Nielsen and Integrated Media Measurement Inc. (IMMI) launched the first daily out-of-home national TV ratings. The syndicated service, which signed on Zenith Media and ESPN as initial charter clients, estimates audience levels for television viewing in such places as offices, fitness clubs, hotels and bars. In the inaugural results from July, FOX’s House led among broadcast networks and among cable networks ESPN’s Home Run Derby had the most out-of-home viewers in primetime at 570,000 each. Between June 30 and August 10, the special event/sports program with the highest number of out-of-home viewers was the Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony on NBC at 1.1 million viewers. The national out-of-home ratings are offered by Nielsen as a stand-along service to clients. On the local level, Nielsen will begin later this year to offer out-of-home ratings to six markets: New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Houston and Denver.

Don LaFontaine, 68, the voice behind thousands of movie trailers, television commercials as well as the Academy Award telecasts during a 33-year career, died Monday in Los Angeles. Don, who was best known for his catch-phrase “in a world where … ” was survived by his wife singer-actress Nita Whitaker and three daughters.
