Kelsey Grammer’s upcoming scripted drama series Boss has not yet premiered though the network, Starz Entertainment has granted a 10-episode second season with production commencing early next year. Boss, with eight episodes is set to open on Starz October 21 at 10p and stars Grammer headlining his first drama series playing Chicago Mayor Tom Kane. The inaugural episode is also directed by Gus Van Sant who makes his television directorial debut. Boss is produced by Lionsgate Television and created by Farhad Safinia.
New primetime novela Una Familia Con Suerte (A Fortunate Family) debuts on Univision Network October 4 at 8p. The comedy involves a strange connection and a turn of good luck that changes the lives of a poor family and a wealthy owner of a large cosmetics business. The novela stars Mayrin Villanueva, Alicia Machado, Luz Elena Gonzalez, Daniela Castro, Arath de la Torre among others.
Younger male-skewing network, G4 is partnering with the US Navy on a new docu-series, Bomb Patrol: Afghanistan launching October 25 at 10p. The 10-episode series will allow viewers to be embedded with Navy soldiers in Afghanistan working as part of the US Navy’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, the world’s elite combat force for countering Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), WMD and other weapons. The series will use more than 15 cameras mounted on helmets and on the bodies of the EOD techs to capture the eight-man team’s five-month tour. Bomb Patrol: Afghanistan is produced by Big Fish Entertainment.
New one-hour series, My Extreme Animal Phobia explores bizarre phobias people have related to animals when it premieres on Animal Planet October 21 at 10p. Dr. Robin Zasio, a psychologist who runs the Anxiety Treatment Center of Sacramento helps patients suffering from extreme phobias triggered by their fears of certain animals or insects. My Extreme Animal Phobia is produced by RelativityREAL for Animal Planet.
Lifetime granted Dance Moms a second season with 13 new episodes showcasing dance instructor Abby Lee Miller, her top-flight students and their mothers at Miller’s dance company in Pittsburgh. During the last four weeks, the docu-series has averaged 1.6 million total viewers and 708,000 among W18-49. The first season finale of Dance Moms airs October 5 at 10p. Collins Avenue produces the series.
A renewal order is on tap for Animal Planet’s series Tanked after airing a six episode first season featuring Wayde King and Brett Raymer’s family-owned custom aquarium business. Animal Planet gave the second season ten episodes scheduled to return in Spring 2012. Casting for the second season is also underway. Tanked is from Nancy Glass Productions.
Beginning mid-October, OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network debuts Super Soul Sunday, a three-hour block on Sunday mornings featuring fresh episodes of Oprah’s Soul Series, a collection of in-depth, intimate interviews conducted by Oprah with fascinating authors, thinkers and spiritual leaders, as well as feature-length documentaries, short-form content from Soul Pancake among other offerings. The theme of Super Soul Sunday is happiness and personal fulfillment, wellness, spirituality and conscious living. The programming block premieres October 16 at 8a.
Cooking Channel serves up a second season of its comedy-themed cooking show Nadia G’s Bitchin’ Kitchen starting November 2 at 10p. Nadia offers up her version of rock n’ roll cooking techniques for both the beginner and experienced at-home cooks.
Come January, the new online network from Prospect Park that will air episodes of All My Children and One Life to Live will be called The Online Network or TOLN. The network will also house first-run entertainment and lifestyle programs and Prospect Park said in the future TOLN will add reality, scripted comedy and drama fare to its lineup.
College is back in session and so is mtvU, MTV’s 24-hour college network, launching a new fall season programming slate:
- Stand In Trey Parker and Matt Stone, creators of South Park and The Book of Mormon are the next guest professors in this ongoing series. Premieres October 3 at 12p.
- My Shot With . . . is back with a pair of new episodes in this student led series where students get the chance to interview world leaders and celebrities. New eps debut November 7.
- Freshman 5 launched this last Monday and the series highlights five aspiring artists who get the chance to jump from college to fame.
- Student Bodies partners with Gatorade for a new season where two teams of students from rival colleges USC and UCLA compete against each other in a fitness challenge. Premiere date TBA.
- Movers & Changers opens with a third season on November 14 and continues to profile young entrepreneurs.
- Professors Strike Back features two professors who field comments from students on their RateMyProfessors.com pages.
Season two of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire opened Sunday at 9p with 2.9 million total viewers, down -8% from 3.2 million viewers compared to last season’s average. Encore airings at 10p and 11p delivered 971,000 and 623,000 viewers, respectively.
New daytime lifestyle program The Chew on ABC Daytime opened Monday with 2.5 million total viewers which did better than All My Children’s (the show it replaced) 2010-2011 season averages with total viewers (2.5 million vs. 2.4 million) and among W18-49 (590,000 vs. 568,000).

Divers and sailors from Washington travel to South Africa in search of fortune in the form of diamonds in Spike TV’s new original series Diamond Divers. Spike TV ordered the 10-episode series from Studio Lambert (Undercover Boss, The Pitch) with production beginning this fall and a planned 2012 premiere. Eli Holzman is the executive producer along with Stephen Lambert, CEO of Studio Lambert. Other executive producers include Duke Straub, Colt Straub and Royal Mallow of American Chainsaws and Liz Bronstein, president of The Lizard Trading Company. Chris Rantamaki, VP/Original Series for Spike TV manages the series for the network.
FOX okayed a half-hour comedy project from Mike Royce titled Little Brother about a man discovering he has a half-brother he never knew who happens to be an ex-con. 20th Century Fox TV, Adelstein Productions and Hat Trick will produce and Royce will be the executive producer with Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements and Hat Trick’s Jimmy Mulville.
As expected, CBS is moving forward with the untitled Rob Schneider comedy with a planned midseason roll out. The multi-camera comedy was sent back to be re-tooled and it centers on confirmed bachelor (Schneider) who marries into a close-knit Mexican family. Cheech Marin and Lupe Ontiveros also star. Schneider also serves as executive producer along with Lew Morton and Eric and Kim Tannenbaum.
Smithsonian Channel is partnering with South African-based Earth Touch to co-produce five hours of wildlife programming. The projects include a three-part one-hour series Speed Kills chronicling everyday action of animals using a high speed “Phantom” camera. The other two hours include the specials Death Beach and Venom Island.
Casting Call: Social video platform, Spreecast is looking for bloggers, on-air personalities, journalists, writers or otherwise opinionated people who want to voice their views and engage with an audience. Spreecast is part YouTube, part Skype with some Twitter and through broadcast, it brings people together in real time. Saturday A18-49 Analysis: ABC led with its weekly college football match on Saturday at 2.3/7 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. ABC’s Saturday Night Football scored at 8p with a 2.3/8 followed by FOX’s double Cops episodes with an average of 1.1/4. The LSU at West Virginia game on ABC held firm in first place at 9p with a 2.6/8 while Crimetime Saturday on CBS moved into the second spot at 1.0/3. ABC was cheered to a clean sweep victory with more college ball during 10p at 2.2/7 and CBS’ season launch of 48 Hours Mystery was next at 1.2/4.

Monday A18-49 Analysis: CBS held onto its top-seated berth Monday at 4.7/11 with the A18-49 demo, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. CBS’ comedies How I Met Your Mother and 2 Broke Girls averaged a #1 during 8p at 4.6/12 followed by ABC’s Dancing with the Stars at #2 with 3.3/9 and FOX’s series launch of Terra Nova was a close third place at 3.1/8. Also at 8p, The CW debuted a new season of Gossip Girl at 0.7/2 which ranked sixth this hour. At 9p, CBS remained at #1 with its sitcoms Two and a Half Men and the season premiere of Mike & Molly with an average of 6.1/14 (Two/Men posted a 7.4/17 at 9p and Mike & Molly’s premiere delivered a 4.8/11 at 930p) while ABC’s Dancing with the Stars stayed put in second place with 3.4/8 and FOX’s Terra Nova was stable in third at 3.1/7. The CW again had a sixth place showing during 9p, this time with the premiere of new series Hart of Dixie at 0.8/2. CBS polished off its final win of the night at 10p with Hawaii Five-O at 3.2/8 with ABC’s Castle next at 2.8/7 and in third place a tie occurred between NBC’s The Playboy Club and Univision’s Don Francisco Presenta at 1.3/3 each.

This Sunday night, Andy Rooney, 92, will present his 1,097th A Few Minutes with Andy Rooney segment on 60 Minutes. It will also be his last. Yes, Rooney is retiring after 62 years with CBS. With that said, CBS News Chairman Jeff Fager issued a statement in which he said if and when the urge should strike, Rooney will always be welcome to come back and file another Few Minutes. Let’s hope it happens often.
Lee Doyle, CEO North America with MEC announced his departure from the agency after 12 years. Lee is taking on new directions within GroupM and WPP and his new position will be revealed in the near future. Charles Courtier, CEO Global for MEC will assume management duties for MEC North America until a new CEO is found.
Just prior to MIPCOM, Sesame Workshop upped Renee Mascara to VP/International Media Distribution. In her new capacity, Renee will increase the Home Video and International Publishing business in addition to managing the Television Sales and Distribution areas for media platforms globally. She will also continue to oversee the organization’s presence at trade shows including DISCOP, MIP-TV, MIPCOM and NATPE.
Former Inside Edition’s Investigative Producer, Cindy Galli lands at ABC News’ working with its investigative team headed by Brian Ross. Cindy was with Inside Edition since 1999.
USA Network elevated Aaron Ford to VP/On-Air Marketing to head the on air marketing group and to oversee all promotional scheduling and planning for USA, Cloo and Universal HD Channels. Based in New York, Aaron reports to Alexandra Shapiro, SVP/Brand Marketing and Digital.
Island Def Jam, a unit of Universal Music Group is teaming with A&R executive and producer, Breyon Prescott to launch his Chameleon Entertainment at the company.
