IN THE NEWS
Star Jones, one of the original co-hosts on ABC daytimer “The View,” will preside over “Divorce Court” next season. “Star Jones will bring her life experiences, her knowledge as a litigator, and her forceful personality to that storied bench,” said Stephen Brown, EVP of Programming and Development for Fox First Run and Fox Television Stations. “She aspires to make the show more meaningful, more interactive and more impactful for the couples.”
WarnerMedia has renewed its distribution agreement with Altice USA. CNN+ was not included in the deal, and HBO Max is carried under a separate agreement, but cable nets including TBS, TNT, truTV and Cartoon Network are covered.
INSP has introduced a new logo, reimagined to reflect the evolution of the brand – complete with cowboy hat. “It was high time,” said COO Dale Ardizzone. “INSP’s former logo was introduced during a major rebrand eleven years ago. Over the last decade, the network has experienced explosive ratings growth and attracted loyal viewership, particularly from viewers who deeply embrace Western content. We needed a logo that made a statement.” Said Hays Tauber, EVP of Marketing, “We’ve got some dirt under our fingernails, and our weathered hat reflects that. The hat is positioned on the text with swagger, quietly communicating that we are a network to be reckoned with!”
One day after announcing the renewal of “Grey’s Anatomy” for season 19, ABC picked up “Grey’s” spinoff “Station 19” for a sixth run. The first responder drama averages a 2.17 rating among A18-49 after 35 days of viewing. Krista Vernoff will return as executive producer/showrunner for both series.
Fox Sports and Twitter have expanded their partnership for the upcoming men’s and women’s World Cup tournaments. In addition to delivering highlights in near real time to Fox’s handles on Twitter, the deal includes original content like live analysis via Twitter Spaces, Q&As with Fox Soccer personalities. Fox has broadcast rights to the FIFA World Cup through 2026.
Now through the end of February, Prime Video is toasting season four of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” with an immersive experience in NYC’s Bryant Park. Visitors can take refuge in the “Maisel”-themed Cozy Igloos, sip signature cocktails, and take part in photo ops and content from the series playing throughout the park.
What will the connection of Smart TVs and mobile devices mean for marketers in the future? “Developers who win in Smart TVs know that ‘lean-back’ experiences are what consumers want from their TVs,” says Matt Tubergen, Digital Turbine’s EVP of Global Strategy and Corporate Development. “Categories like video, news, sports, and weather all do well. Categories like gaming, social, search do not do well or haven’t cracked the code yet.” For more insights from Tubergen, go to Cynsiders.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Candle Media has acquired Faraway Road Productions (“Hit & Run”), founded by Lior Raz and Avi Issacharoff. “Lior and Avi are world-class storytellers who produce exhilarating content that strikes a chord globally with audiences across cultures and languages. They are exactly the type of partners we and Blackstone are looking to invest behind – and we are excited to work with them to further accelerate Faraway Road’s growth trajectory,” said Candle Media co-chairs and former Walt Disney colleagues Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs.
Sharon Stone (“Ratched”) has joined the season two cast of HBO Max’s “The Flight Attendant,” as the estranged mother of Kaley Cuoco’s character.
With the TV revival machine in overdrive, Hulu has ordered comedy “Reboot,” from creator and executive producer Steve Levitan (“Modern Family”) and 20th Television, to series. In the satire, Hulu reboots an early 2000’s family sitcom, forcing back together a dysfunctional cast that must deal with their unresolved issues. Judy Greer (“Kidding”) will star opposite previously announced Keegan-Michael Key and Johnny Knoxville, replacing Leslie Bibb. “Steve Levitan is a comedy genius and his idea for ‘Reboot’ is as hilarious as it is timely. We’re thrilled that our friends at Hulu love this sly, wildly funny look at the television comedy business as much as we do,” said Karey Burke, President of 20th Television. Levitan also had a comment: “After working thirty years in TV comedy, this is both my love letter to sitcoms and, if I’m being honest, much-needed therapy.”
COMING UP
On what would have been Betty White’s 100th birthday, Game Show Network will air a four-hour marathon of “$25,000 Pyramid” episodes featuring the golden girl, starting at 9a. White died December 31.
STREAMING
BBC Studios has launched two new FAST channels in the US on Pluto TV. BBC Kids and Ninos por BBC, the first children-dedicated FAST channels for BBC Studios, will bring over 450 hours of English and Spanish language programming to Pluto TV.
CJC Television Network and The Grid Network are now available on Pzaz. Under the new deal, Pzaz will also broadcast, CJC 2, CJC Global and TheGrid Latina.
TECH TALK
An antitrust bill targeting large tech is scheduled for markup on January 13 by the Senate Judiciary Committee. The American Innovation and Choice Online Act prevents an online platform from preventing another business from interoperating with another platform; requiring a business to buy a dominant platform’s wares to get preferred placement; misusing a business’ data to compete against it; and biasing search. Civil penalties of up to 15% of US revenue can be levied for the duration of the violation, and a court can penalize a CEO or corporate officer an amount equal to their compensation for the 12 months preceding or following a complaint.
Datonics has partnered with Simpli.fi to launch a new CTV data offering within the Simpli.fi platform. Datonics is providing Simpli.fi segment data mapped to a continually updated household IP, aimed at offering advertisers enhanced accuracy and scale, as well as breadth and depth of segments available for CTV targeting on the Simpli.fi platform. “Advertisers are flocking to CTV, but it is still a nascent medium that is becoming more sophisticated,” said Michael Benedek, CEO, Datonics. “Through the enhanced application of data, consumers will have an improved viewing experience and advertisers will see better campaign ROI.”
Advertisers this year won’t be as hyper-focused on just the lower- or upper-funnels, according to TVSquared’s “2022 Outlook: What’s Next for Cross-Platform TV’s Evolution” report. Instead, “It’s a full-funnel approach, covering the complete customer journey, that is vital for brand success and growth.”
GOING GLOBAL
Beyond Rights has licensed ITN Productions’ two-hour investigative documentary, “The Costa Concordia: Why She Sank,” to TF1 in France, Discovery in Italy, TV2 in Norway, SVT in Sweden, RTL in the Netherlands, VTM in Belgium, Ceska TV in the Czech Republic and WP1 in Poland, and SBS in Australia.
Blue Ant International, announced today that it has secured several sales across Latin America. The deals include premium programming across the distributor’s Factual and Specialist Factual categories to buyers across Latin American territories including DIRECTV, DIRECTV GO, Sky Brazil, Globosat and AMC Networks International, for shows including “Bathsheba,” “Baby Animals,” “Strange Creatures,” and “Into the Blue.”
