X is launching a TV app, the company announced on Tuesday. “X is changing everything,” posted X CEO Linda Yaccarino, who knows a thing or two about TV. “Soon we’ll bring real-time, engaging content to your smart TVs with the X TV App. This will be your go-to companion for a high-quality, immersive entertainment experience on a larger screen.” Adding that “We’re still building it,” Yaccarino offered a list of what to expect, including a trending video algorithm; AI-powered topics that will organize videos by subject; a cross-device experience; and enhanced video search. It’s all “coming soon to most smart TVs,” promised Yaccarino. A preview video showed Tucker Carlson’s interview with Vladimir Putin, and footage of a SpaceX rocket lifting off. As for advertising, “We’re focusing on launching this new feature for consumers first, but we do plan to monetize it, and will discuss different forms of partnerships — and that may include ads,” said a note to X’s corporate partners.

Integral Ad Science has earned Media Rating Council accreditation for its sophisticated invalid traffic (SIVT) filtration for the CTV environment. “This accreditation marks our continued commitment to transparency and quality in the CTV space and further demonstrates our position as a leader in providing accredited products and services to our clients,” said Kevin Alvero, IAS Chief Compliance Officer. “As marketers allocate increased spend towards CTV and OTT to reach audiences, it is increasingly important to ensure these environments are protected from fraud.” The accreditation covers IAS’s SIVT filtration and reporting in CTV environments as applied to video impressions, viewable impressions, and related viewability metrics.

The CW has added two more episodes to the current sixth season of “All American,” for a total of 15. The sports drama also airs on Netflix, via a deal between the streamer and Warner Bros.

Nexstar Media Group is asking the FCC to cancel its order that WPIX New York be divested by Mission Broadcasting, and repeal the $1.2 million fine the FCC imposed as part of its Notice of Apparent Liability. “Through the NAL, the Commission seeks to wield its enforcement authority in a myriad of improper ways,” said Nexstar, claiming that the agreements under which Nexstar runs the station for Mission are legal and approved by the commission. The FCC ruled that control of WPIX makes Nextstar exceed the limit for how much of the country its stations can reach.

The Badger Agency is transitioning into a new shop, the Futura Collective. Madonna Badger will remain Chief Creative Officer of the reimagined entity, and Debby Reiner, former President, Global Clients/Grey Worldwide New York has joined as CEO. Also onboard as founders are Kelli Tuggle, most recently COO of Grey North America, as President, and Badger agency vet Celeste Holt-Walters as Chief Content Officer.

Former Republican presidential candidate and governor of Arkansas from 2015-23 Asa Hutchinson has joined Scripps News as a political analyst. “I am excited to be part of the Scripps News team as we head into one of the most consequential elections in history,” said Hutchinson. “Scripps News is committed to balance in its coverage of politics, and that is what America needs at this critical moment.”

DirecTV struck deals with Cineverse and Scripps Networks that add seven new channels to its satellite and streaming offerings. From Cineverse comes The Bob Ross Channel, Comedy Dynamics, Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan, Dove Channel and MeatEater TV. “We are creating a second-to-none lineup of streaming channels that will allow our customers to choose from a wider variety of genres or explore their most avid interests in greater depth,” said Rebecca Nelson, SVP of Content and Programming at DirecTV. “This new relationship with Cineverse allows us to draw from one of the industry’s most dynamic portfolios to strategically add more channels as our customers begin to discover and embrace these new options.” From Scripps comes Court TV and Scripps News.

Sissy Spacek has signed on for a recurring role opposite Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate in FX’s “Dying for Sex.” The limited series is based on the hit podcast of the same name.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

“Shoresey” returns to Hulu for season three on Friday, June 21, with all six episodes. The “Letterkenny” spinoff sees the foul-mouthed titular character continue his quest to ensure that his hockey team never loses again.

AIM TV (“Raw Travel”) docuseries “My Summer in Ukraine” premieres April 27-28 with Chapter One: “Silence is Death.” The four-parter is based on Raw Travel producer and host Robert G. Rose’s travels in Ukraine in the summer of 2023, and showcases the indomitable spirit of Ukrainians in a war zone.

The new season of JLTV’s “The J Report” premieres Sunday, April 28 at 9p, examining the issue of youth homelessness.

Season nine of “Below Deck Mediterranean” sets sail Monday, June 3 at 9p on Bravo. Capt. Sandy Yawn is joined by Chief Stew Aesha Scott, who returns to the Med where her yachting career began.

Joy Taylor and MJ Acosta-Ruiz host season two of Fuse Media’s “Like A Girl.” The company also announced the launch of “She Leads,” a short-form series celebrating women breaking barriers.

STREAMING

Prime Video’s “Reacher” was the most watched title in 1Q24 among all paid streamers, followed by “NCIS,” available on a number of SVoD services, and “Yellowstone” on Peacock, according to Kantar’s Entertainment on Demand data. In fact, dramas accounted for 8 of 10 top titles watched in the past 3 months among SVoD subscribers, as dramas and crime series rise in popularity in the US. As the long-running, bingeable series gain in popularity, it is harder for streaming originals and films to compete for screen time, notes Kantar – in fact, among the top 20 most cited titles viewed in Q1, only “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” make the cut.

Pluto TV is going all in on “South Park,” with a special category for the animated series. Multiple channels are dedicated to comedy in each market, including a “South Park” Main Channel, available across all international markets where Pluto TV is present, as well as a series of “South Park” Themed Channels across Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Canada, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Latin America and Australia, featuring a selection of “South Park” episodes dedicated to the theme of the month.

Hemisphere Media Group, the media company targeting the US Hispanic and Latin American markets, has launched FAST channel WAPA+ on The Roku Channel. The channel leverages the programming of Puerto Rico’s WAPA-TV.

Plex has partnered with the National Football League to stream NFL Channel, the league’s free linear FAST Channel. The partnership will kick off in time for coverage of the 2024 NFL Draft from Thursday, April 25 through Saturday, April 27.

TECH TALK

Mundo Hispano Digital, the parent company of MundoNow.com, announced the launch of advertising product MundoNow Connect, aimed at delivering more immersive advertising experiences to brands, with accurate targeting. “MundoNow Connect provides reach and scale for brands seeking CTV inventory against content that Latinos actually watch, rather than unwatched content with inaccurate targeting,” said Rene Alegria, President and CEO of MundoNow. “Access to accurate, proprietary first-party audience data, and smart leveraging of new adtech will win today’s CTV race, every time. Microsoft has introduced Phi-3 Mini, a cost-effective, small AI model that can perform tasks such as content creation and creation of social media posts while using smaller amounts of data. The company also announced a partnership with Cognizant to expand the adoption of generative AI solutions by enterprises.

SPORTS ROUNDUP

The National Lacrosse League saw 1,060,706 game attendees sail through its turnstiles during the 2023-24 regular season, a 2.0% increase compared to last season, and the second time the NLL has seen consecutive seasons exceeding one million in attendance in its 37-year history.

S4C announced “Ar y Ffin, a co-commission with UKTV and produced by Severn Screen. The six-part series will air on S4C and on UKTV’s crime drama channel, Alibi.

Irish dark comedy crime drama “Obituary,” co-produced by UK’s APC Studios and Irish production company Magamedia, has been sold by APC to Netflix (UK), BritBox (Australia), TVNZ (New Zealand), Proximus (Belgium), RTS (French-speaking Switzerland), RTP (Portugal), BluTV (Turkey & Cyprus) and TET (Latvia).

The season 16 finale of MTV’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race” was the reality show’s highest-rated episode in 13 years, with 0.84 among A18-34, up 67% versus last year, and 0.76 among A18-49, up 28%.
