Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 24, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Netflix, Inc., signs new individual deals with CBS Television Network and Disney-ABC Television Group that will make their respective current season episodes of a number of shows to be streamed at Netflix.  Specifically of interest for the kid world is that included in the deal with ABC are Disney Channel’s original series Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverly Place and The Suite Life on Deck, the latter of which premieres this Friday on the network.  Wizards of Waverly Place and The Suite Life on Deck can be streamed instantly at Netflix beginning this week, 24 hours after each episode’s initial broadcast.  Hannah Montana will be available online via Netflix beginning this November.  A range of other Disney Channel series episodes will be available beginning 2009.

MORE KIDS STUFF

A second season of Bakugan is in the works from co-production partners Nelvana Enterprises, Spin Master, Sega Toys and TMS Entertainment.  Currently in production, season two of the anime series is titled Bakugan: New Vestroia (26×30) and will be ready for air in spring 2009.  Bakugan currently airs on Cartoon Network (US) and Teletoon (Canada).  Bakugan toys/accessories based on the property are available in the US, Canada, Australia and much of Asia, and set to bow in France and the UK for holiday 2008 and across the rest of Europe in 2009 in tandem with broadcast debuts.

Echo Bridge Entertainment inks a range of international licensing deals for kids and teen series from the Alliance Atlantis catalog, including the teen targeted Degrassi series and Instant Star and several animated kids series.

  • Degrassi Season 7 (23×30) has been acquired by broadcaster Virgin 17 (France), meanwhile Degrassi: The Next Generation season 8 (22×30) is currently in production.
  • Picking up Instant Star season 4 (12 episodes) is Virgin 17 (France) and Mediaset (Italy).
  • Lunar Jim broadcast deals include: ZDF (Germany) taking season 2 (19 episodes); BBC Worldwide in Poland for season 1 and 2 (26 and 19 episodes respectively); ABC Australia picks up season 2 and re-licenses season 1.
  • Re-licensing deals include ABC Australia for Dragon Booster season 1 (39 episodes) and Norway’s TV2 for season 2 (12 episodes) of Adventures of Sinbad.

CBBC picks up a second season of Aardman Animations series Shaun the Sheep (40×7).  Production on the new season is set to begin in early 2009.  Aardman has inked a number of TV deals for the new season including ABC Australia, TF1 (France), WDR (Germany), YLE (Finland), SVT (Sweden), DR (Denmark), Noga (Israel).

9 Story Entertainment heads to Mipcom with the trailer for its new live-action adventure series for kids, Survive This! (f/k/a Survivorman Kids).  Created by 9 Story, Survive This! (13×22) is a YTV (Canada) commission that features a group of teens striving to survive in the wilderness for three weeks with series host Les Stroud, best known as Survivorman, serving as their mentor and judge.

MARKETING/LICENSING

PBS Kids Sprout has entered into a partnership with Pajama Program, a non-profit, to launch The Great Sprout Tuck-In initiative, which underlines the importance of teaching kids and families about giving, in this case new pajamas and new books.  Launching November 24, The Great Sprout Tuck-In includes a series of Public Service Announcements (PSAs) aimed at both preschoolers and their parents/guardians, which introduce the campaign and features Nina from Sprout’s The Good Night Show and the Pajanimals, four puppet characters from the new series produced by The Jim Henson Company and 4Kids Entertainment.  The spots also direct adults to more information and how to donate at SproutOnline.com, where a microsite will be available beginning October 1, ahead of the campaign launch.  Pajanimals bows on Sprout this November.

Some kids across the country will be feeling The Force at home this Saturday, September 27 as Cartoon Network continues its efforts to promote the launch of the new Lucasfilm Animation series Star Wars: The Clone Wars with a one-hour special on October 3, at 9p, on both Cartoon Network and Cartoon Network HD.  Cartoon Network has teamed with House Party, a viral marketer, to host 2,000 in-home viewing parties nationwide.  Each kid selected to host a party will receive a party kit and the first two episodes of the new series to screen for their friends.  If you want to see how those parties go you can check in at www.houseparty.com/starwarstheclonewars, where the party hosts will share the goings on.

Nickelodeon and Sony BMG release the first digital album of the Nick Jr. series Yo Gabba Gabba! on Tuesday, October 14, available exclusively on iTunes.  Additionally, the album will be available day-and-date with the release of the season one DVD release of, Yo Gabba Gabba!: The Dancey Dance Bunch!, which features four new-to-DVD episodes and celebrity appearances.  Season two of Yo Gabba Gabba! kicked off this week with new episodes on Nick Jr. that will be followed by more new episodes beginning October 20.

Majesco Entertainment Company enters into an agreement with Scholastic Interactive, a division of Scholastic Media, to distribute Scholastic’s console and handheld titles in North and South America.  Titles including as part of the agreement include Goosebumps HorrorLand for Wii, PlayStation 2and Nintendo DS, slated for release this October, as well as catalog titles including I Spy Fun House and Animal Genius for Nintendo DS.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment releases Lego Batman: The Videogame.  Based on characters from the DC Comics universe, Lego Batman: The Videogame is developed by TT Games and available for Xbox 360, Playstation3, PlayStation 2, PSP, Wii, Nintendo DS and Windows PC.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Nadia Belhiba is named Director/International Sales, FitzRoy Media.  Belhiba will is responsible for worldwide sales of the company’s slate of kid’s properties, which are available for a range of platforms.  Belhiba was most recently Account Manager/TV, Digital Media & Advertising, Reed Midem.  Belhiba will attend Mipcom next month.

That’s-A-Wrap Productions sings on several top production members in Australia for its upcoming sci-fi action-adventure TV project, Resistance.  Joining the production are:  Toby Pease as Producer/First AD (Steven Spielberg’s Pacific, Charlotte’s Webb, The Matrix trilogy, Scooby Doo and Titanic); Gary Kurtz as Supervising Producer (producer Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and The Dark Crystal); Guy Gross as Composer (Farscape, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert); and Charles ‘Chucky’ Kenway will serve as Concept Illustrator (Babe, Babe: Pig in the City, The Matrix and Mad Max).
