Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 14, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Digital TV broadcaster CSC Media picks up the license for Hop To It Productions‘ kid-targeted dance along TV series Pop It!  CSC Media will air seasons 1 and 2 (52 episodes) of Pop It on two of its kid-centric UK channels Pop and PopGirl.  Pop It! is produced by Hop To It Productions in Canada with support from TVOKids, Access, Knowledge Network, SCN, Nickelodeon Australia & New Zealand, the Canada Media Fund, The Shaw Rocket Fund and The Bell Broadcast and New Media Fund.  Guru Distribution represents the series in the US, France, Portugal and other select markets.

LICENSING and MARKETING

Germany’s m4e Group names Ink, the Copenhagen-based brand licensing company (f/k/a Kidz Entertainment), as the licensing and merchandising agent for Lucky Punch‘s mixed live action and CGI animated series Mia and me.  Under the deal, Ink is responsible for the development of the merchandising program for the TV series across the Nordic, Baltic and CIS territories, and Eastern Europe.  Mia and me is produced by Lucky Punch, which is a joint venture between m4e and Gerhard Hahn, in co-production with Rainbow and March Entertainment as well as m4e, Hahn Film, ZDF German Television Network and Rai Fiction.  International distribution rights for the series are handled by m4e and via its subsidiary Telescreeb and co-production partner Rainbow.  Slated to launch in spring 2012, production on the first season of Mia and me (26 episodes) is set to be completed by the end of 2011, with a second season (26 episodes) already in development.

2K Play, Nickelodeon and the Major League Baseball Players Association and Major League Baseball introduce Nicktoons MLB video game this week for Xbox 360 featuring support for Kinect for Xbox 360, Wii, and Nintendo DS.  The game features a lineup of Nickelodeon’s Nicktoons characters going up against some 300 players from all 30 MLB clubs at a selection of venues including MLB ballparks and some Nicktoons locations too.  Developed by High Voltage Software for consoles and Black Lantern Studios for Nintendo DS, Nicktoons MLB feature various gameplay modes, such as Pick-up Game, Tournament, Showdown and Distance Derby, and features play-by-play commentary by Perch Perkins (the anchorman for the Bikini Bottom News) and the Irken Empire’s robot GIR (of Invader Zim fame).  Specially marked packages of Nicktoons MLB contain exclusive Topps collectible trading cards that showcase both a Nickelodeon character and an MLB player; there are a total of nine cards in the series.  2K Play is a unit of 2K, which is a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software.

Endemol appoints Golden Bear Products as the exclusive Master Toy partner for the preschool property Bananas in Pyjamas in the UK, Ireland, Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Latin America (excluding Brazil).  Golden Bear will begin introducing Bananas in Pyjamas products, including plush and plastic toys (with electronic and mechanical devices), beginning fall 2012.  Produced by Southern Star Entertainment/Southern Star Singapore Production in association with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the new CGI animated Bananas in Pyjamas series will debut on Turner CN Enterprise networks across EMEA this month, and has already premiered recently on ABC2 (Australia), Channel 5 (UK) and Cartoonito (UK).  Other international sales for the new version of the series includes ABS/CBN (Philippines), BBTV (Thailand), Disney Channel (Pan Asia), Discovery Kids and Discovery Familia (Latin America), OKTO Kids (Singapore), RTE (Ireland), TV3 (New Zealand), and TVB Pearl (Hong Kong).

Saban Brands grows the Paul Frank lifestyle brand in Asia this month with the official opening of a flagship store in China at the Joy City Mall in Xidan, Beijing.  Saban Brands, working in partnership with Shanghai Romma, a subsidiary of the Jun Yao Corporation, plan to launch at least 60 additional Paul Frank Stores throughout China over the next five years.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated on Disney Channel beginning tomorrow, Thursday, September 15, with a range of original programming including the premiere of an interstitial series that focuses on family heritage and cultural traditions.

  • Starting tomorrow, Disney Channel and its preschool-aimed Disney Junior block will launch the new interstitial series This Is Me, which features real kids talking about what makes them, and their families, unique, things like the foods they eat and traditions they uphold, and that help define family origins.
  • Disney XD will feature new spots beginning tomorrow that star Ryan Ochoa (Pair of Kings) and Mateo Arias (Kickin It) where they discuss their family traditions and role models.
  • Thursday will also see Disney Junior’s debut of a new episode of Special Agent Oso (12:30p), with guest stars Rita Moreno, Rico Rodriguez and Raini Rodriguez.
  • Handy Manny Great Garage Rescue – a new 45-minute special will premiere on Disney Junior on Monday, October 3 (1p).  The special features guest stars Ed O’Neill (Modern Family), Freddy Rodriguez (Ugly Betty), George Takei (Star Trek) and Harold Perrineau (Lost).  To support the new special, DisneyJunior.com will launch a Handy Manny Great Garage Rescue micro-site that features the new game, Handy Manny’s Fix it Fast Garage, as well as new episode-themed recipes and crafts.

BBC Worldwide heads to Mipcom 2011 next month where it sill showcase nine new format offerings, including some aimed at kids/families and a teen-targeted series including.

  • Project Parent – a CBBC Production targeted to kids/families, the format lets kids take control of their single parents, who are put to the test with quirky challenges as they attempt to change their image and find love.
  • Daddy Daycare – from Love Production, the show follows three men as they care for kids at a busy nursery.  The format is aimed at kids/families.
  • Misfits – a popular format from Clerkenwell Films, which has been acquired in 90+ territories, is available for the first time as a scripted format.  The series features five difficult teens forced to perform community service to pay for their crimes and who turn into superheroes with powers they neither chose nor want.

Channel One News launches its free Channel One News smart phone app, which provides users with access to its daily teen-targeted news content and features, including video segments, headlines, interactive and social media functionality.  Additionally, this week Channel One will launch a daily blog called Right Now ( www.channelone/com/blog ), where the network’s anchors and other contributors will share stores and their personal point of view on various issues concerning its viewers. Channel One News continues its partnership with CBS News Productions to co-produce Channel One’s 12-minute news broadcast.  Channel One News recently entered into a new partnership with Promethean, a global education company, to launch of Channel One News InterActiv, a new “on-demand” classroom content and professional development offering that combines Channel One’s daily content with Promethean’s interactive technology.

Callaway Digital Arts, a developer of interactive kid’s and lifestyle apps, teams with HIT Entertainment to debut the new Angelina Ballerina’s Bubble Pop! game app for iPad/iPhone/iPod touch.  The new Angelina Ballerina’s Bubble Pop! app, available now, features animation, two game play modes (timed and classic) and lots of sound effects and music, as players help Angelina gather flowers by popping bubbles, thus earning points, as they float down.  Callaway and HIT previously joined together on Thomas & Friends and Angelina Ballerina story-based apps.

The new three-DVD box set, Dora the Explorer: Celebrate with Dora, will release this November 15, 2011.  From Nickelodeon Home Entertainment and distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment, Dora the Explorer: Celebrate with Dora (291 minutes) includes Dora’s Christmas!, Dora’s Halloween and Dora’s Big Birthday Adventure.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment releases Goosebumps: Attack of the Mutant and Goosebumps: Ghost Beach DVD titles this week.  The DVDs feature stories based on the kid-targeted stories by scare-master R.L. Stine, published by Scholastic.

Big Idea Entertainment partners with World Vision for the release of the new VeggieTales: The Little Drummer Boy DVD this fall.  The release sees VeggieTales and World Vision, a religious-based organization, come together to promote the annual World Vision Gift Catalog, which provides clean water, animals and other items to families in need around the world.

Coolabi names Natasha Dyson as its new Head of Licensing, overseeing the licensing activities for Coolabi’s portfolio of properties including Poppy Cat, Purple Ronnie and Scarlett & Crimson, Bagpuss, Clangers and Ivor the Engine, which Coolabi represents on behalf of Smallfilms and Peter Firmin.  Dyson was most recently with Chapman Entertainment where she also served as Head of Licensing.  She previously toiled for 19 Entertainment and prior to that at The Beanstalk Group.
