Gayle King has inked a new deal with CBS News. King will continue as co-host “CBS Mornings,” a job she started in 2012. King’s current deal was set to end in April, and there was speculation she might make a move. “I’m so proud to be a part of this team, I’m so glad negotiations are over,” said King on her SiriusXM show.

Joni Mitchell is removing her music from Spotify, “in solidarity” with fellow music icon Neil Young. Young requested his music be removed because of Covid vaccine misinformation being spread on Joe Rogan’s Spotify podcast, “The Joe Rogan Experience.” “They can have Rogan or Young. Not both,” wrote Young. Spotify chose Rogan, who signed a $100 million deal with the service in 2020.

Meanwhile, Young has urged his fans to move to Amazon Music, with an offer of a four-month free trial. And he tweeted a tip of his cap to Apple Music, too, posting, “I LOVE APPLE.”

The Senate Commerce Committee has set Wednesday, February 2 as the date for a vote on whether to approve the nominations of Gigi Sohn to the Federal Communications Commission and Alvaro Bedoya to the Federal Trade Commission. Currently, the FTC and FCC are deadlocked, with two Republicans and two Democrats.

In 2021, consumers lost $770 million to social media scams, according the the FTC’s Consumer Protection Data Spotlight report. That’s an increase of 18 times since 2017. Most reports of fraud (45%) involved people losing money to online shopping scams. “Most of the reports about online shopping scams involved someone who ordered a product they saw marketed on social media that never arrived,” said the report.

A federal appeals court rejected broadband providers’ challenge to California’s net neutrality law, passed in 2018, forbidding broadband providers from throttling traffic and charging fees for faster service. Industry groups sought an injunction against the law’s enforcement, contending internet access is “inherently interstate.”

Stephanie Ruhle, host of “MSNBC Live with Stephanie Ruhle” at 9a, will replace Brian Williams at the 11p hour. “Since joining MSNBC in 2016, Stephanie has been a staple of our dayside anchor team and a trusted voice on topics at the intersection of politics, finance and international business,” said MSNBC President Rashida Jones. “Morning Joe” will expand from 6a-9a to 10a. The change is expected to take place within the next few months.

“Tiger King” star Joe Exotic, in prison for an attempted murder-for-hire plot, did not get the court ruling he’d hoped for last week. A federal judge did reduce the reality star/zookeeper’s 22-year prison sentence, but only by one year.

Today, January 31 at 10a, YouTube is launching AdBlitz, a digital destination for sports fans to watch Super Bowl ads, with a blog post that includes insights from Big Game advertisers. “Every year, we look for innovative ways to excite and entertain our fans around the Super Bowl,” said Blake Stuchin, Vice President of NFL Digital Media Business Development. “Partnering together for YouTube on AdBlitz will provide fans with all the great advertising from the game, including direct access to the NFL spot, including teasers and behind-the-scenes content.”

Discovery Inc. commissioned 556 first-run TV shows in 2021, more than any other media company, according to Ampere Analysis. ViacomCBS came in second with 406, Netflix placed third with 403, and Disney was fourth with 387.

WarnerMedia Kids & Family is expanding its partnership with children’s book author, illustrator and playwright Mo Willems, with HBO Max’s extension of its licensing rights to “Mo Willems and The Storytime All-Stars Present: Don’t Let the Pigeon Do Storytime!” and “Mo Willems Story Time Shorts!”. Both programs are available to stream on HBO Max. In collaboration with Stampede Ventures as his producing partner, Willems signed on with WarnerMedia Kids & Family for a multi-year deal to create live-action Storytime Specials, and multiple animated and live-action series.

Nickelodeon ordered a second season of “That Girl Lay Lay.” The buddy comedy follows an avatar from a personal affirmation app that magically comes to life, and her best friend.

UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, announced the launch of the Thousand Miles Project, an incubator program created by writer, showrunner and producer Soo Hugh (“Pachinko”), who has an overall development deal with the studio. Designed to cultivate Asian Pacific voices and narratives, the Thousand Miles Project will impart to emerging storytellers the core concepts of the television development process and create accessible pathways for multi-dimensional Asian Pacific stories.

Casting notes: Alex Moffat (“SNL”) has joined Apple TV+’s “Bad Monkey” in a recurring role…Adam Brody (“The O.C.”) will star in FX’s “Fleishman Is in Trouble,” along with Jesse Eisenberg, Lizzy Kaplan and Claire Danes. The limited series is based on the bestseller of the same name…Elizabeth Mitchell (“Lost”) will reprise the role she played in “The Santa Clause” film franchise along with Tim Allen in Disney+’s upcoming limited series…Beverly D’Angelo (“Entourage”) will guest on NBC’s “Law & Order: SVU” as the mother of A.D.A. Dominick “Sonny” Carisi.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Peacock’s “Bust Down” premieres Thursday, March 10. The comedy, produced by Lorne Michaels, focuses on four casino employees living dead-end lives in middle America.

Season two of Netflix’ “Swap Shop” premieres Wednesday, February 16. The reality series from Hit + Run follows a group people who depend on a Tennessee radio show to buy, sell and swap items that come through the airwaves.

The premiere of Turkish series “Juegos del Destino” premieres on Kanal D Drama Friday, February 11, dubbed into Spanish. “The US audience continues to ask for and embrace universal stories where women are the protagonists,” said said Francheska León de la Barra, Marketing Director of Kanal D Drama in the US and LatAm. “We are sure this series will immediately captivate our fans.”

ABC set midseason premiere dates for “A Million Little Things” and “Big Sky.” “A Million Little Things” returns for the second half of season four on Wednesday, February 23, while season two of “Big Sky” picks up Thursday, February 24.

COMING UP

Peacock set the lineup for its daily studio shows covering the Winter Olympics. Onboard are Matt Iseman (“American Ninja Warrio”), Olympic skier Jonny Moseley, figure skater Ashley Wagner, Olympic skating champions Brian Boitano and Scott Hamilton, and sportscaster Adnan Virk. The Olympic Show, Olympic Ice, Winter Gold, and highlights will stream for free on Peacock’s Olympic Spotlight Channel, beginning February 5.

Showtime Documentary Films it has acquired North American rights to the Sundance Film Festival documentary “2nd Chance,” from Ramin Bahrani (“The White Tiger”). The feature-length film explores the life and legacy of Richard Davis, the inventor of the modern-day bulletproof vest who shot himself 192 times to prove his product worked. Showtime is planning a theatrical release ahead of a network premiere later his year.

As part of a series of initiatives to honor Black History Month, Fuse Media is continuing the new season of its Future History franchise by recognizing a class of Future Black History makers who are using their voices to drive positive change. The Future Black History Class of 2022 will be spotlighted through a short-form video series which premieres February 1 on the Fuse digital and social platforms, as well as its Fuse and FM linear channels.

FAST brand Fuse Backstage will premiere three original new music documentaries, featuring Camila Cabello in “Just Jump” (Tuesday, February 1), Dua Lipa in “Elevating” (Tuesday, March 1), and DJ Khaled in “Another Win” (Friday, April 1).
