Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, August 23, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Discovery Education ( www.discoveryeducation.com) enters into a new deal with The Jim Henson Company that will see the entire preschool Sid the Science Kid available via Discovery Education Science for Elementary in the next few months.  The animated series, which airs on PBS Kids, is based on national science learning standards and the preschool science curriculum, Preschool Pathways to Science.  Sid the Science Kid revolves around a kid named Sid and his adventures during which he finds answers to questions using basic science principles.  Additionally, Discovery Education will add 51 news segments from PBS NewsHour, produced by MacNeil Lehrer Productions, for high school students by the end of year.  Finally, Discovery Education will add 16 new streaming video resources to its STEM Connect area. A curriculum-based and career development science resource to help teachers, the video resources will be available at no cost to Discover Education streaming subscribers as part of its Be the Future initiative.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Jim Carrey will star in Fox’s movie adaptation of the kids’ book Mr. Popper’s Penguins, per Deadline.  Mark Waters (Mean Girls, The Spiderwick Chronicles) will direct the movie, with Jared Stern writing the most recent version of the script by Sean Anders and John Morris.  The movie will be somewhat different from the book, with Carrey’s Mr. Popper a high-powered NYC business executive that inherits a small group of six penguins.  Life changes for Popper as he becomes attached to the penguins, now living in his fancy NYC apartment, a big deal goes awry and he almost winds up in jail.  In the end he discovers the importance of family.  The book, written by Richard and Florence Atwater and originally published in 1938, portrays Mr. Popper as a house painter who lives with his wife and after sending a letter to Admiral Drake, who is on expedition in Antarctica, receives a penguin in the mail from the Admiral.  Winding up with 12 penguins living in their home (it’s a bit of a longer story), the Poppers turn the penguins into an act, Popper’s Performing Penguins, to earn money to keep them all in the Popper home.

Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, the writing duo behind the first Iron Man movie, will pen the new live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles feature film, per Heat VisionPlatinum Dunes is producing the picture for Paramount.  Paramount and Nickelodeon acquired the TMNT rights last year.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Discovery Networks Asia Pacific is planning to introduce five more English-language channels in India, making it the largest broadcaster in the English-language market with 11 channels.  Discovery plans to add pay channels Discovery Kids, Discovery Home and Health, Discovery 3D, Investigation Discovery, and a Military Channel.  Earlier this year Discovery Networks Asia Pacific launched Discovery Science, Discovery Turbo and HD World in the market.  Discovery is currently developing 3D content for the US market, which will launch next year.

KidsCo continues its expansion across Asia by inking a new exclusive distribution pact with New Delhi Television (NDTV), which will carry the channel on its cable TV, DTH channels and digital platforms throughout India.  KidsCo recently expanded into Hong Kong, Taiwan and Indonesia.  KidsCo’s programming day offers a mix of animated and live action series and movies in blocks targeted to preschoolers, K6-11 and family viewing.

The Academy of Television Arts & Science (ATAS) on Saturday night awarded the 2009-10 Creative Arts Primetime Emmy Awards for programs and individual achievements at the 62nd Emmy Awards ceremony at the Nokia Theatre L.A. MARKETING/LICENSING

BBC Worldwide launches the Deadly 60 ( www.deadly60cards.com ) trading card game this week in the UK.  The game is based on CBBC‘s wildlife series Deadly 60.  Hosted by Steve Backshall, Deadly 60 is a fact-based series targeted to K6-12 that looks at the world’s deadliest animals. The new Deadly 60 trading card game includes 165 cards with pictures and facts from the first two seasons of the series.  The cards will be available in packs of eight, including “Rare” shiny cards and “Super Rare Rainbow” shiny cards, as well as deadly “Skull” cards, that act as jokers in the game.  To support the launch, sample cards are available in other BBC and Egmont kid’s titles, with advertising support across BBC Magazines’ titles.  Additionally, there will be online promotions and competitions.

If you have spent any time with kids lately, particularly girls, or in a store of almost any kind, you’ll know just how pervasive the multi-colored animal/figure shaped bands/accessory have become.  Following up on that trend Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing releases The Band Book and The Band App ($.99), for iPhone/iPod/iPad.  The Band App lets users blend bands together to make their own and share them virtually with friends. The Band Book features a range of photos, trivia and the Ultimate Collector’s Checklist, a full listing of all bands.

RATINGS

Disney Online sets new online traffic records with 36 million unique visitors for July 2010, up versus its previous high by 2 million unique visitors to the site in June 2009, per comScore Media Metrix.  The July measurement was an increase of 16% from the previous month.  Disney Online attributes the increase, at least in part, to its Disney Games, Disney Channel and Disney Movies online offerings:

  • Online games were up +6% vs. the prior month, including its game and virtual world sites such as Club Penguin, which had more monthly traffic than other virtual worlds, while Toontown Online was up +64% in unique visitors and Disney Fairies Pixie Hallow grew by +80% month-over-month.
  • Disney Online also drew a lot of traffic in July likely due to the popularity of Toy Story 3, as well as apps and games for Toy Story, the upcoming Camp Rock 2, and Radio Disney.
  • Additionally, Disney Online reached new highs in July with 1.9 million mobile video views and 900,000 game starts
