The IRL Upfront tally is growing, as the CW announced plans to resume its annual in-person event in May. The network’s bid to woo media buyers will take place the morning of Thursday, May 19, back at its usual haunt, the New York City Center Theater in midtown. The move comes after NBCUniversal, Fox and ViacomCBS made public their plans to return to in-person Upfront presentations earlier the same week in May. Still no official word from Disney, although reportedly the company is planning to return to Lincoln Center for its event that would combine ABC, ESPN, FX and its other streaming and network platforms in a single presentation.
Golden Hour: NBC unveiled some of the talent lined up for its upcoming Betty White tribute. President Joe Biden, Drew Barrymore, Valerie Bertinelli, Cher, Bryan Cranston, Ted Danson, Ellen DeGeneres, Jimmy Fallon, Tina Fey, Ana Gasteyer, Goldie Hawn, Vicki Lawrence, Jane Leeves, Jay Leno, Anthony Mackie, Wendie Malick, Joel McHale, Tracy Morgan, Jean Smart and Mary Steenburgen are among those who’ll pay tribute to the late actress and animal advocate in “Celebrating Betty White: America’s Golden Girl” on Monday, January 31 at 10p.
NBCU streamer Peacock enters its third year in operation reporting that adjusted losses more than doubled during Q4 2021 from the prior year. During parent Comcast’s earnings call yesterday, CFO Mike Cavanagh said Comcast expects Peacock losses to total about $2.5 billion as its investment in content continues to ramp up.
“The Wendy Williams Show” lined up guest hosts for February as Williams continues to sit the show out due to health issues. Michael Rapaport returns January 31-February 4, Fat Joe and Remy Ma are back February 7-11, Bevy Smith and Terrence J are onboard February 14-18, and Sherri Shepherd steps in February 21-25. Rapaport will be back as host February 28-March 4.

Retta is spreading her wingsat NBCUniversal. The former star of NBC and Universal TV’s “Good Girls” and “Parks and Recreation” inked a new talent holding deal through which she’ll collaborate exclusively with NBCU Television and Streaming Entertainment, and Universal Television on projects in which she can star across the company’s broad platform roster.
TNT is diving deeper into true crime with upcoming anthology series “Rich & Shameless,” slated to debut this summer. The series, from the network and Raw (“Three Identical Strangers,” “Don’t F**k with Cats”), will document the problems that befall great wealth through seven films. An early episode, “Pam & Tommy: The Tape That Changed America,” is set to air Saturday, February 19. Other subjects include the mysterious death of crypto millionaire and suspected con artist Gerald Cotton, Seagrams heiress Clare Bronfman and her involvement in a nefarious sex cult, and the battle between Martin Shkreli and The Wu-Tang Clan.
Peacock handed a straight-to-series order to Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson’s TV adaptation of Ryan Parrott’s comic book “Dead Day.” The duo, who developed CW staple “The Vampire Diaries,” will serve as co-showrunners and writers on the series, which is based at Universal Television and Aftershock Media. “Dead Day” centers on an ensemble of animated characters as they navigate the one night annually the dead come back to complete unfinished business of all sorts on earth.
Andrew Orenstein (“Ghostwriter”) and Matt Hastings (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) have boarded upcoming series “Glimmerville” as showrunners. The show, which has yet to find a network or streamer home, is an adaptation of the book Field Guide to the Supernatural Universe, due out this spring from author Alyson Noel. Described as a mashup of “Stranger Things,” “Harry Potter,” “Percy Jackson” and “Gravity Falls,” the project is set in small town and follows a boy who longs to be normal but must rely on his suppressed supernatural abilities to defeat an otherworldly nemesis.
Snap re-upped deals with Disney, NBCU and ViacomCBS covering a range of shows on the platform. The companies will continue to provide their current content on Snapchat’s Discover feature as well as bring new content.
Although mum’s the word at HBO Max, another “Suicide Squad” spinoff series is in the works at the streamer. James Gunn, who’s behind HBO Max’s spinoff “Peacemaker,” spilled the news on Deadline’s Hero Nation podcast. “We’re working on something else now, another TV show that’s connected to that universe,” Gunn said. “I can’t quite say.”
In another brand integration bid, Crackle Plus inked a multiyear co-production partnership with APX Content Ventures and Publicis Media. First up is “Inside The Black Box,” a 10-ep series hosted by Emmy and NAACP Image Award winner Joe Morton (“Scandal”) and celebrity acting coach Tracey Moore, who will interview and engage in performances with celebrity guests. The series is sponsored by The General, which will have brand placement across various aspects of the programming.
Corus Entertainment network Global greenlit “Robyn Hood,” an edgy, modern take on the Robin Hood legend in which Robyn, a fearless young woman, embraces Gen Z distaste for the injustices of today and fights them the best way she knows how. The series hails from Boat Rocker and music and TV director and filmmaker Director X, and is penned by Chris Roberts (“Orphan Black”).
ScoreG Productions and Super Channel are teaming on three-part true crime episodic docuseries “Thunder: The Life and Death of Arturo Gatti.” The project will chronicle the life of the legendary boxer, who was found dead at the age of 37 in his hotel room while he was vacationing with his wife and son in Brazil.

“Love Off the Grid,” featuring couples who attempt to make it work in the wild because one partner lives off the grid with no running water, electricity or civilization in sight, premieres on discovery+ this Sunday, January 30.
“United We Drive,” which explores friendships between people from different walks of life forged over a shared love of classic cars, debuts Thursday, February 3 at 10p on FYI. NASCAR Cup Series driver Daniel Suerez hosts the limited series, which will see complementary 60-second shortform pieces airing across the Drive block on FYI and The History Channel, and bespoke pieces featured on FYI’s YouTube and Facebook pages.
Stephen Colbert’s animated series “Fairview” will bow Wednesday, February 9 at 8:30p on Comedy Central. The series, the first new original under the network’s drive into adult animation, is unsurprisingly sociopolitically topical as national politics cause mayhem in a small town run by a party girl turned pragmatic mayor.
Season 2 of “Space Force” returns Friday, February 18. The comedic action picks up with General Naird and his underdog team having to prove their worth to a new administration while dealing with interpersonal challenges. Laughs are provided by Steve Carell, Jimmy O. Yang, John Malkovich and more.
Also on Netflix, both the personal and professional tracks of Bubba Wallace, the only full-time Black NASCAR driver during the turbulent 2021 season, are under the lens in “RACE: Bubba Wallace,” speeding to screens Tuesday, February 22. The docuseries is directed by Erik Parker (“L.A. Burning: The Riots 25 Years Later,” “Nas: Time Is Illmatic”)
Showtime released the official trailer for “Super Pumped: The Battle For Uber,” the first installment of its new anthology series that’s set to premiere Sunday, February 27 at 10p. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”), Kyle Chandler (“Bloodline”) and Uma Thurman (“Pulp Fiction”), first season is based on the Mike Isaac book of the same name.
Say cheese. Culinary chaos will be unleashed Thursday, March 31 at 9p when TBS bows “Rat in the Kitchen.” A new twist on the traditional cooking competition series, “Rat,” hosted by comedian Natasha Leggero and celebrity chef Ludo Lefebvre, is a cat-and-mouse game where contestants try to determine the identity the undercover mole (rat) who’s out to undermine their chances at victory.

“Freedom on the Range,” an INSP docudrama produced by Al Roker Entertainment, is set to premiere on the network Saturday, February 26 at 8p. The special explores the contributions of African American Cowboys to the American West.

Among new programming are a new “Looney Tunes Cartoons Valentine’s Day Special,” premiering Thursday, February 3, the same day new episodes of “Sesame Street” begin rolling out. Season 2 of “Yabba Dabba Dinosaurs” and the fourth chapter of “Craig of the Creek,” both headed to screens Thursday, February 17.

Witz, a new FAST livestreaming comedy channel, is on its way to the streaming circuit from studio and syndicator BEC: Best Ever Channels and The Stand Group. Witz will include curated library programming, new stand-up comedy specials, talk shows, yodcasts and franchise blocks including “Cancelled Comedy” and “What’s Your F@#king Deal?!,” with some content emanating live from The Stand Comedy Club in NY.
Fox News International is expanding its distribution on Roku. Starting January 31, the direct-to-consumer platform will see increased reach across Chile, Costa Rica, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, Panama and the UK.
The WWE Network has made another exclusive move in the streaming realm. The net will stream on Disney+ Hotstar in Indonesia, a move that follows the direct-to-consumer service’s exclusive $1 billion pact with NBCU’s Peacock in the US.
Cinedigm’s soccer-centric service Realmadrid TV launched on ViacomCBS’ Pluto TV. The channel will join Pluto TV’s sports category, which includes channels such as NFL Channel, MLB and PGA Tour.
