Cynopsis: Kids!

09/17/08

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 17, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Alpine Pictures signs Martin Short and Jim Belushi to star in its upcoming animated musical feature film Dorothy of Oz.  Short and Belushi will lend their voices to the Jester and the Lion respectively.  Based on Roger S. Baum’s books and writing, Dorothy of OZ is the first in a series of animated movies from Alpine Pictures, in association with Box Office Productions III.  The movie is being produced by Bonne Radford (Curious George, Road to El Dorado, Balto) and directed by noted director/animator Daniel St. Pierre (Everyone’s Hero, and upcoming Quantum Quest: A Cassini Space Odyssey, and Sheepish).  Roger S. Baum is the great-grandson of L. Frank Baum, author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and other Oz books.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Hit Entertainment brings Chapman Entertainment’s CGI, stop-motion animated series Roary the Racing Car to PBS KIDS Sprout.  Roary the Racing Car will premiere on Sprout on Monday, October 13 and will air during the network’s live morning block, The Sunny Side Up Show (9a-12p), and weekend mornings during the Let’s Go Show.  Roary the Racing Car is narrated by Sam Hornish Jr., a noted open-wheel racer, making his animation and preschool TV debut.  Roary the Racing Car will also be part of Sprout’s VOD offerings in a dedicated Roary folder, from October 10.  Additionally, Roary-themed clips, games, printouts and crafts will be available later this month on SproutOnline.com ( www.sproutonline.com ).

Nickelodeon’s fifth annual Worldwide Day of Play will be held on September 27, 2008, from 12 noon  3p, during which time Nickelodeon Kids and Family Group will go off the year to encourage kids to get up and get active.  This year is the first time that all of the Nickelodeon networks and related websites will go dark for the three hours.  Nickelodeon channels in 10 different countries will take part in the annual event, and Nick is supporting a range of Worldwide Day of Play events during this time across the US and each of the 10 countries.  Nickelodeon will begin the day at 6a with a cartoon and interstitials, the latter featuring the cast of iCarly, Olympic gold medal swimmer Natalie Coughlin and finalists from My Family’s Go Guts!, all focused on getting active and being healthy.  Between 12p-3p those tuning in and logging on will be directed to go out and play until 3p, when programming and health and wellness messaging continues.  Capping off the day Nickelodeon airs the hour-long finale of My Family’s Got Guts at 8p, and the second season debut of iCarly, including a first kiss for Carly, at 9p.

The Jim Henson Company is set to debut two new CGI animated series, Dinosaur Train and The Skrumps, next month at Mipcom Jr.

  • Currently in development, Dinosaur Train (52×11) is a preschool-targeted series about a steam engine that carries a range of dinosaurs from different prehistoric eras.  The series is told through the eyes of Buddy, a preschool-age Tyrannosaurus Rex.
  • The Skrumps is a new series, based on the vinyl characters and books created by artists John Chandler, created by performers using the Henson Digital Puppetry Studio.  The Skrumps is being developed for long-form direct-to-DVD and a TV series also planned.  To launch the brand last year, several videos, including a music videos, and character video blogs were produced and distributed via Yahoo Kids!, followed by an interactive game on Yahoo this spring.
