand shows side-by side. You can check out Dunn’s write-up here.


The IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau) announced that it’s Tech Lab will take over governance of the Mobile Verification Open-Source Software Development Kit, a program designed to let app publishers measure their mobile ad inventory without integrating software development kits (SDKs) from multiple partners. The initiative, introduced in late 2016, was previously overseen by ad tech company Integral Ad Science. The IAB Tech Lab will work on the initiative along side partners such as Integral Ad Science, Google, Moat, the Media Rating Council, and a number of others.

Hulu has acquired streaming rights to all 180 episodes of The Golden Girls. The sitcom will become available February 13. "This marks the first time one of the most popular series of all time will be available to stream all at once in one place," said Hulu Head of Content Craig Erwich at the Television Critics Association winter press tour.


29%? That’s a surprisingly big number. According to a study conducted by the online survey platform (and later sited by eMarketer), that’s how many U.S. millennials say they watch skippable YouTube ads to completion. 59% percent say they skip them as soon as they can. EMarketer reports that of the millennials surveyed (Americans aged 18-34), 54% visit YouTube at least once daily.
Video ad tech company Unruly released its list of 2016’s most-shared video brands. Red Bull topped Unruly’s list, generating over 14.5 million more shares than runner-up Samsung. (Unruly formulates its rankings by analyzing the number of shares that ads on Facebook and YouTube attract across Facebook and the blogosphere.) Unruly will honor its top 10 most-shared brands at #TheUnrulies, a January 10 virtual awards show. Full list below:

Embeds, a new political half-our comedy series about young reporters covering a fictional presidential campaign, is making its debut January 18 on Verizon’s Go90 mobile video service.
