Beginning Friday, October 10 the Friday night line-up will go something like this: The Secret Saturdays (premiere episodes); Star Wars: The Clone Wars; Star Wars: The Clone Wars (premiere episodes); Ben 10: Alien Force (premiere episodes).
KidsCo is one of four Asian channels that NBC Universal Global Networks is set to launch in Cambodia on Star Digital TV from September 9, according to Worldscreen.com. The other channels in the package are Sci Fi, Universal Channel and Hallmark Channel. In all KidsCo is available in seven Asian markets.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
British Actor Tim Roth has signed on to star in the Sky1 movie adaptation of Skellig, author David Almond’s young adult fantasy book of the same name, per Guardian.com. The movie, which will premiere first on Sky 1 and Sky1 HD in spring 2009 prior to being released theatrically, begins shooting in Cardiff this year. Skellig also stars Kelly MacDonald (No Country for Old Men) and John Simm (Doctor Who), as well as young actor Bill Milner (Son of Rambow). The movie is the first production as part of Sky1’s new $17.8 million HD drama development fund, and is being produced by Feel Films/Taking a Line for a Walk in association with the Wales Creative IP Fund and Limelight.
MORE KIDS STUFF
In Canada Family Channel launches Family First Fridays this Friday, September 5. Family First Fridays is designed to be a place for kids to tune in for sneak previews as well as find out about new contests and advance tickets for various shows and live events, online events and so on, which will be announced each Friday night at 7:30p, just before the Friday night Popcorn Pix movie. The weekly ‘announcement’ will be supported online at Family.ca where viewers can turn for additional information. Beginning this October, Family First Fridays will get its own hosts, who will take viewers on location for behind-the-scenes looks at Family Channel series including interviews with the stars.
IAC Consumer Applications & Portals, Inc. (IAC CAP) will launch Zwinky Cuties, the new girl 6+-targeted virtual world that is an extension of the teen-aimed Zwinky site later this month. Zwinky Cuties gets an official kick-off with a free mini-concert by Jordan Pruitt (Hollywood Records) broadcast live from the Times Square Studios in NYC, on Tuesday, September 16 at 4p.
B*tween Productions has signed a deal with US Olympic gold medalist Nastia Liukin to serve as a member and role model for its social network Beacon Street Girls, which launched in beta form earlier this summer. Liukin’s tweenage fans will be able to leave her messages on her own Club BSG locker whiteboard as well as read interviews with the sports star. Additionally, through the Club BSG Gymnastics Team site Liukin will talk to girls about self-esteem and making good healthy choices. Tween girls love gymnastic stars and social networks have already proven to be a popular place for Olympic athletes, multi-gold medalist Michael Phelps has a gazillion friends via his Facebook page, OK really more than 1 million friends, but still makes him that sites most popular person.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Indie producer Novel Entertainment inks a new deal with Abbey Home Media Group for the exclusive UK DVD distribution rights to the second series of the CITV 2D animated series Horrid Henry. DVD titles featuring new episodes of Horrid Henry will begin rolling out from summer 2009. Currently in production the second season of Horrid Henry is comprised of 52×11 and will begin airing on ITV1 and CITV in spring 2009. This fall 2008, Novel launches a new Horrid Henry live stage show in the UK, produced by Watershed Productions in association with Sheffield Theatres. Horrid Henry is of course based on the Horrid Henry books by Francesca Simon and illustrated by Tony Ross. Orion Children’s Books publishes the books in the UK.
Scholastic Media teams with Party City, the discount party store chain, for Gets Goosebumps, a Halloween 2008 promotion. Under the deal Party City will feature a special Goosebumps-themed section in its Halloween department, which will include Goosebumps themed signage, books, audio books and costumes as well as certain Goosebumps products that contain discount coupons. Party City’s website is running a Costume Sneak Peek promotion where consumers can win the new Goosebumps HorrorLand video game and a Wii System, it will also be featured on Scholastic’s Goosebumps website.
Bulldog Licensing picks up the rights for Gogo’s Crazy Bones in the UK. Gogo’s Crazy Bones are a line of collectable figures, targeted to K4-11, which are produced by Magic Box International and Promociones Premier International. Many in the US will remember them as Crazy Bones, they were popular here in the late 1990s early 200os. Based on an ancient game, each pack of Gogo’s contains three figures and stickers, and can be used to play different games. Bulldog has already singed several deals for the property including: Halsall (wheeled toys); Portico (greeting cards); and Pyramid (posters).
