Microsoft is planning to introduce a new Copilot key to Windows 11 PCs. Google is testing a “Tracking Protection” option that enables Chrome users to restrict the data they share when visiting a website. GroupM announced the launch of the GroupM Ad Innovation Accelerator, aimed at redefining engagement between advertisers and audiences. AI agents advertising revenues on Meta and Snap are projected to top $1 billion this year, according to a report by New Street Research. “We estimate Snap will generate $234 million from ‘My AI’ sponsored links in 2024, growing 194% to $686 million the following year, or 11.2% of total 2025 ad revenue,” wrote New Street’s Dan Salmon in the report, “How Much Ad Revenue Could Consumer AI Agents Generate.” The report assumes Meta begins testing ads in its AI agents in July 2024, and estimates the company can generate $6.7 billion in ad revenue from them in 2025, or 4.0% of total 2025 ad revenue.
LEGAL ISSUES
The US National Labor Relations Board found that Google’s refusal to bargain with unionized YouTube Music workers is illegal. After a group of Texas-based contract workers for YouTube Music voted last April to join the Alphabet Workers Union, Google refused to bargain over return to office complaints, claiming it is not legally the employer of contract workers. Not so, said the NLRB, which ordered Google to “cease and desist” refusal to engage with the union, and “bargain on request.” Google plans to appeal.
A lawsuit from families whose children allegedly used the Snapchat app to purchase fentanyl on the platform can move forward, ruled Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Lawrence Riff. The decision could poke a hole in the tech industry’s legal immunity shield, Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, and open the door to more lawsuits. Riff said that Section 230 does not apply, and the lawsuit cannot be thrown out under the law, because the case does not seek to hold Snap accountable for the content made by third-party drug dealers. Since the lawsuit goes after product and business decisions that are “independent … of the drug sellers’ posted content,” Snap can be sued. Snap said it works closely with law enforcement to investigate violations of its anti-drug policies, and deploys technology to detect drug dealers’ activity.

The average monthly churn rate for major SVOD services rose to 6.3% in November, up from 5.1% in November 2022, according to Antenna. The number of “serial churners,” subscribers who have canceled at least three services in the last two years, has risen to a quarter of subscribers, up from 15% two years ago.
Nearly two-thirds of consumers say they would choose an ad-supported option if it saves them $4-5 per month on a video subscription, significantly higher than just six months ago, according to Hub’s “TV Advertising: Fact vs. Fiction.” All things being equal, nearly four in ten viewers would choose a streaming service over another if it had a lighter ad load. Most viewers consider ad breaks reasonable if they are one minute or shorter – ninety seconds is the tipping point where most viewers no longer consider a break reasonable, reports Hub.
