Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 10, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Sorpresa, Juniper Content Corporations Spanish-language network aimed at Kids/teens 2-17, will launch on cable operator Bright House Networks in Tampa, Florida on September 15.  The cable op is adding Sorpresa to its Hispanic package, Buestros canales.

Disney Channel presents Night of Premieres on Friday, September 12 from 7:55-10p.  The evening kicks off with the debut of a new episode of the short-form series As the Bell Rings (7:55p), followed by new episodes of Wizards of Waverly Place (8p), Phineas and Ferb (8:30p), the interstitial The Suite Life on Deck (8:55p), Cory in the House (9p).  Concluding the evening is the world premiere of Emily Osment’s (Hannah Montana) music video Once Upon a Dream (9:55p), from the upcoming Sleeping Beauty: 50the Anniversary Platinum Edition Blu-ray and DVD release.

Nickelodeon premiers its new primetime extreme game series My Family’s Got Guts next Monday, September 15, at 8p.  Hosted by Ben Lyons (co-host of at The Movies and E! Network’s film critic) with co-host Australia’s Asha Kuerten and produced by Worldwide Biggies, My Family’s Got Guts will air regularly weeknights at 8p from September 15-26.  The 1-hour finale will debut on Nickelodeon’s Annual Worldwide Day of Play on Saturday, September 27, at 8p.

qubo Channel announces it will premiere the new CGI animated series Turbo Dogs on Saturday, October 5 at 9:30a, with several repeats throughout the day.  The Turbo Dogs debut on qubo Channel follows its previously announced premieres on: Ion Television on Friday, October 3, where it will air regularly on Fridays at 3:30p; on qubo on NBC, Saturday, October 4 and Saturdays thereafter at 12 noon; in Spanish on Telemundo on also on October 4 and Saturdays thereafter at 8a. Based on the Racer Dogs picture book by Bob Kolar, Turbo Dogs is provided by Scholastic Media and co-produced by CCI Entertainment and HuHu Studios.

This fall in the UK, Five plans to premiere two new holiday special (harvest and Christmas) based on the preschool animated series Little Princess on the network’s Milkshake! block. Noted British actor/performer Brian Blessed joins the voice-over cast as Great Uncle Walter in the special A Merry Little Christmas.  The Harvest Festival special is set to air on Five’s Milkshake on Saturday, November 1 at 7:30a, with A Merry Little Christmas set for later in the year.  Additionally, a new line of Little Princess toys, Born to Play, will be available in the UK beginning this month. Based on the kid’s picture books by Tony Ross, Little Princess airs Saturdays/Sundays on Five’s Milkshake at 7:10a.

4Kids Entertainment heads to Mipcom next month where it will showcase its new fantasy/adventure series, Chaotic: M’Arrillian Invasion (26×30).  The series will air here in the US on TheCW4Kids and Jetix, and on international broadcast partners including: Teletoon (Canada); Ten Network (Australia); Jetix Latin America; RTBF (Belgium); Canal+ Cyfrowy (Poland); SIC (Portugal); Children’s Channel (Israel); MNet (South Africa); ABS-CBN (Philippines); and Kids Central (Singapore).

Fitzroy Media plans to debut its new kid/tween 9-14 targeted multimedia property BidZerk at Mipcom next month.  Described as an ‘auction game,’ BidZerk combines aspects of online auctions and game shows that can be played across web portals and wireless networks and an interactive game board, with a live studio audience.

Chorion inks two new broadcast deals for a new Noddy In Toyland (52×11) CGI animated series with Five in the UK and France 5.  Currently in production Noddy In Toyland will debut respectively in spring and summer 2009 on Five’s preschool block, Milkshake! on Five, and on Les ZouZous on France 5.  Based on author Enid Blyton’s book, the new Noddy series is being animated by Brown Bag Films with Ian Carney (Shaun the Sheep and Chop Socky Chooks) serving as head writer.  Also, Noddy will turn 60 in 2009 so look out for a new consumer and retail marketing campaign to tie into the debut of the new series as well as a new line of Noddy toys.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Universal Studios Home Entertainment releases Barbie & The Diamond Castle, the new CGI animated direct to DVD movie, this week.  Nickelodeon provided a sneak peek of the movie on Sunday.  The DVD drops a week after the CD soundtrack release for the movie, both of which feature Katharine McPhee performing the song Connected.  Additionally, Mattel releases new movie tie-in princess dolls, muse dolls, a horse-drawn carriage and Glimmer the Flying Horse, as well as accessories and playsets, among other toys, that coincide with the debut of the DVD and CD.

Glu Mobile enters into an agreement with DreamWorks Animation SKG to develop and publish a mobile game based on DreamWorks’ upcoming feature film Monsters vs. Aliens.  The new mobile game will be debut in conjunction with the March 2009 release of Monsters vs. Aliens.  This is the second deal between Glu and DreamWorks, under the first pact Glu is finishing up work on a mobile game for Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, which launches globally in conjunction with the US premiere of the movie on November 7, 2008.

Namco Networks launches four new mobile Scene It? TV puzzle types, which are available for download in the weekly Miniseries question packs.  Scene It? TV is based on ScreenLife’s DVD board game. 

GoochiCoo, a baby and toddler property, enters into a license deal with Kiss HK (which stands for Keep It Simple), a designer/manufacturer of wooden toys, to produce GoochiCoo branded toys.  The initial line will be previewed in Hong Kong later this month, with the first products to be available in the UK for spring 2009.  Bulldog Licensing licenses GoochiCoo in the UK.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Ralf Kies is named Director/Licensing & Merchandising, Baby Networks Ltd., which operates BabyTV.  Kies, who was most recently Director/International Licensing 4Kids Entertainment, will oversee off-air strategic commercial development of the BabyTV brand across home entertainment, licensing and merchandising, FMCG promotions and retail partnerships around the world.  He will also develop broadcast partnerships for Baby Networks Ltd. programming through international syndication.  Part of Newscorps’ Fox International Channels, BabyTV is currently seen around the world on 150 platforms.

RATINGS

Sunday, September 7 marked Cartoon Network’s best single day performance for 2008 so far, among K6-11 2.8.  The network’s Thursday night Har Har Tharsday’s block (7:30-10p) saw on September 4, delivered increases versus the same time last year with K6-11 up by +49%, Tweens 9-14 +94% and K2-11 up by + 39%.
