Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 15, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.
More premieres on Monday night and another competitive night. ABC won the night overall with a very healthy 6.1/17 A18-49 according to Nielsen Media Research, thanks in large part to the premiere of Monday Night Football. The Benefactor kicked off the night and in final national demo ratings, delivered a 2.3/7, followed by MNF: Green Bay at Carolina with a 7.8/21 in primetime. Fear Factor won the 8pm hour with a 4.6/13 for NBC. WB’s season premiere of 7th Heaven delivered a 2.5/7 A18-49 with much stronger turnouts among Teens (4.7/18) as well as women (W18-34 and W18-49 each earned a 3.8/11). Female teens for 7th Heaven again was a huge 7.9/30. North Shore on Fox earned a 2.0/6, up 18% week to week. Football ruled the remainder of the evening, but among those non-sports fans, the premiere of Las Vegas on NBC was #1 with a 4.7/11 and LAX‘s premiere at 10p with a 5.0/13. Renovate My Family (part 2) on Fox earned a 2.6/6 and repeats of Raymond and 2-1/2 Men on CBS earned a 3.5/9. Everwood debuted on the WB at 9p with a 2.0/5 A18-49, but again delivered in the women and teens: 3.7/12 Teens, 6.0/22 Female Teens, 3.4/9 W18-34 and 3.2/8 W18-49.
Oprah kicked off her 19th season by giving away more than 250 Pontiacs. The result was not only giving away cars, but giving Pontiac nearly a 30m commercial within Oprah, which CBS News reports was valued at approx $7.5 million – equal to the cost of the 256 cars Pontiac gifted. The value was also enormous for Oprah. In Nielsen Media Research Metered Markets, the show averaged an overall 10.1/24 HH MM rtg, and was #1 in 52 out of 54 metered markets. That is the highest season premiere for Oprah since the September 3, 1996 episode.
It’s working for Big Brother, and now CBS will do the same for Survivor. The primetime series premieres on Thursday evening. Next Thursday at 2pm, CBS will launch Survivor Live: The Internet Talk Show at 2pm ET, with a second play on Friday at 2pm. The show will be hosted by Richard Hatch and NY Entertainment Tonight correspondent Chris Booker. The Thursday edition will e a look back at last week’s primetime show; and the Friday edition will include the ability for viewers to call in and speak with the ousted Survivor. For more info, check out CBS.com.
