Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 19, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing. 

Arrr me mateys! It is that time O’ the year again, the day that comes but once a year … Aye, today is International Talk Like A Pirate Day.

MTV Networks International has unveiled plans to launch its first pan-European HD service in 2008, which will feature kids and music content from across its Nickelodeon, MTV and VH1 brands.  Specifically looking at kids content, the English-language MTVNI HD service, which is yet to be named, will feature a daily morning programming block of Nickelodeon animated and live action shows, including SpongeBob SquarePants, Avatar, Ren & Stimpy and Drake & Josh.  The new HD service will be operated by MTVNI’s Emerging Markets Group, which will also produce and broadcast channel 24/7 from Warsaw, Poland.  Warsaw is MTVNi’s hub and home its other pan-regional European services and four Polish-language channels.  A launch date is forthcoming.

MORE KIDS STUFF

This week marks the premiere of Sesame Workshop’s weekly Sesame Street five-minute podcast, a free download via www.sesameworkshop.org/podcasts or at iTunes.  Each episode, newly created for the podcast, features segments from current and past episodes of Sesame Street, as well as animated and live-action films.  The first Sesame Street podcast, available now, features the new show segment, What’s the Word on the Street? – in which a word is introduced, defined and reinforced.  Wondering why offer Sesame Street podcasts?  Simple, Sesame Workshop reports that through research it has found that parents want more “portable educational media content” for use with their young kids whenever wherever.

Showcase Entertainment will introduce two kid-targeted series at Mipcom:

  • Hip Hop Harry (26×30′)  a preschool animated series, about a bear named Harry, which features music and dance.  The series airs in the US on Discovery Kids and The Learning Channel.
  • Ape Escape (38×2′)  the animated series is based on Sony’s PlayStation videogame, and is set to air in the US on Nicktoons Network from early 2008.

Taffy Entertainment will be at MIPCOM next month with a slate including two new animated properties:

  • Cosmic Quantum Ray (26×22)  an HD CGI animated comedy/action/adventure series about Robbie, an Earth teen, who is also a member of Team Quantum, a squad of heroes that regularly saves the Universe.  The series is a co-production of Mike Young Productions, Method Films, M6, KIKA/ARD, Europool, Telegael, SKC&C, UTV and Ocean Productions, Inc.
  • Lamimila (65×7′)  an interactive preschool series that follows the adventures of three friends, as guided by two kids off-screen.  The series encourages preschoolers to use their imagination and develop observational skills.  Lamimila is produced by MoonScoop Productions and Characterplan, and is co-produced with Korean broadcaster EBS, France 5 and Mike Young Productions.
  • Taffy will be offering other animated properties including: I Got A Rocket (52 x 11′); MixMaster: King of Cards (39 x 22′); Dive Olly Dive (52 x 11′); SamSam (52 x 7′), which is based on the comic book from Bayard; as well as new seasons of Code Lyoko (97×22′); Pet Alien (52×22′); and ToddWorld (78×11′).

This coming Monday, a new interactive bilingual music platform from Blue Frog Media, Bulla TV, will launch on LATV networks in the U.S.  The first rollout will be in 26 markets, followed by 25-30 more by the end of 2007.  Targeting Hispanic A13-30, the channel brings in music videos from Spanish- and English-speaking Top 40 Billboard artists.  Using Blue Frog Media’s txtv service, the channel is able to offer interactive text messaging aspects.  Bulla TV (noise in Spanish) is available as a branded programming block or an around-the-clock channel and will be distributed by LATV by satellite.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Michael Weiden has been appointed SVP/Advertising Sales, Sorpresa Network.  In his new post, Weiden will head the ad sales team and is charged with increasing ad sales for Sorpresa Network and digital community.  Working out of NYC, he will report to COO, Leonard Firestone.  Weiden previously served as EVP Litton Media Sales and Executive Director/Ad Sales for Si TV.  Additionally, over the course of 15-years Weiden was President/Sales, Fremantle Media, Pearson Television, All American Television and LBS Communications.

Lara Dalch joins Classic Media as Sr. Director/Brand Development & Promotions, North America.  She will oversee multiplatform partnerships and promotions, as well as working with Home Video promotions.  Additionally, Dalch will develop promotional partnerships to support VeggieTales brand.  Dalch, who will work out of NYC, will report to SVP/Marketing, Nicole Blake.  Most recently Dalch was Director/Promotions Marketing, Cartoon Network & Adult Swim.  Previously she held various roles in marketing and promotions for Comedy Central, and at Wizards of the Coast, Inc.

Charlie Foley returns to Animal Planet and Discovery Kids as VP/Development.  Based in NYC, Foley will oversee development efforts across genres, including natural history, pets, animation and general entertainment.  He will report to President and GM, Marjorie Kaplan.  Most recently Foley was with indie production company Evergreen Films.  When he toiled for Animal Planet the first time around he created, wrote and served as one of the network’s executive producers on the special Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real (2005).  Additionally, he has penned, developed and executive produced a range of series and specials.
