The Hub Network relaunches as Discovery Family Channel effective October 13, its focus broadening to serve families in primetime as well as children during the day. Tom Cosgrove has been appointed GM. “While the trend is for family members to scatter at home to pursue different interests, we believe television can actually be an inspiration for bringing families together,” said Discovery group president Henry Schleiff, who will oversee the transition and to whom Cosgrove will report.“Our goal for Discovery Family Channel is to curate and program content that will grab entire families.”

IN THE NEWS

Starting this Sunday, September 28, there’ll be a double dose of CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood. After the morning news program airs on CBS,  Smithsonian Channel, a joint venture of CBS Corp.’s Showtime Networks and the Smithsonian Institution, will rebroadcast the show at 2p, and up to four times later during the week. Launched in 1979, Sunday Morning finished the 2013-2014 season as the top Sunday morning news program in viewers and among A25-54 (averaging 5.79 million viewers and 1.4/7 in the demo), posting its best audience delivery since the advent of People Meters in 1987.

CBS switched its game plan for upcoming Monday nights. The net will air back-to-back eps of Big Bang Theory (the second a repeat) for the next three weeks at 8p, instead of following the hit comedy with Mom, which was to have had its season two premiere September 29 at 8:30. The Millers premieres in the 8:30p slot October 20, with Mom premiering Thursday, October 30 at 8:30p, when Bang makes its move back to Thursdays with the exit of Thursday Night Football.

DirecTV shareholders put their stamp of approval on Thursday to the sale of the company to AT&T, with over 99 percent in favor of the merger. Still to come: approval by federal regulators.

Fox is rattling the format of ratings-challenged reality experiment Utopia. Next week viewers enter the picture when the cast selects two Utopians for possible exile, with Utopiatv.com passport members adding a third. One of the three will leave; two two new candidates arrive to compete for the open spot. Utopia airs tonight at 8p.

Author and U.S. Army veteran Wes Moore will host a live, all-day “American Graduate Day 2014” event, streamed from the Tisch WNET Studios in NYC. “Public television is the best way to tell honest, thorough and complete stories,” said Moore. “So many times we have fragmented conversations about education – we talk about early childhood or K-12 or higher ed – and the truth is… it’s about the whole educational journey.” Broadcast on Saturday, September 27 runs from 11a-6p on WNET.

Discovery Communications and nonprofit Discovery Learning Alliance, launched by Discovery Comm. in 1997, announced their participation in Clinton Global Initiative CHARGE (The Collaborative for Harnessing Ambition and Resources for Girls’ Education). Discovery Project will work to get more girls in school in Ghana, Kenya and Nigeria, and help develop more effective teachers.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Comedian Tommy Johnagrin will star in a comedy for CBS inspired by his life. The project, exec produced by Bill Lawrence, has a pilot production commitment; Warner Bros. Television will produce with Lawrence’s Doozer.

NBC gave a pilot production commitment to conspiracy thriller Endgame, from The Blacklist’s Sony Pictures Television and Davis Entertainment. John Rogers (Leverage) will write.

UK’s Tern TV takes flight with two new commissions. Air Ambulance ER, a co-production with GroupM Entertainment for Sky One, follows “chopper doctor” teams in Britain. Documentary Roman Britain from the Air, for ITV, uses aerial photography to show what Roman Britain looked like.

TNT ordered a pilot, Lumen, about a family transported to a mystical alternate world. TNT Original Productions will produce in association with Steve Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, Full Fathom Five and ABC Signature Studios.

Who wants to be a marijuana millionaire? That’s what web reality series The Marijuana Show is finding out, with 22 “ganjapreneurs” competing for a chance to win financing and mentorship for their business ideas (hemp butter, anyone?). Coming up: an intense – yet, we imagine, oddly mellow – boot camp October 7-12 in Denver with six finalists. “We love the freedom of the web-series format to tell these entrepreneurs’ stories,” said show co-creator Karen Paull. “I think we’ve found in the push for marijuana legalization that sometimes you just need to get out there, take a risk and do it and the culture will follow. I’m not sure conventional television is there yet.”

COMING UP

TV One has a treat for viewers: an anthology of three short horror films just in time for Halloween. The Fright Night Files airs Saturday, October 18 at 8p. “Though we have been successful in the past with genre-based programming with our Easter and Christmas offerings, it was important to expand into this specific space, where there are so few representations in African American programming,” said Cathy Hughes, founder and chairperson of Radio One Inc.

RETURNING SERIES

CBS renewed Big Brother for seasons 17 and 18, to run in the summers of 2015 and 2016. The most recent iteration of the reality hit, which had its finale on Wednesday, was up 2 percent in viewers (to 7.56 million) and 4 percent in A18-49 (to 2.7/9). After-show Big Brother After Dark will also be back, airing exclusively on upcoming cable net POP, rebranded from TVGN.

Syfy summer series Dominion and Defiance have been renewed with 13-ep orders. Dominion averaged 1.6 million during its freshman run; Defiance averaged 1.56 million during season two. Dramas return in 2015.

Season three of WE tv’s Tamar & Vince launches Thursday, October 23 at 10p, with the singer readying her tour. Sophomore season of the reality show delivered 1.1 million total viewers in Live+3, a 29 percent boost over season one.

Kelly Nishimoto, host of bridal reality show Something Borrowed, Something New, takes on a new role on the season premiere when she reveals she’s the one getting married and needs help getting ready for her big day. Series from Trium Entertainment returns Friday, October 10 at 10p.

Outlander picks up where its midseason finale (Saturday, September 27 at 9p) leaves off on April 4. The series, adapted from the Diana Gabaldon best-sellers, has already been renewed for season two.

BRANDS AND ADVERTISING

Starcom MediaVest Group will integrate Nielsen Catalina Solutions into its TV planning system, to assist advertisers in targeting consumers segments with high potential for purchase, then select programs to reach those consumers. “Media’s next wave is integrating large-scale data sets and software platforms into existing planning and buying systems to deliver the most effective advertising to the right audience,” said NCS CEO Mike Nazzaro

Audi, Chevrolet and Lincoln will increase their marketing budgets next year, reports AdAge, quoting execs for the car companies at the Automotive News Marketing Seminar. “We’re building the brand, we’re growing the brand, we’ve got new products to launch,” said director of Global Lincoln Matt VanDyke

CASTING

Rachel McAdams
has been offered the female lead in season two of HBO’s True Detective, reports Variety. She would join Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn.

Saturday Night Live alum Molly Shannon will guest on season two of CBS’s The Millers. Comedy returns Thursday, October 30 at 8:30p.

Craig Robinson (The Office) will return as a likable car thief on season two of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, reports EW. Season two of the Fox comedy premieres Sunday at 8:30p

DISTRIBUTION AND CARRIAGE

DCD Rights sold Bridezillas and spinoff Marriage Boot Camp to ITV’s new lifestyle and entertainment channel, ITVBe. Head of acquired series Sasha Breslau said the reality shows are the right fit for the new channel because they feature “real lives, and big characters.”

Arts net Ovation is partnering with Shine International to distribute new original docu-series Young Marvels, following the journeys of eight gifted children. The series, produced by Tremendous! Entertainment, debuted in the U.S. this summer.

Multi-format weather news service WeatherNation is partnering with WAAY-TV ABC 31 to broadcast 24/7 weather news on digital TV channel 31.2 across Huntsville, Decatur, and Florence, AL, and on area cable systems across northern Alabama.
