Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 29, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing, coming to you from the NATPE 2008 convention in Las Vegas.

Paramount Pictures Digital Entertainment enters into a partnership with Habbo, the teen-targeted online virtual community, to develop merchandise and a range of virtual products that will be based on the three of the studio’s feature films, per THR.  According to the deal, Habbo gets the North American merchandising rights for Beowulf, Mean girls and the soon to be released The Spiderwick Chronicles.

MORE KIDS STUFF

With the success of MGM and Reveille’s new American Gladiators reality series on NBC, MGM domestic TV announced at NATPE yesterday it reaching into its library to bring the kid-targeted Gladiators 2000 (39×30), which ran in the mid-1990s, for off-network syndication for fall 2008.  Starring a very young Ryan Seacrest, Gladiators 2000 focused on competition as well as nutrition and fitness, and it was initially a companion to the original American Gladiators series.  Gladiators 2000 debuted several years after Nickelodeon GUTS, a similar physical competition series, which was hosted by Mike O’Malley.

Here at NATPE ReelTime, an internet TV network, has inked a VOD rights content deal with Nelvana Enterprises for its kids programming.  Under the pact, Nelvana’s kid’s titles including Rupert, Jacob Two-Two, My Dad the Rock Star, Ned’s Newt, Tales from the Cryptkeeper, Moville Mysteries, Dumb Bunnies, Elliot Moose among others, will be available at www.reeltime.com.

Cookie Jar Entertainment has licensed the first three seasons of its animated series Johnny Test to Brazil’s Rede Record.  The series will bow on Rede Record this year.  Last year, Johnny Test was acquired for air by Cartoon Network and Boomerang Latin America.

The first season of BRB Internacionals animated series Angus & Cheryl (104×2) has been acquired by RTL2 (Germany) for a February debut, and UCV TV (Chile).  Nickelodeon will debut the series in Italy next fall, and also holds the cable and satellite TV rights for Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Luxembourg, Scandinavia, Switzerland, and Holland.  Additionally, public TV channels taking the broadcast right to the series are, Radio Canada, which picks up the rights for most of Canada and France 3 (France).  Universal Pictures International Entertainment acquired the mobile rights for the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

Beginning this week The Jim Henson Company makes the first seasons of two of its series, cult favorites, Fraggle Rock (24 episodes) and Farscape (22 episodes) available for download on the iTunes Store.  Through a new deal with New Video and Henson, the entire series of Fraggle Rock (96 episodes) and Farscape will be available in the coming months.

Scholastic launches StudyJams!, its new subscription-based science and math homework help website for kids in grades 3-6.  Hosted by a group of animated characters, StudyJams! offers explanations through animated videos, karaoke songs, interactive tutorials and games, as well letting kids create and download their own MP3 songs.  The site was developed in conjunction with a nationwide panel of teachers.  Subscriptions are $9.95/month, $99/year, $79/year for one teacher.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Nickelodeon and Royal Caribbean International, Royal Caribbean Cruises owned cruise line, have entered into deal to launch the family-targeted Nickelodeon Family Cruise with Royal Caribbean.  The first cruise under the pact will set sail from Miami August 10-17, 2008, making four stops in the Caribbean.

Zula USA LLC inks a multi-year licensing partnership with Elmer’s Products, Inc., to create Zula Science Exploration Kits, the.  Designed for kids 5+/families, the interactive science kits are the first products based on The Zula Patrol series, which airs on public television.  The Zula Science Exploration Kits will be showcased at Toy Fair next month in NYC.

Sesame Workshop has signed a deal with the Solo Cup Company to create a line of kid-targeted paper plates, bowls and cups.  The Sesame Street themed paper products, which will feature Elmo, will be available from May 2008.  The new paper product line will be supported through a national cents-off FSI, an interactive brand web site, in-store floor displays, shelf signs and print ads.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Brown Johnson is appointed to the new position of President/Animation, Nickelodeon and MTVN Kids and Family Group.  Johnson, who had been EVP and Creative Director/Nickelodeon Preschool and GM/Noggin, will be responsible for development and production of all animated programming across Nickelodeon, as well as continuing to head development/production of all preschool programming.  She will continue to report to Cyma Zarghami, President/Nickelodeon and MTVN Kids and Family Group.  Johnson was key in the creation Nick Jr. programs such as Blue’s Clues, Dora the Explorer, The Wonder Pets among others.  Live action series and TV movie development/production will continue to be overseen by EVP Margie Cohn.  Go, Brown, Go!

Joe Yanarella is upped to SVP/Operations, Wizard Entertainment.  Yanarella will oversee and manage the Ad Sales: Special Operations Report and the Conventions Department, in addition to maintaining his editorial responsibilities.  A 14-year veteran of Wizard, Yanarella will report directly to COO Fred Pierce on all matters.

RATINGS

Disney Channel’s premiere of Minutemen, its 71st original movie, last Friday, January 25 (8-9:45p) was TV’s top show for the day among K6-11 (2.9 million) and Tweens 9-14 (2.6 million), as well as basic cable’s most watched telecast for the day with Total Viewers 2+ (6.5 million).  Minuteman’s audience grew start to finish with K6-11 up by +35%, with Tweens 9-14 up +50%, and an increase of + 40% among Total Viewers 2+.
