Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 8, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Studio B Productions inks a development deal with Teletoon (Canada) for the new tween-targeted animated series High Drama High.  Created by Jillianne Reinseth and Jennifer Daley, High Drama High follows the lives of two freshmen, Jessica and Ben, as they try to work their way to the top rung of the high school social ladder.

Fresh TV Inc. and Blueprint Entertainment are partnering to co-produce the new tween-targeted series In Maya’s Opinion.  A live-action series that features CG animated elements, In Maya’s Opinion focuses on the life of 14-year-old Maya (as in every good, bad and embarrassing moment) through her hyperactive imaginative point of view.  Slated to begin production in April 2009, the series is currently in development with Corus Entertainment’s YTV (Canada).  Blueprint’s Oasis International is handling international distribution for the series.

marblemedia is developing a new K6-9 aimed animated series Gnasty Gnomes, based on author R.L. Stine‘s book of the same name.  marblemedia will be at Mipcom next week offering information about this and many of their other properties.

British comedian Matt Lucas joins the star-studded voice cast of the CG animated movie Astro Boy, from Imagi Studios.  Distributed worldwide by Summit Entertainment (except in Japan, Hong Kong and China where Imagi will do the honors), Astro Boy is set for release a year from now on October 23, 2009.

Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, gets its queens, as Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter are cast as the White Queen and Red Queen (“Off with their heads!”), respectively, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  Directed by Tim Burton, the new movie adaptation of Alice in Wonderland already stars Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter and Mia Wasikowska as Alice.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Citytv (Canada) picks up a second season of 13 episodes of the offbeat comedy Less Than Kind from Breakthrough Films & Television and Buffalo Gal Pictures.  The first season is scheduled to premiere on Citytv this fall.  The series revolves around Sheldon, a 15-year-old genius trying to survive the hideous teen years and his dysfunctional family.  Produced by Breakthrough Films & Television and Buffalo Gal Pictures in association with Citytv, sales and distribution for the series will be handled by Breakthrough Entertainment.  Breakthrough will showcase the series at Mipcom.

Decode Enterprises acquires the worldwide TV, DVD and consumer products rights Adastra Creative‘s live-action series, Grandpa In My Pocket (26×12).  Currently in production for CBeebies, the preschool-targeted comedy focuses on the relationship between an imaginative seven-year-old boy and his adventurous and energetic granddad.  Decode plans to launch the new series to international partners next year.  Adastra Creative is an indie production company formed by Mellie Buse and Jan Page; their writing credits include Charlie and Lola, The Hoobs, Angelina Ballerina and Little Robots among others.

The Fremantle Corporation will offer animated preschool-aimed series Power Force (26×30 or 52×15) at Mipcom.  Produced by ABS Productions, the series follows the adventures of six magical aliens (a captain, a scientist, a time-traveling history buff, a musician, and farmer twins) as they go in search of knowledge, peace and fun.

Foothill Entertainment will show-off the new look of the Whac-A-Mole arcade game at Mipcom next week.  Foothill is developing a series of multiplatform projects based on Whac-A-Mole, including an animated series for TV and the web, which they will share at the market, as well as a live-action game family game show.  This is in addition to featuring the previously announced acquisition My Momtourage & Me.

RAI (Italy) acquires the teen-targeted sci-fi/adventure series Grand Star (26×30) from Canadian producer CarpeDiem.  Based on the novels by French writer Georges J. Arnaud, Grand Star is a co-production between CarpeDiem Film and TV and Galafilm (Canada), Stephan Films (France), and Stromboli Pictures (Belgium).  The deal was brokered through Park Entertainment and GA&A, Rome.  Grand Star has already aired on CHUM TV (Canada) and France 2 (France).

Imira Entertainment and Normaal Animation have inked several pre-sales for the K6-12-targeted animated series Tangerine & COw (78×7) ahead of Mipcom.  Picking up the set of Tangerine & COw episodes are YLE (Finland), Canal+ (Poland), RTBF (Belgium), TSR (Switzerland) and HBO Asia.  France 3 has just commissioned a second season of the series.  Tangerine & Cow is based on author Jacques Azam’s comic book Chico Mandarine, which is published by editions Milan.  Imira holds the worldwide TV distribution and licensing and merchandising rights for the series, except for French speaking Europe, Netherlands and Finland that are held by Normaal.  Imira will also offer two new animated series at Mipcom: Sandra the Fairytale Detective (52×12) – a HD, flash-animated series for K4-8, co-produced with TVE and DQ Entertainment; Saari – a music-based preschool animated series that follows the adventures of a creative group of friends on an island, which is co-produced with Stor Fisk (Barcelona).

In another pre-market deal, RTL2 (Germany) acquires the TV and multimedia rights to the HD animated TV series Red Caps (26×26), which is a co-production between Cartoon One (Italy) and Epdem ZOT (Finland).  Series production will be completed in February 2009, simultaneous to the completion of a series of books, an online community and games, board games and a 3D Red Caps feature Film titled The Magic Crystal.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Cartoon Network has teamed up with LEGO for a fall multi-platform sponsorship supporting LEGO’s new Bionicle line of toys.  The promotion features a  new Bionicle on-air music video (90 seconds), bowing on October 17 during the network’s new Friday night action block, and an exclusive online game at CartoonNetwork.com.  The three levels of the new game will debut online over the course of three weeks, with the first unveiled this week.

WizKids, a division of Topps, is set to release the new Star Wars PocketModel trading card game (TCG), Clone Wars: Tactics on November 12.  The TRC debut coincides with Warner Home Video’s release of Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie on DVD.

Kidz Bop continues on its second annual Be A Kidz Bop Star talent search as the field narrows to 15 semi-finalists from about 2,800 entries.  To get to the final four winners Kidz Bop is asking kids to log on and vote for their favorites at www.kidzbop.com.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Dr. Alice Wilder is appointed Chief Content Officer, Kidos.  Wilder will help research and design the core Kidos interface for kids 3-7, as well as produce custom educational and entertainment content across subjects including science, culture and foreign languages.  Wilder helped lead the research team on the preschool series Blue’s Clues as well as Super Why!, the latter of which she was a co-creator.
