IN THE NEWS

A+E Networks is launching an agency to offer advertising partners custom solutions driven by creative and an agnostic distribution model. Lance Still will head up the new unit, called The Bridge, as managing director, in addition to her current role of SVP, branded content for A+E Networks. The new venture will use A+E Nets’ in-house resources for storytelling, analytics and distribution, and will also work through strategic partnerships with content creators such as Hearst Digital Media, Vice Media and Propagate to provide tailored campaigns. A+E has made several strategic investments to support the launch of The Bridge including their proprietary data tool, A+E Precision; and 45th and Dean, the branded content studio that launched in May.

Here’s a lesson in etiquette. CNN apologized yesterday for a same-day segment on its show New Day during which a commentator called Wikileaks founder Julian Assange a “pedophile who lives in the Ecuadorian embassy in London.” The recant followed a Wikileaks tweet in which the company threatened to sue CNN for defamation over the segment.

All is peaceful in Nashville after Connie Britton put to rest any doubt over whether she may be in for the long-term on the series now housed at CMT. During her appearance yesterday on The Ellen Show, Britton told host Ellen DeGeneres she was onboard for the fifth season, noting, “I’m in. I’m in for the duration.”

Animated comedy series Archer will officially make its move from FX to FXX beginning with season 8 this spring. Archer, which just snagged the Emmy for outstanding animated program, has already been renewed for two additional seasons.

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon welcomes back Michelle Obama on January 11 for her final talk show appearance as sitting First Lady of the United States. The visit will mark her third appearance as a guest.

From geography to gender, all is not equal in the media world, according to the new Cynopsis Salary Survey. The Northeast offers top pay for Buyers/Planners ($94,800), Sales/Distribution ($138,700) and Research ($113,000), but the West is where it’s at to make top dollar in Programming ($126,900), Marketing/PR ($113,500) and Production ($126,200). And overall, there’s a $31,700 gap in annual salary between men and women  in some groups like Finance/Legal, the yearly difference can be as much as $50,000. Download the survey here for details on dollars, benefits, job satisfaction and more.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Viceland is tossing its hat into the scripted series arena. The network has ordered six episodes of comedy What Would Diplo Do? (working title), starring, written and exec-produced by James Van Der Beek, and exec-produced by musician/DJ Diplo alongside his longtime manager Kevin Kusatsu and Brandon Dermer. Van Der Beek will also serve as showrunner and Dermer will direct the series, slated to premiere in late 2017.

Endemol Shine North America subsidiaries True Entertainment (Real Housewives of Atlanta) and Original Media (Ink Master) will unite under the new banner Truly Original. The full-service, fully integrated production house for both scripted and unscripted content will be run by True Entertainment co-founders Glenda Hersh and Steven Weinstock, who’ve served as co-presidents and co-CEOs of both companies since April 2015. Truly Original will centralize operations in areas including production and post-production, and business and legal affairs, while maintaining the True Entertainment and Original Media creative labels for brand consistency.

Joe Roth-founded Revolution Studios was purchased by Content Partners and its CP Enterprises affiliate from the equity fund Fortress Investment Group, which has owned it since 2014.
