Discovery Channel is branching out. Net president Rich Ross told reporters at TCA’s winter press tour that male-skewing Discovery is “more narrowly niche than I think it ever needs to be… being more inclusive to women and younger men is a way for us to build back audience.” Mermaids and Megalodons may be out (“it’s something that has run its course”) but as for scripted, “I think we have a huge opportunity,” said Ross.
Fox is hungry for more Bob’s Burgers. The Emmy winner from 20th Century Fox Television, averaging 1.7 among A18-49 and 3.5 million viewers for season five, has been renewed for a 22-ep season six.
More from Fox: this season, the net is for the first time making full episodes of American Idol available on Americanidol.com, FOX Now and Hulu Plus, as well as VOD providers, the day after air. The reality competition opened to a 3.2 rating among A18-49 on Wednesday, down from 4.7 a year ago.
Good news, bad news: Debmar-Mercury and FremantleMedia North America announced the renewal of Celebrity Name Game for a second season, after the show was picked up by Tribune Broadcasting, Sinclair and Cox, among others. Name Game “came out of the gate with an impressive start, building its audience each week, and showing itself to be a strong contender in syndication,” said Thom Beers, CEO of FremantleMedia North America. On the other hand, Tribune scuttled plans for a half-hour talk/variety show starring Ferguson, after not enough clearances could be secured to move forward.
Here’s one way to drum up interest for a new series: Leading up to the premiere of Bravo’s social experiment docu-series Friends to Lovers, the net commissioned a survey from Research Now asking if the risk of dating a best friend is worth the reward of finding love. And? 76 percent of men are open to a romantic relationship with a friend, versus 58 percent of women, while 19 percent of both sexes said they’d rather date their first cousin than their best friend. As for straight men with a best friend who’s a man: 27 percent said they wished they were gay so they could date him. Friends to Lovers premieres Monday, January 12 at 10p.
They’re not smiling in Happyland. MTV has decided not to bring the dramedy back for another round, after season one averaged .2 among A18-49 and 370,000 total viewers at 11p.

Adventure junkies grab their GoPros and hit the road – 100 miles a day, way off the beaten path – in Animal Planet’s Matt on the Run. “No cameraman can keep up with us, which is why we must shoot everything ourselves,” said Matt Galland, who along with two pals braves wild animals, brutal terrain and extreme weather. With NATPE less than two weeks away, Cynopsis is talking with some of the major players attending the conference to see what they plan to accomplish during the 3-day Miami Beach event. First up? Joe DiSalvo, President of Sales, CBS Television Distribution.
What are CTD’s goals for the convention?
Our focus is renewals. Sometimes the sexy thing is the new show, but we have shows (Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy!, Entertainment Tonight, Inside Edition, The Insider), that stations want to know they’re going to have for a long time. We plan to extend shows for the next two years which is important, because of the presidential elections in 2016.
Are there specific plans for ET?
We want to make it part of the stations’ franchise and identity by offering them additional segments and pieces for their sites. ET is further along than Inside Edition: we need to make some strides there. But Inside Edition has really great year-over-year ratings; it’s the second highest-rated news magazine, behind ET.
Any new shows coming down the pike in 2016?
We always have something in development. We tried with Man in the Middle [the talker with Jerry O’Connell and wife Rebecca Romijn]. But that doesn’t mean we won’t still be coming up with new ideas.
FremantleMedia International acquired the international distribution rights (excluding North America) to MTV scripted thriller, Eye Candy, set to premiere on MTV in the U.S. on Monday, January 12 at 10p.
Up has acquired all 166 episodes of Growing Pains in a deal with Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution. Keep an eagle eye out for Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Hillary Swank and Cuba Gooding Jr., among others, weekdays from 5-7p.
Alison Sweeney (The Biggest Loser) will star in Hallmark Movies & Mysteries’ Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder (wt), slated for a spring 2015 premiere. Sweeney, who starred in Hallmark’s 2013 movie Second Chances and is set to star in and exec produce Radio Hype for the net, recently wrapped a long-running role on Days of Our Lives and hosts NBC’s The Biggest Loser.
Ted Danson (CSI), Jean Smart (Samantha Who?) and Patrick Wilson (Angels in America) will star in the second season of FX’s Fargo. They join leads Kirsten Dunst (Meloncholia) and Jesse Plemons (Friday Night Lights).
