BRANDS AND ADVERTISING

Two Toyota Camry ads during NBC’s Sunday Night Football on Sunday were the first from Toyota Total, the car company’s multicultural marketing team that includes Saatchi & Saatchi Los Angeles, Burrell Communications, Conill, InterTrend Communications and Zenith. The “One Bold Choice Leads to Another” campaign, which Toyota said is aimed at the “transcultural mainstream,” also includes sponsorship of an awards show on DramaFever, the video-streaming site focused on international TV. The Camry is the U.S.’s best-selling auto among Hispanics, Asian-Americans and African-Americans, said the company.

The “walls need to come down” between resource allocation for general market and multi-cultural audiences, says Total Market pioneer Jeffrey L. Bowman, Senior Partner/Managing Director of The Ogilvy Group, and keynote speaker for the Cynopsis Future TV Summit October 16 in NYC. Click here for details on an event focused on the major issues facing the television industry right now.

Online display ad spending will nearly double by 2019, forecasts Forrester Research in a new study, reaching $37.6 billion. Programmatic, video advertising and mobile display will drive the most growth, according to the report. The offline market will grow at an average rate of 1 percent a year, to reach $239 billion, with cable TV leading at 4.8 percent, predicts Forrester.

AT&T AdWorks announced an agreement with IHS Automotive to enable marketers to measure the effectiveness of their advertising campaigns, using Polk statistical data from IHS to measure the impact of TV automotive advertising on actual vehicle purchases. “Automotive advertisers will obtain greater insights about when to air their advertisements and the resulting purchases at local dealerships,” said Mike Welch, AdWorks president.

DISTRIBUTION AND CARRIAGE

ESPN and Turner Sports renewed their contracts with the NBA for nine years, starting with the 2016-2017 season. ESPN sister net ABC continues as home for NBA finals, with both landing 44 post-season games. TNT adds 12 regular season games, for 64 total, and will be home to exclusive Thursday night regular season double-headers. Price tag: an estimated $1 billion each for ESPN and Turner, according to reports, about double the current deals.

Suddenlink and Discovery Communications announced the renewal of their distribution agreement for Discovery’s 13 networks. “We’re especially pleased that we’ll be able to soon deliver Discovery’s unique branded content to our customers on a variety of devices,” said Kathy Payne, Suddenlink SVP and chief programming office.

SYNDICATION

NBCUniversal Domestic Television Distribution talkers Maury, The Jerry Springer Show and The Steve Wilkos Show have all been sold through September 2018 to station groups including Tribune, Sinclair, Hearst, Weigel and Sunbeam.
