Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 26, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing. 

Foothill Entertainment steps into a multi-platform development/production deal with Bob’s Space Racers, designer/manufacture of amusement games, to develop TV programming based on the popular Whac-A-Mole arcade game and brand, as both an animated kids’ series and a family-aimed live-action reality/game show.  Under the deal, Foothill Entertainment will serve as Exec Producers on the TV and Internet projects, with Christopher Keenan, President/Creating 4 Kids, signing on to head the development for Foothill. Dimensional Branding Group is Whac-A-Mole’s exclusive global consumer products licensing agent.  Foothill plans to meet with prospective co-production partners at MIPCOM.  Want to feel Whac-A-Old?  Whac-A-Mole made its debut in 1976.

Disney Channel moves forward with its first major global production, by giving the go-ahead for Bunnytown.  Set for production in the UK, Bunnytown is a preschool puppet series about a town of furry creatures, the various roles they play, and lots of music with characters such as Li’l Bad Bunny, Disco Pirate Bunnies, and others.  The series is slated to bow in the UK on November 3, 2007, followed by its US premiere on Disney Channel’s Playhouse Disney, November 10 at 11a, according to Variety.  The Bunnytown characters will begin hopping onto Playhouse Disney in promos and the like from October 8.

Paramount plans to release Transformers 2, a follow-up to this summers live-action movie Transformers, on June 26, 2009, according to Box Office Mojo.  This news comes following Transformers movie director Michael Bay recent comments that Paramount is moving slowly on the project due to the potential writers strike.  As for casting, it is too early to say.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Galleon Entertainment will showcase its newly repositioned multiplatform animated comedy/adventure series Sokator-422 (26×30 min) at MIPCOM 2007.  Targeted to K6-11, the series revolves around a brother and sister earthlings, who arrive on the planet Sokator-442, where ancient forms of soccer are played and used to settle differences.  The two pull together a soccer team of alien misfits to vie against the master teams to protect their world.  The series also has a corresponding interactive website where kids can share soccer skills footage.  Created by Galleon’s Managing Director, Len Dunne and CEO, Stephen Green, Sokator-422 is produced by Zoo Films, with art direction overseen by Copernicus Studios and story edited by Bob Thompson of Good Story Productions.

Puff TV Ltd., an Israel-based preschool iVOD channel, has inked a deal with Nelvana Enterprises for the CGI animated series, The Backyardigans (40 episodes).  A co-production from Nick Jr. and Nelvana, The Backyardigans will join Puff TV’s VOD offerings making it available to Western European territories including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands, as well as to Israel, Hong Kong and Taiwan.  Puff TV recently inked a similar deal with PorchLight Entertainment for the preschool series Jay Jay The Jet Plane.

Thunderbird Films and Daro Film Distribution have teamed to pick up worldwide distribution rights for to projects, one of which is the teen drama Edgemont (70×30 min).  The series, which will be offered at MIPCOM, revolves around lives of a group of suburban high school students.  Edgemont stars Kristen Kreuk (Smallville) and Grace Park (Battlestar Galactica) among others.  Produced by Vancouver’s Omni Film Productions Ltd., the series initially aired in Canada on CBC.

MARKETING/LICENSING

The silk is spinning as Kids’ WB!, Sony Pictures Television and Marvel Studios launch the marketing and promotional effort for the animated The Spectacular Spider-Man TV series, which is scheduled to premiere in spring 2008 on the Kids’ WB’s Saturday morning block on The CW.  The plan, which began in earnest during the Kids’ WB new season premiere weekend last Saturday, with an on-air teaser campaign, which will run until the series launches, and a sweepstakes tie-in with Activision’s new Friend of Foe video game, as well as various other avenues such as:

  • An in-school Milk Media Campaign kicks off in early 2008, reaching 85% of US schools, and including tune-in information on series branded posters and book covers in the top 8-10 markets, and on 40+ million milk cartons.
  • A kid-centric online effort, featuring the series, will be accessible at

  • Sony Home Entertainment will feature a new trailer for the series on its release of Spider-Man 3 DVD, available at Wal-Mart from October 30, 2007.

Taffy Entertainment expands its relationship with Atlantyca Entertainment for the Geronimo Stilton brand.  Under the new pact Atlantyca, the original rights holder for the brand, grants Taffy oversight of most of the worldwide consumer products licensing and promotional rights for the Geronimo Stilton kid’s chapter book series.  Atlantyca continues to manage all licensing in Italy and worldwide publishing for the brand.  Earlier this year the two inked a similar deal for the Stilton animated series.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Ragdoll promotes two, upping Kristin Bufka to Director/Event Marketing and Merchandising, while Matt Schweitzer moves up to Sr. Manager/Media and Merchandising. Both will report to EVP/Global Licensing and Marketing, in the UK.  Based in NY, Bufka will now focus her efforts on event marketing strategies for Teletubbies, as well as overseeing product development and marketing for Ragdoll’s toy and softline licensees.  Prior to this Bufka, who joined the company in 2001, was Sr. Manager/Event Marketing and Promotions.  Schweitzer, who had been Manager in the department, is now responsible for managing Teletubbies licensees in the area of DVD and hardline goods, and for the online strategy for Teletubbies.  This year marks Teletubbies 10th year on TV around the world.

Executive moves at Cookie Jar Entertainment:

  • Joining the production group are Producers, Susie Grondin (Will & Dewitt), Christine Davis (Hurray For Huckle! Busytown Mysteries), Michelle Melanson (World of Quest), and as Post-Production Supervisor, Jane Crust.
  • In the Marketing and Licensing area: Boston-based Lisa Tanzer moves up to SVP and Head of Marketing; Kelly Elwood focuses on Canadian and International Licensing as SVP/International Consumer Products; John Gildea, SVP/Consumer Products US, will head the US Licensing group; and Montreal-based Jean Gauvin becomes Director/Creative Services and Trade Marketing.

Stewart F. Lane, noted Broadway Producer/Director and Tony Award winner, has been appointed to Rogar Studios’ Board of Directors.  Rogar produces the public television series Sheira & Loli’s Dittydoodle Works, and the national tour Dittydoodle Works Pajama Party Live, which launches this fall.  Lane will take a lead role in helping to grow the company as well as working with CEO Cory Rosenberg as Executive Producer of Sheira & Loli’s Dittydoodle Works.  Additionally, Lane and Rosenberg will develop a range of other projects in association with Rogar, such as new stage, TV, movie and internet productions.  Lane is currently President and CEO, Stellar Productions International and Stewart F. Lane Productions.

Paula Kaplan has been appointed EVP/Talent and West Coast GM, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group.  Kaplan, who joined the company in 1993, will continue to head talent and casting across all platforms as well as its other brands The N, Nick at Nite, and Noggin.  She will also expand watch to oversee talent development and music A&R, and be a member of the team establishing Nickelodeon’s music brand and related initiatives, including working with partner Sony Music Label Group on co-developed, produced and financed TV and music projects.  As West Coast GM, Kaplan will represent Nickelodeon within the creative community. Most recently Kaplan served as SVP/Talent.  Congrats to Paula who, by the way is also on the Board of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

MarVista Entertainment named D. Douglas Hill as Controller from his prior position as Controller/Finance at PorchLight Entertainment.  Hill will work on accounting and financial information reporting and budgeting. Sara Rutenberg was named as SVP/Business Affairs.  Formerly EVP/Business Affairs, National Lampoon, she will oversee production and distribution agreements across all media, acquisition agreements and original productions.  Other changes include the promotion of Shannon Humphries to Director/Business Administration.  Reporting to Rutenberg, Humphries will manage contract maintenance and licensee accounts.  She was previously Manager/Accounting.  MarVista also recently brought in Charlie Hwang as Director/Technical Services from Lionsgate Entertainment while Michael Wilson was appointed Manager/Acquisitions.
