CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

09/14/05

Good morning.  It’s Wednesday, September 14, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

President Bush will address the nation on Thursday at 9pm from Louisiana.  For the networks, that requires a little shifting of programs, including a season premiere.  CBS will air the Survivor premiere on Thursday at 8p as scheduled, but will need to bump the two hour Quentin Tarantino directed CSI finale repeat from 9-11p. That will now air next Wednesday, from 9-11p. And that schedule change means the season premiere of CSI: NY will also be pushed back a week, now set for 9/28. ABC has scheduled a special edition of Primetime on Thursday night at 8pm, an hour-by-hour account of the government’s reaction or inaction to the hurricane disaster.  After the President at 9p, ABC returns with another edition of Primetime exploring the issue of our preparedness in the face of other catastrophic events.  Fox’s second outing of Reunion will be preempted, pushed back into unfriendly territory airing opposite the premieres of CSI and The Apprentice the following Thursday.

Variety reports UPN has switched around its Thursday night lineup – just a week before its premiere date.  Everybody Hates Chris remains at 8p, Love Inc. is now scheduled at 830p, followed by Eve and Cuts at 9p and 930p respectively.  That move gives Love Inc. the coveted and spotlighted time period following the Chris Rock show, which has arguably received more pre-launch buzz than another other new show this season.

Tonight’s Premieres:
Fox:  Head Cases at 9p
USA:  Made in the U.S.A. at 10p* MORE GOOD STUFF *MTV Networks will launch an HDTV channel in January 2006 called MHD. Targeting the 18-34 demo, content will include programming pulled from the MTV Network brands including MTV Unplugged, VH1 Storytellers and CMT Crossroads, as well as the MTV Video Music Awards. MHD will have a particular focus on a broad range of music formats, and in addition to programming from the MTV Networks, it will feature its own acquired and original programming, including concerts, music videos, countdown shows, backstage extras, etc.

i Network, formerly known as Pax TV, will carry CSTV: College Sport Television‘s live college football game/telethon, dubbed Big Game for the Big Easy.  Featured teams are Tulane and Mississippi State, who are scheduled to play on September 17 at 8p.  Funds raised thru the telethon is earmarked to rebuild youth athletic programs and community playing fields in the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Mag Rack and NBC Universal On Demand will ban together to promote the on-demand premiere of The Wedding Date.  Mag Rack will support the promotion with its own original series Wedding Date Do’s, with two hosts from WE: Women’s Entertainment series Bridezillas.  Wedding Date Do’s will be available on Mag Rack starting the day before The Wedding Date’s on-demand premiere, September 29, and continue for four weeks.

Discovery Channel‘s Sunday night September 11th airing of its original movie The Flight that Fought Back drew a 5.1 HH rating from 9-11p, with 7 million homes tuning in. The film aired without commercial interruption.

Verizon has signed a distribution agreement for both GSN, the Network for Games, and GSNi, GSN’s recently launched interactive play-along service.  Verizon will offer GSN on Verizon FiOS TV when it launches later this year, and plans to add GSNi to the lineup in 2006.  When the FiOS TV service launches, it will also offer programming content from A&E, TBS, Discovery Networks, NBC Universal Cable, Showtime and Starz Entertainment Group, among others.

 * NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *Filmore Middle was on the development slate last spring, didn’t find its way onto NBC fall schedule, but has now been picked up for midseason. The NBC Universal Studio production focuses on a down-trodden middle school, its less-than-interested student body, and one lone maverick teacher who wants to make learning interesting and fun again.  Justin Bartha plays the young and idealistic teacher. NBC has ordered six episodes.

Casting NoteTNT is once again looking for “Dramatic Auditions”, that is a nationwide search for the most talented actors in America.  Last year more than 3000 wannabes and hopefuls auditioned, with the ultimate winner receiving $50 grand, an apartment in LA, use of a car for one year, acting lessons and a publicist.  If you are interested in participating in this off-channel talent search, you’ll need to prepare a monologue from one of The New Classics movies on TNT and perform it in front of a panel of judges.  The first open audition will be on October 6 in LA.  For all the info you need, including audition locations and times, what to prepare, contest rules, click here.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *Michael Thornton has been named EVP/Business and Legal Affairs for Buena Vista Television, reporting to Janice Marinelli, President.  Based in Burbank, Michael will help determine the business and strategic direction for the division.  Heading up a team of attorneys and contract administration professionals, he will provide legal oversight for the division’s syndication, Video-On-Demand, Pay-Per-View, Pay TV, and wireless businesses.  His responsibilities will include negotiating licensing deals and strategic partnerships, as well as production, talent and distribution agreements.

COMEDY CENTRAL has announced  two executive promotions: Jim Sharp has been upped to SVP/Original Programming and Development; Elizabeth Porter has been promoted to SVP/Specials and Talent. Both will continue to report to Lauren Corrao, EVP/Original Programming and Development, and are based in LA. Jim oversees all of the network’s west coast original pilots and series. Elizabeth is responsible for all aspects of talent, identifying and developing new talent as well as developing vehicles to draw bigger name talent to the network.

* RATINGS *Monday — A18-49 Analysis:  Among the fast affiliate numbers provided by Nielsen Media Research, ABC dominated on Monday night in the A18-49 category, pulling a 6.6/17 for the night. As always with fast affiliate ratings, the numbers can change once the final numbers are published.  ABC’s Wife Swap led the 8p hour with a 4.2/12.  CBS’ combo repeats of King of Queens and Raymond earned a 2.6/8, while the repeat of Prison Break on Fox delivered a 2.4/7.  The 9-11p average for the Eagles v. Falcons game earned a 7.8/19.  Among the non-sporting group, Prison Break on Fox at 9p averaged a very solid 4.5/11, up from last week’s 9 share.  At 10p CBS’ repeat of CSI: Miami led with a 3.5/9.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1752-Great Britain finally adopts the Gregorian calendar, used in much of Europe since 1582.  Depending on how you look at it, the eleven days immediately preceding this date never existed: after going to bed on the evening of September 2, Britons woke up on September 14.  Britain’s belated calendar reform also formally recognized January 1 as the first day of the year, replacing March 25.
