Cyn opsis: Kids!

09/13/06

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 13, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

The folks at Apple Computers must have been leaning on the send button yesterday, because there are lots of new “I” things for consumers.  Okay, here we go….Apple has launched the new iTunes 7, which is an upgraded and newly outfitted version of its iTunes Store that includes the much anticipated movie downloads offerings.  Initially the store is offering 75 feature film titles from Disney, Pixar, Touchstone Pictures and Miramax Films that can be purchased, downloaded and viewed on computers and iPods.  Movies will be available via iTunes on the same day it is released on DVD, each movie title will sell for $12.99 when pre-ordered and in the first week of availability, and $14.99 thereafter, and library titles cost $9.99. And, Apple has also inked a deal with the NFL that will allow fans to purchase downloads of video highlights of NFL games via iTunes the following the games.  The video highlights can be purchased piecemeal for $1.99 a piece, or fans can sign up for a season pass called Follow Your Team, that will cost $24.99.  Finally, as part of the NFL deal, iTunes will also offer the NFL Network’s show NFL GameDay, ($1.99/per show, $19.99/season).  Add this to all the various iPod hardware updates Apple announced yesterday, and you have yourself quite a an announcement!

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

SupperTime Entertainment and Telescreen BV have entered into a co-production deal to developing, producing and distributing a TV series, home entertainment titles and a licensing program based on the book series, Alien Clones From Outer Space.  Targeted to K6-9, the property is based on Simon & Schuster’s four early reader ‘First Chapter’ books are published by and revolve around ten-year old twins, basically average small town kids, until alien clones take up residence in their attic.  SupperTime and Telescreen will be at MIPCOM with the project.

Cartoon Network is launching a Hispanic Heritage Month campaign to help recruit more Latino kids and adult professionals to Boys & Girls Clubs of America.  The campaign consists of a fully-researched Latino Staff Development Resource Guide for nearly 4,000 Clubs, a Spanish and an English-version PSA to run throughout Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15), and an exclusive contest for BGCA kids to create their own original animated short using Latino themes, customs, holidays and historical figures.

This week we’ve launched a new feature on the Cynopsis website, called Programmers Showcase.  This advertiser-supported page features one network/syndicator/studio’s video(s) of choice to showcase on the Cynopsis website, and will continue to evolve as creativity demands!  At the center of today’s Programmer Showcase is The CW and its upcoming season set to launch September 20.  Check it out – www.cynopsis.com/video_archive.

STONE SOUP

Viacom’s MTV Tr3s has created MTV Tr3s Voces (Voices) in partnership with Youth Venture, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The Sallie Mae Fund and National Council of La Raza (NCLR).  MTV Tr3s VOCES will be an online community created to empower Latinos to get the most out of their education, prepare for high school graduation and explore their higher education options.  The campaign will also provide an interactive, comprehensive informational hub at www.mtv3voces.com where Latino high school students can learn more about what it takes to continue their education.  Hundreds of Latino high school students will receive video cameras to capture their education experiences in their own words and images. The videos they create will then be featured on the website and in communities nationwide on a 50-city bus tour.  MTV Tr3s VOCES will also serve as the Latino student extension of MTV’s think: education campaign.

CORRECTION

A mix-up here at the egg factory yesterday resulted in two items being inadvertently melded together into one confusing item.  The two should have read as follows:

National Geographic Kids Entertainment and King Rollo Films have partnered with the BBC’s CBeebies to co-produce Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies (26×30′ or 52×11′), a mixed live-action/animated preschool series.  Under the co-production deal CBeebies holds the exclusive broadcast rights to the program in the UK and Ireland as well as the license rights for consumer products and home video in these territories.  CBeebies plans to begin airing Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies in fall 2007.  National Geographic Television International (f/k/a Explore International) retains program sales and licensing/home video rights for all remaining worldwide territories.  Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies features a group of baby animal characters, including a cheetah cub, zebra foal, elephant calf, and monkeys who gather with Mama Mirabelle (a maternal elephant) each episode to watch videos of various animals, with Mama there to answer questions.  The live animal/nature footage will come from National Geographic with additional footage provided by the BBC.  King Rollo Films’ Leo Nielsen (Wide Eye, Paz, Maisy) serves as director and producer for the series, which is based on an original concept by Wild Brain animation studio and George Evelyn.

Anime fans are excited to learn that after years of talk and rumors, Gainax will produce four new Neon Genesis Evangelion movies, the series is being called Rebirth of Evangelion parts 1, 2 and 3 and the final movie the Conclusion.  Part 1 is scheduled for release in summer 2007, followed in early 2008 by part 2, and in a double feature part 3 and the Conclusion currently slated for early summer 2008.  Evangelion is an adventure/sci-fi/action story that is not for younger kids.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

As part of a strategy to better reach its audience across multiple platforms, Corus Entertainment Inc. has put a new management and organizational structure in place for its TV and content units by creating two new groups, one focused on the kids and the other a lifestyle/drama/movie group,.  Corus says that 83 jobs will be eliminated as a result of the re-organization. The new structure is expected to be in place by January 2007.  Under the re-organization:
