NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
On the heels of Machinima’s $24 million funding round, Vimeo and the digital network announced a content development and distribution partnership yesterday. Machinima will create exclusive programming for Vimeo On Demand and the Machinima Talent Network of 30,000 creators will be eligible for dedicated financing from Vimeo. Warner Bros. Entertainment and other investors recently backed Machinima, which currently boasts 430 million subscribers, 170 million monthly unique viewers and 3.7 billion monthly views.
 
Pee-wee Herman
will make his comeback on Netflix. Pee-wee’s Big Holiday will be produced by Judd Apatow (Bridesmaids) and the main star himself, Paul Reubens, and will be directed by John Lee (Broad City). Netflix currently streams a slew of the character’s classics, such as Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, Big Top Pee-wee, The Pee-wee Herman Show, and both seasons of Pee-wee’s Playhouse. There is no set release date yet.
 
Sound Advice, the new web series starring SNL’s Vanessa Bayer, premiered on IFC’s web platform Comedy Crib. Sponsored by Hyundai and produced by Above Average, Bayer plays a clueless media coach who gives advice (and insults) to musicians trying to improve their images. The first of 12 episodes features Weird Al Yankovic; future guests will include Chromeo, HAIM, Nick Jonas, Jenny Lewis, Leighton Meester, Sleater-Kinney, and The Vamps. The debut episode will also air on IFC’s Comedy Bang! Bang! on Feb. 27.
 
Frederator Studios and Australian design and animation firm Studio Moshi signed a co-production deal to bring the online short Rocket Dog to linear TV. The kids series, inspired by a five-minute short created by Australian animator Mel Roach, originally hit 1.5 million views on Channel Frederator Network’s Cartoon Hangover two years ago. Through the agreement, Frederator will manage TV distribution in North America and Moshi will handle it in all other territories of the 52 11-minute episodes planned for season one. The co-production is the first content deal from Frederator’s Too Cool! Cartoons incubator, which also developed TV’s Bee & PuppyCat.
 
Free movie and TV streaming service Popcornflix landed on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 consoles in the U.S. and Canada yesterday. The company plans to roll out free streaming services for the PS4 and PS3 in Latin America next. Popcornflix programming is available on other platforms, including Xbox 360, Xbox One, Roku, iOS devices, Android devices, Windows 8 and Samsung, Bravia, Panasonic and Google Smart TVs.
 
Discovery Digital Network
announced that YouTube celeb, gamer and animator Steven Suptic joined the web video platform of Discovery Communications as a Producer and Host. Suptic, known for his channel MlgHwnT (more than 500K subscribers), will become part of Discovery Digital Network’s SourceFed team and channel. “I am excited to collaborate with the most creative minds in the industry…and to build a career based solely on Minecraft videos for the rest of my life,” Suptic said.
 
Oscar-nominated director Spike Lee joined men’s publisher Complex Media as a Board Advisor for video and branded content. Lee will provide his agency, Spike DDB, and his production company, 40 Acres Band and a Mule Filmworks, to collaborate on short films, branded programming, long-form content with Complex.

Real-time analytics company Metamarkets raised $15 million in funding, led by Data Collective. Media entrepreneur John Battelle and City National Bank join existing investors Khosla Ventures, IA Ventures, True Ventures and Village Ventures. The company recently reported that it has doubled its client base and tripled its year-over-year revenues.

 
 
ADVERTISING + AD PLATFORMS
 

Technology and digital company PK4 Media released new programmatic platform XPS Direct. “Our new programmatic technology gives advertisers a way to build audience profiles and launch display and video campaigns cross-platform,” PK4 Media CEO and Founder Tom Alexander said. PK4’s clients include companies such as Amazon, Amgen, AT&T, Ford, NBCUniversal, and Procter & Gamble.
 
Digital Advanced TV and analytics firm Sorenson Media and media consultant Frank N. Magid Associates (Magid) partnered to provide research on Sorenson’s services. The two companies will present research on consumer perceptions about Advanced TV at NAB 2015 in Las Vegas.
 
Programmatic ad company OpenX announced that it will be the exclusive provider of ad serving and monetization for e-sports brand Major League Gaming’s digital advertising. MLG will use OpenX’s platform to optimize its digital advertising inventory and manage directly sold portfolio, Real-Time-Bidding (RTB), and ad networks in one auction.
