Former HBO chief Richard Plelper and his just-launched Eden Productions inked a five-year exclusive deal with Apple TV+. “Apple is one of the most creative companies in the world, and the perfect home for my new production company and next chapter,” said Plepler. The exec announced in February, ahead of AT&T’s purchase of HBO parent WarnerMedia, that he was leaving after almost 28 years.
Daytime talk show RuPaul is not moving forward in syndication, after last summer’s three-week trial run in Fox markets. The show, which mixed celebrity interviews with aspirational messaging, was distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution. The news comes ahead of the January 10 launch of RuPaul’s Netflix comedy, AJ and the Queen.
Court TV will air coverage of the rape trial of Harvey Weinstein beginning Monday, January 6 at 9a as jury selection gets underway. Court TV anchors will be led by Seema Iyer, who will host coverage from an on-location studio, with analysis from the network’s Atlanta headquarters.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association and Dick Clark Productions have partnered with Facebook for the official red carpet pre-show for the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards livestreams on Sunday, January 5 at 6p. Meanwhile, The Talk’s Sharon Osbourne will join Entertainment Tonight’s Kevin Frazier to guest co-host ET’s red carpet coverage of the Globes.
Nominating ballots for the 92nd annual Academy Awards were sent out to roughly 8,700 active voting members, who have until Tuesday, January 7 to submit their nominees for the best of 2019. Noms will be announced on Monday, January 13, with the Oscars will being held two weeks earlier this year, on Sunday, February 9.
The Irishman, Dolemite Is My Name, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Little Women and Joker were among the film nominees for the 35th Artios Awards, the Casting Society of America announced on Thursday. The Artios Awards honor casting directors’ contribution to film, television and theater. Winners will be revealed on Thursday, January 30 at ceremonies in Los Angeles, NYC and London.

Netflix renewed Raising Dion for an eight-episode second season. The superhero drama was named one of the streamer’s 10 most popular series of 2019. Carol Barbee is set to return as showrunner and Michael B. Jordan, who appeared in the first season, will be back as executive producer alongside Kenny Goodman, Kim Roth, Dennis Liu and Charles D. King’s MACRO. Production is set to begin this year.
All3Media has set up comedy entertainment production company Great Scott Media with Leon Wilson, who ran The X Factor and Got Talent production company Talkback Thames, and Ed Sleeman, reports Deadline. The two former top Fremantle executives left the company in 2019.,

National TV advertising for linear TV networks continues to slip as media competition continues to rise – especially in prime time, dropping 5% for the 2018-2019 TV season from the previous year, according to a Standard Media Index. Analysis of Nielsen Ad Intel data indicated linear network TV advertising was down $44.2 billion from $46.6 billion. SMI reports that, for the first time, total entertainment/news programming fell below the 50% mark for total annual TV network advertising revenue to a 49% share, totally $21.5 billion. Looking at a two-year period, national TV networks were down 1.5% to $44.2 billion for the 2018-2019 season (October 2018 through September 2019).

Three new Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood episodes premiere beginning Monday, January 6 on PBS KIDS. Each features fresh strategies to tackle with children in 2020, including how to stay calm at a restaurant and what’s neat about playing your own way.

Netflix announced the official title and premiere date of the C.J. Walker project starring Octavia Spencer. Four-part limited series Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker is set to debut on Friday, March 20.
Bravo launched Style & Living on BravoTV.com. The new “super vertical” is a source for lifestyle content including fashion, beauty, home, food and wellness.
TECH TALK
Instagram continues to refine its ecommerce strategy, including creating hashtags and curated feeds designed to spotlight particular product and service categories. The platform’s curated shopping account, @shop, has begun pushing astrology with #AstroWeek2020. Over the next week, @shop will feature small businesses in feeds and stories, with products being shoppable on Instagram.
Nielsen announced Gracenote’s expansion into Europe positions it as the leading OTT guide provider in the world, with coverage of more than 200 catalogs in 13 markets across North America, Europe, Latin America and APAC. Gracenote’s OTT guide offering is aimed at making video content searchable across multiple services, platforms and devices, allowing OTT services to elevate content visibility while enabling Smart TV makers and cable and satellite operators to increase ease of use.
Xumo has new enterprise deals in place with Sony and Panasonic. The company will build custom video streaming apps that will be integrated with both Sony and Panasonic smart TVs. Xumo already does something similar with LG Channels, an AVOD streaming service, offered on LG smart TVs. “As the leading free OTT service in the U.S., Xumo is eager to join forces and work through providing audiences their favorite streaming or local over-the-air channels through one intuitive experience,” said Xumo CEO Colin Petrie-Norris.

RATINGS
ABC dominated the final night of 2019 with its New Year’s Eve primetime lineup, garnering 8.4 million Total Viewers and 2.4/13 A18-49. Dick Clark’s Primetime New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2020: Part 1 led its 2-hour time period by wide margins from 8-10p among A18-49 (1.9/11), while Part 2 nabbed10.7 million total viewers, ranking as the highest rated entertainment telecast of any network in primetime this fall among A18-49 (3.2/17).
Monday’s 10p premiere of new A&E series Alaska PD garnered 613,000 A25-54, 471,000 A18-49 and 1.3 million Total Viewers. It was the #2 cable launch of the 2019/2020 TV season behind A&E’s Court Cam.
Rookie talk show stars Kelly Clarkson (1.5 Live+SD national Nielsen rating, up 15% from the week before and Tamron Hall (1.0, up 11%) were the only new syndicated series moving up in the session ending December 22. Clarkson was the season’s number one newcomer for the 15th straight week, scoring its biggest rating since its premiere week despite being in reruns. Hall matched its highest numbers of the season and was the top-rated show in its time period in major markets like Atlanta, where on WSB at 3p it outperformed all competition.
Magazines forging ahead were Access Hollywood (1.5, up 7%) and Daily Mail TV (0.9%, up 13%). Access matched its season high and jumped 17% in the W25-54 demo, while Daily Mail also equaled its best rating of the season and rose 25% among W25-54.
