Cynopsis: Kids!

09/02/09

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 2, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Nickelodeon will launch its new game show, BrainSurge, on Monday, September 28 at 4:30p.  Set to air weekday afternoons, BrainSurge challenges kids in three levels of competition including in visual, memory and other mental abilities.  Additionally, kids at home are invited to play at home online at www.nick.com/brainsurge , which currently features a series of Brain Training mini games.  In addition to featuring every day kids as contestants, the network has produced two episodes featuring its own stars including Miranda Cosgrove, Keke Palmer, Jerry Trainor, Nat Wolff and Victoria Justice among others.  Executive produced by Clay Newbill for 310 Entertainment, Scott A. Stone (Legends of the Hidden Temple) for Stone & Company Entertainment and David A. Hurwitz, the series is based on The Tokyo Broadcasting System’s series Brain Survivor.  Nickelodeon has a long and strong history with game shows, including its most successful game show  Double Dare.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The Broadway musical Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark may not be as dead as the endless rumors would have had us believe.  According to a report in Variety, the rumor mill is spinning with word that the financially troubled production will indeed resume production this week or maybe next, with at least some folks being called back to work.  Per the report  there is no connection to production on the musical picking up again and yesterday’s news that Disney was acquiring Marvel.  The production stalled earlier last month due to “cash-flow” issues.  There is no official word as of yet.  Directed by Julie Taymor (The Lion King on Broadway, Across The Universe, among others), Spider-Man, Turn Off The Dark features music and lyrics by U2’s Bon and The Edge.  No word yet either on if the musical will open on time, it had been set to begin previews in February 2010 and open in March.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Boomerang celebrates Scooby Doo’s 40th birthday this weekend with two seven-hour marathons 2-9p on Saturday and Sunday, September 5 and 6.  On Saturday, Scooby and the gang will solve 17 mysteries, including their first adventure from the original premiere episode, What a Night for a Knight.  Sunday will feature The New Scooby-Doo Movies, the second series and the only series to feature hour-long episodes, which features lots of animated celebrity guests such as Josie and the Pussycats, the Harlem Globetrotters, Speed Buggy and Batman and Robin among others.

Disney Channel celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with programming for kids and families from Tuesday, September 15.  Some for the programming featured on the network during the month includes:

  • Gotta Kick It Up (Tuesday, September 15 at 8p)  Based on a real-life experience the show stars America Ferrera as dot.com executive-turned-school teacher and volunteer dance team coach that motivates a group of Latina schoolgirls to reach their potential and beat the odds.
  • A Handy Manny mini-marathon (Friday, September 18, 9-11a) including the new episode The Great Donate/Abuelita in a Fix (9a)
  • Wilmer Valderrama (Handy Manny) and Maria Canals-Barrera (Wizards of Waverly Place) will host interstitials highlighting Hispanic traditions. The interstitials will also feature kids from around the country sharing cultural traditions such as La Arana, Los Pollitos, salsa dancing and Quinceaneras.

Waybuloo, the mixed live-action/CGI animated preschool series, joins CBeebies‘ nightly show the Bedtime Hour on Monday, September 7 at 6p.  The Bedtime Hour also features In the Night Garden at 6:20p and Bedtime Story at 6:50p.  Produced by The Foundation, a unit of RDF Media Group, Waybuloo launched on CBeebies in May 2009.

Portfolio Entertainment completes new sales deals for kid-targeted series Spellz (52×30) and the preschool series Igloo-Gloo (64×15).  Viacom18 Media acquires Spellz for India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and Maldives.  Additionally, Marcom Projects picks up the educational rights to Spellz for Australia and New Zealand.  JimJam takes the rights to Igloo-Gloo for its Italian feed.

4Kids Entertainment inks new broadcast deals for the animated series Dinosaur King (79×30) with Lagardere Networks’ Gulli TV and Canal J (France), Network Ten (Australia) and RedeTV (Brazil).  Additionally, 4Kids re-ups its deals for the series with YTV (Canada) and Disney XD (Spain).  These deals come on the heels of recent broadcast pacts for Dinosaur King with Orlando Kids (the Balkans region) and Canal Panda (Pay TV, Portugal and Portuguese-speaking Africa).

Sesame Workshop, the Departments of Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, and Education have partnered to launch a new, national PSA (public service ad) campaign that is designed to encourage US kids and families to practice healthy habits to prevent the spread of the H1N1 flu virus.  You can check out the PSA campaign at www.flu.gov. This past spring Sesame Workshop produce four versions of a TV PSA featuring Sesame Street’s Elmo and Gordon explaining the importance of washing your hands and other simple things that can help everyone stay healthy as well as demonstrating these activities.  These four PSAs have been reformatted to promote flu.gov.  The PSAs are an extension of Sesame’s Healthy Habits for Life initiative.
