09/28/11

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 28, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

HarperCollins Publishers acquires debut novelist Soman Chainani‘s fantasy book trilogy The School for Good and Evil, an action/adventure/romance story that revolves around a school where regular boys and girls are trained to be fairy tale heroes or villains.  Jane Startz, founder of Jane Startz Productions, sold the trilogy in a preemptive deal to Phoebe Yea, Editorial Director, HarperCollins Children’s Books.  The first title in the series is slated for worldwide release in spring 2013.  Starz and her company are attached to produce the movie adaptation of the books.  Translation rights for The School for Good and Evil will be handled by HarperCollins in New York.

Vodka Capital and Grupo Planeta compete a significant book publishing deal for the 3D CGI animated preschool series Jelly Jamm.  Under the pact, Grupo Planeta will publish a wide range of Jelly Jamm books in Spain, France, Italy, Portugal and Latin America from 2012.  By the end of this fall the series will have launched in 150 countries.  Turner Broadcasting debuted Jelly Jamm this month on Cartoonito in Europe, Middle East and Africa.  The series will also bow in Latin America on Discovery Kids on October 10, 2011, followed by Televisa next year.  Later on this fall, the series will also be available free to air channels including Clan /RTVE (Spain), RTP (Portugal), and Boing (Italy, Turkey and the Middle East).

MipJunior ( www.mipworld.com/mipjunior) and the London Book Fair ( www.londonbookfair.co.uk) are smartly partnering to introduce the inaugural Books-to-TV Exchange, which will take place in Cannes this Sunday, October 2 during MipJunior.  Comprised of a series of events, the goal of the Books-to-TV Exchange is to bring together kid’s book and e-publishers with producers to identify new properties and potential projects that can be developed for TV.  Publishers slated to attend the new venture include Penguin, Nathan Edition, Random House, Bayard, C.A.L. and Editions Dupuis. Some of the features of the Books-to-TV Exchange include a case study session that will look at examples of successful partnerships between the TV and publishing industries to show how to adapt books for media.  Two successful book-to-screen transpositions, initiated by Darrall Macqueen and Walker Books & Walker Productions, will be presented and analyzed by a panel of experts.  The London Book Fair (LBF) is part of the Reed Exhibitions Books and Publishing Group.  Reed Exhibitions is the parent company of MipJunior organizer Reed Midem.
