Apple beat analysts’ estimates with $123.9 billion in sales for 4Q21, and posted record income of $34.6 billion. Wall Street had projected revenue of $118.7 billion. With iPhone 13 on the market, sales of iPhones were $71.61 billion, up 9%.

Be there or be Square: Apple is planning a feature that would enable small businesses to accept payments directly on their iPhones without the use of external payment terminals, reports Bloomberg. Apple purchased Mobeewave, which developed technology for smartphones to accept payments with a credit card, in 2020, as part of a move to create a potential Square competitor.

Snapchat has made upgrades to its AR shopping features aimed at benefitting both consumers and retail partners. The AR shopping features now display key product information, updated in real-time, like current product pricing and product descriptions and unique links to make purchases on new Lens Product Cards that appear as users virtually try on products. For brands, the updates provide more data about how their AR shopping features are performing.

Twitter is developing a feature that would allow users to designate only “trusted friends” to receive some tweets. Developer Alessandro Paluzzi has uncovered evidence that in its current form, the temporarily named Flock would allow users to add up to 150 people to a list of those who can see and respond to tweets sent to the group.

Fuse Media announced a new partnership with ThetaDrop, an environmentally friendly NFT marketplace, to launch a series of NFTs. Fuse’s first NFT drop features Afro-Latina musician, activist, entrepreneur and reality star Amara La Negra and her Fuse series, “Don’t Cancel Me with Amara La Negra,” which has its season finale Wednesday, February 2 on Fuse and Fuse+.

Globant, the brand behind technological solutions focused on reinventing businesses, has partnered with iagency GUT Buenos Aires to launch a campaign called “Seek Reinvention.” The campaign translates the universe of technological solutions developed by the brand into a language that everyone can understand. “In most cases, technology adoption doesn’t tend to happen on purpose. It just happens,” said GUT Buenos Aires Chief Creative Officers & Global Partners Joaquín Cubría and Ignacio Ferioli. “Something always comes along that improves our daily life, one experience at the time, without us even noticing. And since Globant is a brand that constantly seeks reinvention and progress, and is the brand behind many technological innovations many of us know and love, we wanted to introduce them to the world with a campaign to show how hard our lives could be without companies like them.”

ADVERTISING

Twitter introduced three new free products, Site Visits Optimization, Aggregated Measurement, and Events Manager, aimed at improving campaign performance to drive traffic to a company’s website. The products support measurement and optimization solutions launched in 2021.

Today, January 31 at 10a, YouTube is launching AdBlitz, a digital destination for sports fans to watch Super Bowl ads, with a blog post that includes insights from Big Game advertisers. “Every year, we look for innovative ways to excite and entertain our fans around the Super Bowl,” said Blake Stuchin, Vice President of NFL Digital Media Business Development. “Partnering together for YouTube on AdBlitz will provide fans with all the great advertising from the game, including direct access to the NFL spot, including teasers and behind-the-scenes content.”

Google is replacing its FLoC (Federated Learning of Cohorts) proposal with a new solution, Topics API, as the end of third-party cookies draws near. Google will determine a user’s interests based on their past week’s browsing history, helping advertisers decide which ads to show. Topics are kept for three weeks before being automatically deleted, and Chrome users can see and remove their topics, or disable the feature. Google says topics are “thoughtfully curated” by humans and “will not include potentially sensitive categories, such as gender or race.” A developer trial is launching on Chrome by the end of 1Q22.

LG Ads Solutions, the provider of LG smart TV native ads and audience targeting data, introduced a suite of guaranteed outcome-based media offerings, through which advertisers only pay for CTV ads when they meet specified performance goals, which are independently validated using third-party data. The Guaranteed Outcomes program ensures brands that their native and CTV video ads running on LG smart TVs meet campaign goals across a broad range of KPIs, from reach and frequency, demographics, video completion rates in which buyers only pay for ads that are viewed to 100 percent completion, and conversion metrics.

Kantar AI-powered ad testing solution, Link AI, is now available on market research platform Kantar Marketplace. Link AI is able to predict a TV ad’s in-market performance within 15 minutes, making it possible to test ads for a wider range of scenarios, including to test competitors’ ads, get feedback on early versions in the creative development process, optimize live campaigns in real-time, or to build an evidence base of ad performance across a sector or market.

MUSIC NOTES

Joni Mitchell is removing her music from Spotify, “in solidarity” with fellow music icon Neil Young. Young requested his music be removed because of Covid vaccine misinformation being spread on Joe Rogan’s Spotify podcast, “The Joe Rogan Experience.” “They can have Rogan or Young. Not both,” wrote Young. Spotify chose Rogan, who signed a $100 million deal with the service in 2020.

Meanwhile, Young has urged his fans to move to Amazon Music, with an offer of a four-month free trial. And he tweeted a tip of his cap to Apple Music, too, posting, “I LOVE APPLE.” Shares of Spotify fell 6% from January 26-28, after Young’s demand that the company drop his catalog, as the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.1%.

Twitch, Amazon Music and Universal Music Group expanded their agreement to provide customers with enhanced access to music content on Amazon, including live streams, artist merchandise, and exclusive experiences with UMG artists. “UMG has been a strategic collaborator for us, as we continue to evolve our service and bring our customers even more ways to engage with their favorite artists, and discover new music,” said Amazon VP of Music Steve Boom.

Metrological, a Comcast Company, announced that global music streaming service Deezer is now available in the Metrological App Library for Metrological’s global MVPD and TV operator customer base. With a Deezer premium subscription, the Deezer music streaming app provides listeners with access to an audio catalogue of more than 73 million songs, podcasts and radio stations. Deezer also offers listeners their own musical Flow, which is an uninterrupted stream of music created by Deezer’s algorithm based on a person’s taste.

Disney+ will launch in 42 countries and 11 territories this summer. Among the countries that will have access to the streamer are South Africa, Turkey, Poland, the United Arab Emirates, Israel, Egypt, and Poland.

Fox News International is expanding its distribution on Roku. Starting today, January 31, the direct-to-consumer platform will see increased reach across Chile, Costa Rica, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, Panama and the UK.

Cinedigm is partnering with Nreal to bring three of Cinedigm’s channels to Nreal’s newly introduced AR “TV” app. The deal offers viewers of streaming services Bloody Disgusting TV, Realmadrid TV and CONtv an immersive viewing experience, via a virtual HD screen of up to 220 inches provided by the Nreal Light AR glasses. The partnership makes Cinedigm the first streaming integrated into consumer AR.

VOD Haystack reports it now offers news from more than 400 providers on its Haystack News streaming AVOD platform and will surpass more than 50 live news channels this January. “The core of Haystack News remains the custom newscast we build for each and every viewer, but we are pleased to expand our live channel line-up because we know viewers like to watch news in different ways,” said Daniel Barreto, Co-Founder and CEO at Haystack TV. “Hearst has been a tremendous early supporter of Haystack via our longstanding on-demand news content distribution agreement, and we are thrilled to extend our relationship to now include FAST live channel content from its stations across the U.S.”

Digital channel studio and syndicator BEC: Best Ever Channels and The Stand Group announced plans to launch a new comedy brand and channel to streaming platforms in early 2022. WITZ will include curated library programming, new stand-up comedy specials, talk shows, vodcasts and other new franchise blocks.

Witz, a new FAST livestreaming comedy channel, is on its way to the streaming circuit from studio and syndicator BEC: Best Ever Channels and The Stand Group. Witz will include curated library programming, new stand-up comedy specials, talk shows, vodcasts and franchise blocks including “Cancelled Comedy” and “What’s Your F@#king Deal?!,” with some content emanating live from The Stand Comedy Club in NY.

The WWE Network has made another exclusive move in the streaming realm. The net will stream on Disney+ Hotstar in Indonesia, a move that follows the direct-to-consumer service’s exclusive $1 billion pact with NBCU’s Peacock in the US.

Cinedigm’s soccer-centric service Realmadrid TV launched on ViacomCBS’ Pluto TV. The channel will join Pluto TV’s sports category, which includes channels such as NFL Channel, MLB and PGA Tour.

DEALS

DNEG, a visual effects and animation company, has entered into a business combination agreement with Sports Ventures Acquisition Corp. The transaction implies a combined company enterprise value of approximately $1.7 billion. DNEG expects to receive approximately $400 million in gross transaction proceeds, including a fully committed $168 million common stock PIPE at a purchase price of $10 per share.

Pantone has partnered with Samsung to become the world’s first Pantone Validated HDR Displays for PMS and SkinTone colors for the newest QLED TV and Monitors. Samsung’s 2022 QLED models will be the world’s first Displays in the industry to incorporate Pantone Validated and Pantone SkinTone Validated with HDR technology.

Pixellot, provider of AI-automated sports video and analytics solutions, has partnered with youth travel tournament operator The National Basketball to provide software and hardware solutions for the capture, production and streaming of basketball games and tournaments across the US. Under the new collaboration, the NTBA will introduce Pixellot’s youth video and analysis platform Pixellot You to its member teams. Pixellot You integrates with Pixellot’s mobile camera the Pixellot Air with an off-the-shelf action camera for video capture, review, and analysis.

Bitcentral Inc., provider of media workflows for broadcast and digital video, has acquired Powr.tv, provider of a direct-to-consumer video publishing solution. Bitcentral’s Streaming Media Group will integrate its FUEL platform with Powr.tv to provide a unified workflow aimed at simplifying video management, streaming, and distribution. The combined solution features turn-key OTT application deployment, dynamic playlisting for VOD, live and linear content, and support for advertising, subscription, and transactional business models. Additional features include AI-based content and metadata ingestion, comprehensive distribution and syndication capabilities and dynamic rules-based automation.
