Good morning, it’s Wednesday, October 8, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

U.S. online ad spending continued to slow its growth during the first half of 2008 according to new data from the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) put together in conjunction with PricewaterhouseCoopers. Spending grew 15% to $11.5 billion in the U.S., down significantly from a 27% increase recorded during the first half of 2007. Search advertising, dominated by Google, not only remained the biggest sector but actually increased its share of the market, responsible for 44% of all online ad spending compared to 41% during the first half of ’07.


NBC Universal Digital Studio unveiled its first slate of original productions created by some A-list producers and show runners including Tom Fontana (Oz, Homicide) Scott Z. Burns (The Bourne Ultimatum), and John August (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Big Fish.) The shows, which are currently seeking sponsors for distribution across multiple NBCU and third party properties including online, mobile, VOD and digital sell through, were put together in partnership with new media-focused 60Frames, which financed and produced a number of the shows:

  • In Men With Guns: The Assassins (Tom Fontana) a virtuous assassin targets villains of society including fraudulent politicians, dirty cops and compromised businessmen
  • The Remnants (John August) is a comedic story of a group of friends who find out they are the last living inhabitants in a post “something” Los Angeles
  • Love At First Sight & Other Dangers (Scott Burns) is a series of modern-day vignettes that demonstrate how love can be comedic, dramatic and surreal
  • Loving Larry revolves around a fake Bachelor-style reality show in which a phony casting call ends up attracting a team of gorgeous wannabes
  • In Mr. Miss Teen U.S.A. an inexperienced, yet more than willing 18 year-old wins a sexual discrimination lawsuit, allowing him to enter the Miss Teen USA Pageant
  • Four Corners is an Amazing Race-type format with a digital component as teams can enlisting the help of virtual teammates who have signed up online
  • True Story is a documentary series featuring eccentric individuals and their unconventional lifestyles

Look for coverage of the World Baseball Classic next year across a full range of ESPN platforms including ESPN, ESPN HD, ESPN2, ESPN2 HD, ESPN Deportes, ESPNEWS, ESPN International, ESPN Deportes Radio, and ESPN Mobile Properties. Live simulcasts of 23 games begin on March 5, 2009 in the U.S., managed by Turner Sports, will offer comprehensive online coverage of the 2008 PGA Grand Slam of Golf next week including live coverage of the first several holes beginning at 10 a.m. ET on both Oct. 14 & 15. A re-airing of the coverage will be also available one-hour prior to TNT coverage of the event, which begins 4 pm ET/PT on Tuesday and 5 pm ET/PT on Wednesday. Other content including live scoring, photo galleries, daily on-demand highlights and video flyovers.’s Weather On Demand service was picked up by AT&T’s U-verse IPTV platform in Atlanta, Austin, Dallas-Ft.Worth, Indianapolis and San Diego with plans to offer it to all U-verse customers in 2009. Customers can use the service to view current local weather conditions, get forecasts, view satellite imagery and access a range of data accessible by city, zip code or region.
In time for the premiere of its first original drama Crash, Starz has relaunched its website to showcase extras and previews of its programming along with basic community and interactive features including message boards, blogs and widgets. is currently streaming the pilot of Crash which premieres on air Oct. 17 at 10 pm ET/PT.


Hulu stepped up to the live streaming plate for the first time last night showcasing NBC’s coverage of the presidential debate, now available on its on-demand service. (It will also feature live streaming of the final debate on Oct. 15, courtesy of Fox News.) Look for it on the new Election ’08 portal featuring politically-themed speeches, SNL spoofs and commentary. Hulu also announced it is premiering its first original feature film, the documentary Crawford, about the effects of the George W. Bush presidency on his adopted hometown.
Stockholm-based online music service Spotify launched to users in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Finland, Norway and Sweden with licensing deals in place with the 4 major labels – Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, EMI Music and Warner Music Group. Spotify, which is working on clearing U.S.-based streaming rights, enables on-demand streaming of audio content offering both ad-supported and paid subscription models (running 10 pounds/month or 100 pounds per year in the UK.) It has been praised for its huge catalog and socially friendly interface, making it easy to share playlists and discovery new bands.
Online video portal Dailymotion launched a series of ad supported channels featuring a range of original and classic programming from as well as the exclusive offering of the Canadian cult hit jPod. Perfect for digital platforms, the 13-episode, 60m show revolves around a sextet of worker bees at a large video game company.
Britain’s University of Cambridge has launched an entire programming section on iTunes offering more than 300 lectures in audio and video podcast format. Highlights include interviews with some of the University’s Nobel Prize winners as well as The Naked Scientists series, currently the most popular science-themed download on the platform.
Divorce-themed content portal First Wives World announcement that its online serial blog Hot Flashes has been picked up by Amy Einhorn Books/Putnam as a hardcover novel.


Bloomberg launched a mobile version of its website optimized for Explorer for Mobile, Palm, Safari and Opera browsers. To access on mobile, type “” or “” on your mobile device.
Music Choice
introduced a new interactive “Be on TV” shout out feature tied to its Hit List, Alternative, Today’s Country, Musica Urbana, and Hip-Hop and R&B music channels. Send photo or text shout outs via SMS, email, AOL Instant Messenger or and the content will be visible to those turning into those linear channels between 3pm and 10 pm ET, M-F.


Comcast Media Center (CMC) is buying Radiance Technologies Inc. for $5 million, the company reported Tuesday. Sunnyvale, CA-based Radiance builds asset delivery systems for distributing large digital video files. Thomas L. Engdahl, President & CEO of Radiance Technologies, has joined CMC as SVP & GM of Radiance, now a wholly owned subsidiary of the Comcast group.

White label video management firm thePlatform (BBC, Comcast, Sony BMG, CNBC, etc.) claims its clients had a combined total of 329 million video views in July of ’08 according to tracking by ComScore, which would place it third among ComScore’s Video Metrix rankings behind Google (YouTube) and Fox Interactive Media (MySpace.) thePlatform CEO Ian Blaine coined the term “the long leash” to describe the approach content producers should take in distributing video online, allowing content to land where it may but maintaining a modicum of control related to advertising, subscriptions, or digital download services.


NATPE President and CEO Rick Feldman has signed on for another 3-years as head of the group as it continues to transition from a television organization to one focused on the global production and distribution of digital content. NATPE also announced plans to fold the NATPE Mobile++ event into the main show and double the size of its exhibit floor this year to help accommodate multiplatform features such as the tech/emerging media lab, formerly presented as a sidelight to the main show. No news on whether or not more major syndicators will return to the floor, but clearly that’s the goal. The confab (scheduled Jan. 26-29 ’09 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas) will be keynoted by Jon Feltheimer, Co-Chairman and CEO of Lionsgate, a studio that fits the bill of what NATPE sees as a model of the future, producing and distributing television programming, motion pictures, home entertainment, family entertainment, video-on-demand and digitally content. 
The BoSox and Boston Bruins-owned NESN network hired Michael Hall as Director of New Media. The former Product Manager at will oversee strategy and business development of, reporting to NESN President Sean McGrail.
NBA Digital added former Turner Sports executive Michael Doyle and CNN Assignment Manager Tony Lamb as Managing Editors for NBA Digital. They will coordinate cross-platform content including on-air features, interviews and special guest appearances for NBA TV and, reporting to John Cook, Coordinating Producer for NBA Digital.
Babelgum announced several new sales management appointments. Douglas Dicconson joins as VP/Business Development, responsible for growing affiliate distribution. He joins from Ripe Digital. Seth Graeber was hired as National Sales Director from WeatherBug; Megan Wheatley joins as VP/Advertising Operations from Atlas. The team is based in Babelgum’s New York office and will report to Michael Rosen, EVP & Chief Revenue Officer. 
Travel Ad Network announced three hires to be based in the company’s new headquarters in Manhattan’s Financial District.  Andrew (Drew) Podella joins as Business Development Manager; Sara Eader has been named Publisher Account Manager; and Abigail Lane Whitmer was hired as Account Manager. All three are newly created positions.
WeatherBug hired two new Account Executives, Jacob Millstein and Keith Sklar, and one new Senior Account Executive, Rachel Calderon. Based in New York and Los Angeles, they will focus on advertising sales for the West, Southeast and Northeast regions respectively.



Most would agree The Daily Show has redefined political discourse for 20 and 30-somethings in this country. Most younger folks prefer their political coverage laced with humor, irony and sarcasm – otherwise it’s just too depressing. Sundance Channel has picked up on this trend with a new politically-themed minisite Voices on the Election, striking a perfect balance between the serious and cheeky. Mock “Attack Ads” from comedy troupe Boom Chicago and reflections from brilliant New Yorker caricaturist Steve Brodner draw you in. Blog posts on more serious issues add food for thought. Given the political legacy of Sundance founder Robert Redford, who participates in a Q&A here, don’t expect the Right to be too well represented, but gun-toting Motor City Madman Ted Nugent does make an appearance.
