Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 18, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.
It’s official. DreamWorks Animation yesterday acquired the library of U.K.-based TV production and licensing company Chapman Entertainment. The deal brings brands Fifi and the Flowertots, Roary the Racing Car, Raa Raa the Noisy Lion and Little Charley Bear into the DreamWorks fold; Chapman TV series will be distributed through DreamWorks’ Animation’s U.K.-based distribution system. DreamWorks is on a roll: last summer the company purchased Classic Media. “We’re pleased to bring such original and imaginative programming into the DreamWorks Animation fold,” said Eric Ellenbogen, co-head of DreamWorks Animation International TV and DreamWorks Classics. Chapman Entertainment was formed in 2002 by Keith Chapman, creator of Bob the Builder.
Cartoon Network is bolstering its Stop Bullying: Speak Up initiative with the premiere of Contest, a new live-action movie that explores themes of trust, forgiveness, loyalty and redemption. The premiere on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 6p, coincides with the start of National Bullying Prevention Month.
On a lighter note, distributor CAKE, and producers Kickstart Produtions and Arc Entertainment are behind a pair of seasonal specials that will air on Cartoon–A Monsterous Holiday and The Naughty List.
Boy meets snake, round two. Nickelodeon green-lighted a 20-ep second season of animated hit Sanjay & Craig. The series drew 3.6 million total viewers for its season one premiere and is averaging 3 million total viewers.
In other Nick news, the network set Sunday, Sept. 22, at 7p for the Dora the Explorer primetime special Dora’s Great Roller Skate Adventure… Julius Jr. The new animated preschool series inspired by the Paul Frank characters will debut Sunday, Sept. 29, at 11a on Nick Jr.
PRODUCTION NOTES
Just in time for Mip Jr., 9 Story Entertainment is trotting out a new slate of programming. In development are the animated preschool-targeted Sonny & Sky, and The 3 Amigonauts, an animated comedy for 6-11-year-olds. New series Numb Chucks, for the 6-11 demo, is about two half-witted woodchuck vigilantes who try to protect their forest friends.
When ABC Family returns with The Fosters in January, the series will have a new guest star. Rosie O’Donnell will appear in three episodes playing a woman who works in the foster care system and becomes a mentor to the Foster family.

Violent video games were back in the spotlight in the wake of the tragic shooting at Washington’s Navy Yard Monday. On Fox & Friends yesterday morning, new host Elisabeth Hasselbeck jumped into the fray. Probed by co-host Brian Kilmeade, Hasselbeck asked, “Is there a link between a certain age group or [demographic] in 20- to 34-year-old men, perhaps, that are playing these video games and their violent actions?” She touched on game registry, noting, “I’m not one to get in there and say, monitor everything, but if this, indeed, is a strong link, right, to mass killings then why aren’t we looking at frequency of purchases per person?”
The Teletubbies have a new home. DHX Media acquired Ragdoll Worldwide from BBC Worldwide and a group including the founder of Ragdoll, Anne Wood, for approximately CAD $28.4 million. The agreement gives DHX 12 series, including popular U.K. show The Adventures of Abney & Teal, BAFTA-winning Dipdap and Brum, plus 365 episodes of Teletubbies, 52 episodes of Teletubbies Everywhere and 100 episodes of In the Night Garden. DHX CEO Michael Donovan said, “These globally recognized brands will be highly complementary to the DHX Media library.”
If you live in NY and noticed an orange glow in the air, you’re not seeing things. The Empire State Building was a-shimmer Monday night to mark the debut of Nickelodeon’s City of Play fitness-themed week. Included are free public events around Battery Park, Union Square Park and Times Square, leading to the Saturday (21) free, ticketed 10th annual Worldwide Day of Play in Prospect Park. The event will include performances by Big Time Rush and Ariana Grande. Once again, the net will suspend programming on all its TV channels from 12p-3p in a bid to get kids to get off the couch.
Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) and Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX) took their time in the spotlight at last week’s Common Sense Media Awards to lobby for their joint “Do Not Track Kids” legislation they plan to reintroduce in Congress. The legislation would extend and update privacy measures for kids and tweens in the digital realm, including an “erase button” that would let children 15 and under delete personal content on social media after they post it. The 9th annual event honored Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) with its Lifetime Achievement Award; Modern Family as best family media; Mark Edwards, superintendent of the Mooresville Graded School District in North Carolina, as educator or the year, and LeVar Burton for his work not only as producer and host of PBS series Reading Rainbow from 1983-2009 but his launch of kids media company RRKidz and work to digitize the show’s entire library in an app.
Aussie pop singer Cody Simpson will perform at Hub Network’s Halloween Bash, Oct. 26.
