Cynopsis: Kids!
10.09.13

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 9, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.

TODAY’S TOP NEWS

Another great kids book series is headed for the small screen. Scholastic Media and Sprout are creating the animated interplanetary adventure Astroblast!, aimed at kids 2-5. The series, inspired by Scholastic’s Bob Kolar book about a crew of space animals who run a super-cool space station, will debut in summer 2014. It’s the first new Scholastic book-to-TV series to bow in three years, since the debut of Word Girl for PBS. “I’m delighted to be producing for Sprout. They have a brand that is very strong and is compatible with Scholastic’s core values,” Scholastic president Deborah Forte tells CynKids from MIPCOM. Forte says the series is rife with “story-telling and comedy that’s really appealing to kids and the basic themes of kindness, character and community in an environment that feels fresh.” Fans can expect lots of brand extensions. “We only do franchises, and we build them to endure,” Forte says. With television as “the emotional glue” for the show, she says Astroblast content will appear across multiple platforms and consumer segments. “Brands are really driving engagement in the digital ecosystem and so we have to make sure the emotional connectivity is there through the television.”

PROGRAMMING PICKS

The first-ever Disney XD Canadian Original Movie, zombie comedy Bunks, debuts Sunday, Oct. 27, at 8p. The story follows two troublemaking brothers who accidentally unleash a curse on their camp that brings every campfire story to life. Bunks stars Dylan Schmid (Once Upon A Time) and Aidan Shipley (Flashpoint), and was created by Tom McGillis and Jennifer Pertsch, and directed by Tibor Takacs (The Gate, The Gate II: Trespassers). The apocalyptic action continues at DisneyXD.ca, where fans can play new zombie-themed game Brain Freeze beginning Oct. 15.

It’s not every show creator that appears in a tune-in message for a series premiere. But we love that Rebecca Sugar (Adventure Time) stepped out from behind the camera to talk up her new Cartoon Net series Steven Universe. Loosely based on her younger brother, the show premiere Monday, Nov. 4, at 8p. – and follows the misadventures of the “little brother” of a team of magical guardians of humanity-the Crystal Gems. Steven Universe is created by Sugar, with Ian Jones-Quartey (The Venture Bros., Adventure Time) serving as supervising director and featuring voices talent including Zach Callison (Steven), Estelle, Deedee Magno Hall and Sinbad.

Ludorum preschool series Chuggington begins its fourth season on Disney Junior on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 7p with its first primetime special–Chug Patrol: Ready To Rescue. The half-hour special follows trainee Wilson, as he becomes a member of Chug Patrol, Chuggington’s rescue squad, and introduces a new character.

Marine wildlife series Ocean Mysteries with Jeff Corwin is back on ABC affiliates for season three. The series, created in partnership with Georgia Aquarium and Litton Entertainment, focuses on conservation issues, began airing Saturday, Oct. 5.

PRODUCTION NOTES

Elmo and Cookie are crossing the pond. Sesame Workshop is joining forces for the first time with CBeebies to create The Furchester, set to debut in the U.K. in Q4 2014. The Furchester is about a close-knit family of cheerfully incompetent monsters who own and operate an “almost” world-class hotel. Headed into production early next year, the series aims to promote and build creative problem solving skills for its young viewers. Tony Reed and Alison Stewart are exec producers for CBeebies and Carol-Lynn Parente is the executive producer for Sesame Workshop. Belinda Ward is headwriter for the series

Just like the big kids… Production is under way on Disney Junior‘s first Original Movie, Lucky Duck. The music-laden animated sea adventure is being voiced by Christian Borle and Megan Hilty (both of Smash), and Tom Cavanaugh (Royal Pains). Plot follows a plucky rubber ducky who accidentally gets tossed from a cargo ship, ventures off to find the perfect home and meets a gaggle of misfit tub toys along the way. Sounds like a little Nemo, a little Rudolf to us. Lucky Duck is directed by Don Kim (The Adventures of Chuck and Friends) and written by Michael G. Stern (Imagination Movers). Exec producers are Nelvana Studio’s Irene Weibel and Colin Bohm (Mike the Knight), and Rick Garcia and William Malpede (Rango) are composing.

Sprout is starting production on new original series Floogals. The Floogals is an 11-minute mix of CGI and live-action, co-produced by Sprout and The Foundation and distributed by Zodiak Kids. It follows the adventures of three diminutive aliens who land on earth and move in with a family to find out everything they can about human interactions. Series premiere on Sprout is slated for 2015.

Sonic the Hedgehog is headed back to a television near you. Sega’s iconic video game character, already star of 70-plus video games and four series, next fall will return to TV on Cartoon Network in his first CG animated comedy, Sonic Boom (working title). The show, co-produced by Sega of America and Genao Productions, centers on Sonic, his sidekick Tails, and their search for adventure.

Shaftesbury is partnering with actor, writer and producer Laura Vandervoort (Bitten, Smallville) on Super Duper Deelia, a new series created by Vandervoort and targeted to girls ages 6-12. Produced by Shaftesbury in association with John May and Suzanne Bolch of Heroic Television, the half-hour live action series follows the adventures of a young girl who discovers she has superpowers on her 10th birthday.

New series Digby Dragon heads into production in early 2014 at Blue-Zoo Productions in the U.K. Aardman Animations has taken on international TV, DVD and digital sales representation for the CGI show, which follows a fledgling dragon learning to fly. Nickelodeon U.K. already has commissioned 26 half-hours of the show, and Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products will also represent consumer products for the property in the UK and Ireland.

MORE KIDS NEWS

It’s the digital age, Charlie Brown. Peanuts Worldwide, in partnership with Normaal Animation and Televisions, is creating 500 new animated shorts based on the Peanuts comic strip and characters by Charles M. Schulz. The 90-second shorts, available for global distribution next fall, are part of a strategy to build content and buzz for the new Peanuts feature film from Twentieth Century Fox/Blue Sky Studios and set for global release in November 2015. The shorts will premiere on France 3 as interstitials.

Distribution360, a marblemedia company with a focus on sales to both traditional and emerging platforms, signed a first-look deal with Skywriter Media & Entertainment Group on all new kids and family series, plus Skywriter Distribution’s wholly owned and represented library of titles. The deal adds more than 250 half-hours of existing properties and new titles to D360’s portfolio. Recent Skywriter titles include Atomic Betty, Miss BG and iconic hits such as The Raccoons.

Nolan Gould (Modern Family) and Zachary Gordon (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) joined the list of presenters for Hub Network’s Halloween Bash on Oct. 26. Additionally, teen-girl pop group Fifth Harmony will perform at the event.

Disney Consumer Products is rolling out toys and plus to complement its Disney Princess Palace Pets iOS app, which launched in June. The Palace Pets were first introduced via the Disney Princess Palace Pets iOS app, which topped 1 million downloads in its first seven weeks out.

Call for Submissions: Cynopsis is producing its annual Holiday Programming Guide, which comes out on November 26 and will be sent to all Cynopsis and Cynopsis Kids subscribers. If your network has holiday-themed programming airing from November 27 through December 31, please send your listings to Lynn Leahey at [email protected] no later than Monday November 18. Please include the following information: type of program (i.e. series, special, documentary, movie or holiday-themed episode), title, dates and times of all airings (please indicate when the show first premieres and when subsequent encores will air). A confirmation email will be sent following each submission from Lynn (if you don’t receive a confirmation email, please resubmit).

DIGITAL UPDATE

Annoying Orange creator Dane Boedigheimer and his cohorts at Collective Digital Studio are developing new shows for the Annoying Orange YouTube channel aimed at kids 8-12. First up is animated The Misfortune of Being Ned, launching today. Another animated series, Gusto Rules, will follow in January. The channel, which currently has a subscriber base of 3.3 million, will feature a programming schedule similar to those seen on network television with shows airing on a regular cycle and will include comprehensive marketing support.

The family-friendly music video portal envisioned when Disney struck a deal with Vevo back in February is coming to fruition. According to Billboard, Disney Interactive, Hollywood Records, Radio Disney and Vevo are joining forces to launch a music portal on Disney.com and across Vevo’s digital platforms. The site reportedly will gather Disney-curated clips from Vevo’s catalog of 50,000 music videos, including pop acts Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and One Direction, plus exclusive Disney content.

Disney Parks is kicking off its own Vine feed with a competition asking fans of the happiest place on earth to Vine Your Disney Side. Disney began posting submissions Monday (7). The Mouse House will also select a pro Viner from the entrants to produce a series of Vine videos for a $10,000 commission. Disney Parks already has pulled in almost 12,000 followers and numerous content submissions with the tag #DisneySide.
