Good Morning.  It’s Wednesday, September 12, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing. 

Total ad dollars for the first half of 2007 was down from last year by 0.3% with a total of $72.6 billion, according to a report from TNS Media Intelligence, marking the first decline of two consecutive quarters since 2001.  TNS attributes the decrease largely to the automotive sector (GM ad spending alone was down by more than 25% and $100 million). Internet spending was up by 17.7% and now accounting for 7.6% of the total media buy, up more than a point from last year. TV was down by 2.4% (cable being the only area that saw an increase year to year of 2.8%), but TV still accounts for a third of the total media ad dollars spent. Top three ad categories across all media – financial services ($4.49 billion), telecom ($4.46 billion) and local services & amusements ($4.36 billion).

The Weather Channel will delve further into original hi-def programming as the second season of Epic Conditions will return to the schedule accompanied by a second series Weatherventures. Both will debut October 1, airing each weeknight from 7-8p and again at 11p-12a. Epic Conditions, produced by Warren Miller Productions, opens the hour at 7p and recounts when the weather cooperates to allow great sports moments. New series Weatherventures will explore iconic landscapes in America such as the Florida Everglades, Colorado Rockies and Grand Canyon among others and how weather has altered them, people have been impacted by them and how nature has adapted to them. Airing at 730p, this series is hosted by TWC meteorologist Jeff Mielcarz and is produced by Horizon Entertainment.

Broadcast Evening News Re-Cap: During the first week of September, NBC’s Nightly News appears to be catching up to ABC’s World News, even though ABC remained on top with total viewers and A25-54 (000) for another week. Here are the results for the week of September 3, 2007:
ABC: 7.81 million total viewers; 1.9/8 and 2.40 million A25-54
NBC: 7.78 million total viewers; 1.9/8 and 2.30 million A25-54
CBS: 5.46 million total viewers; 1.4/6 and 1.77 million A25-54

DIRECTV’s weekly half-hour original series Project MyWorld takes its second season to New Zealand and Australia starting October 1 at 6p with an encore airing at 9p on the satellite TV service provider’s original entertainment channel, The 101. During season two, a new “adventure girl” joins the other two as all three travel in search of love, adventure and the top independent bands through their MySpace connections. All three also contribute to the show’s website on MySpace at

The Closer’s closer episodes Monday night (9p) on TNT drew in 9.2 million total viewers and 6.8 million households, moving the bar up as ad-supported cable’s biggest Live + Same Day audience ever for a single series telecast. The Closer will return for a two-hour special in December and season four will premiere next summer on TNT.

ESPN posted its highest ratings of the year thus far and the second and third-largest household audiences on cable for the 2007 double-header season premiere of Monday Night Football. The Cincinnati Bengals winning match over the Baltimore Ravens at 7p scored an 8.6 rating, which represents an average of 8.3 million households or 11.08 million total viewers. The second game at 1030p where the San Francisco 49ers routed the Arizona Cardinals drew in a 6.9 rating, which represents an average of 6.6 million households or 8.5 million total viewers.

The case before the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia – the infamous Wardrobe Malfunction case – can be caught in part beginning tonight at 8p on C-SPAN 2.  The network will replay the audio of yesterday’s opening arguments, and it can also be heard on C-Span’s website. Why didn’t it run yesterday?  Because the court won’t be able to get the audio file to C-Span until sometime today.

The debut on Sunday night of HBO‘s Tell Me You Love Me at 9p averaged just 910,000 viewers, tho increased the viewership by some 25% from its lead-in (repeat episode of Sopranos).   Immediately following the debut was the premiere of this seasons Curb Your Enthusiasm at 10p which increased the audience yet again to 1.2 million viewers, down from last season’s debut to 1.6 million viewers.

U.S. filmmaker Bradley Cox‘s latest documentary is making him popular in Cambodia, but not in a good way.  The Plastic Killers ( spotlights a Cambodian murder case strong with political tie-ins in which two innocent men received life sentences for murdering popular union leader, Chea Vichea.  The government has deemed the film illegal with threats to ban the short-form version.  More info tomorrow in Bradley’s interview with Cynopsis: Weekender.

Veteran media and studio executive Saul I. Fruchthendler has died. During his long and varied career, Saul served as GM for Zephyr Media Group’s West Coast office. Funeral plans will be forthcoming.

Lifetime has signed up for a new project with former Doublemint Twins, Nicole and Natalie Garza for a new comedy project.  You may also remember the twins from Oxygen’s Campus Ladies.

Still deep in project pick-up mode, NBC has ordered up a drama project called Blue Blood from director Brett Ratner, RAT Entertainment and 20th Century Fox Television.  The story focuses on a rookie cop and his first year on the job with the NYPD.


The global interactive marketing and digital agency Digitas hired Todd Stanley as SVP/Marketing. Todd will lead the company’s digital marketing initiatives on behalf of its clients. He will report to Joanne Zaiac, President of the New York office.

The Nielsen Company promoted three top senior executives in its television ratings service, all effective October 1:

  • Catherine Herkovic advances to SVP/Managing Director, National Television Client Services to manage client services and sales for the company’s national television ratings units and will handle broadcast and cable network, advertising agency and syndication clients. She will continue to report to Sara Erichson, EVP/Nielsen Media Research Client Services North America.
  • Kevin Svenningsen moves to SVP/Managing Director, Local Television Client Services to head Nielsen’s local TV ratings service and the point person for client services and sales to television station and cable system clients. He, too, will continue to report to Sara Erichson.
  • Tom Ziangas becomes SVP/Nielsen Sports to supervise the creation of new products, sales, client service and business strategy for television sports measurement. He will report to Terrie Brennan, SVP/News Business Development and Strategy.

offered John Flock a new contract to remain as President of the company and extended his duties as COO and appointed him to the company’s Board of Directors.

ReelzChannel added Jordan Beck as VP/On-Air Promotion and Doug Chalfant as Director/Creative Marketing Solutions. Jordan will handle daily production in the network’s on-air promotion department and create launch strategies for new shows. Doug will focus on cross-platform, branded entertainment initiatives to support the network’s Ad Sales Department. He will also spearhead the development and implementation of integrated brand partnerships with advertisers.

Phyllis Schwartz will become EVP/News, Promotion and Original Content for NBC Universal Television Stations. She was previously GM at KNSD/San Diego. In her new role, Phyllis will oversee local content efforts for the 10 NBCU O&O stations that cover news, digital, original programming and on-air promotion. She will continue to be based in San Diego. Additionally, Steve Schwaid was named to the new position of SVP/Strategic Growth Initiatives. Both executives will report to John Wallace, President, NBC Universal Television Stations.

ABC News appointed Chris Bury as National Correspondent. The long-time Nightline correspondent will be based in Chicago and report across the U.S. for all ABC News broadcasts and platforms including Nightline.

Petry Media Corporation selected David Reinbach to be Corporate Head/Direct Response. Based in New York, David will supervise a team of salespeople focused on selling the television and online properties represented by Blair Television, Petry Television, Petry International and Digerati iSales.

Melissa Dunst was upgraded to Senior Producer at CNN Productions, the network’s documentary division. Based in New York, Melissa’s production slate includes projects for CNN Presents and Special Investigations Unit.

Monday – A18-49 Analysis:  CBS led a clean sweep Monday night with a 2.9/8 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. At 8p the rerun comedies How I Met Your Mother and Old Christine averaged a 2.5/7; at 9p more repeat comedies – Two and a Half Men/Rules of Engagement averaged a winning 3.4/9. Then at 10p, CBS’ CSI: Miami encore delivered a 2.8/7.
