Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, October 7, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Just because Google CEO Eric Schmidt sits on the Apple board it doesn’t mean he can’t see other people. The internet software giant announced a new partnership with Verizon Wireless that will result in a brand new version of Google’s Android mobile OS, optimized for the Verizon network. (Can You Hear Me Now, iPhone?) Verizon says it plans to launch its first Android handsets in the coming weeks (not specifying which manufacturers.) With a base of over 85 million users in the U.S., support from Verizon should give a huge boost to the nascent Android platform. Meanwhile, Microsoft launched version 6.5 of the Windows Mobile OS, set to power a plethora of new smartphones including the HTC Pure and Tilt on AT&T and the Samsung Intrepid on Sprint. The new Windows OS is going after both business and casual users with two new key services, “My Phone” and “Windows Marketplace.” My Phone helps people back up and manage photos, applications and other content while Windows Marketplace is Microsoft’s version of the App store.

In the complex world of online video, simple is better and two major players have teamed up to make online video a little more plug-and-play. Comcast’s white label video management firm thePlatform (which powers online video for cable MSOs and portals such as Fancast) and Tremor Media have teamed up to establish a new set of advertising management features for online video. The newly revamped Acudeo ad management platform will allow premium online video publishers to manage advertising policies, patterns, formats and delivery from a single interface, simplifying the process of monetizing and syndicating videos across the web. Publishers can manage pre-roll, mid-roll, and post-roll ads, or add overlays and banner ads. Ad operation teams can set IAB-compliant in-stream and overlay formats, define playback policies, and sync companion banner ads with ad streams.
Google launched a feature for AdSense mobile that enables publishers to take advantage of the smartphone mobile browsing experience by allowing them to run larger AdSense ads visible on high-end phones. (Previously, AdSense mobile publishers could only serve smaller text and image ads.) The feature displays only on mobile sites searched on web-browsing mobile phones such as the Palm Pre, iPhone or phones running Google’s Android OS.
In an effort to diversify and further grown its business, Google has been working closely with ad agencies to create media custom campaigns that push beyond basic search advertising for clients such as HP, Ford and J.C. Penney, per the WSJ.

Viacom may have emails in their possession revealing that YouTube knowingly violated copyrights by not removing protected videos quickly enough, reports CNET, citing unnamed sources. If YouTube management possessed “actual knowledge” of copyright infringement and did not quickly enough, the company may not be entitled to protection under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act’s safe-harbor provision.
WPP’s GroupM has tapped TidalTV as a third-party technology partner for its interactive TV initiative. TidalTV will handle GroupM’s television advertising optimization and yield management for its addressable television media products.
Local TV station owner LIN TV acquired online advertising services firm Red McCombs Media for an undisclosed sum. Austin, TX-based RM Media specializes in enhanced services for national advertisers including targeted display, rich media, video advertising, custom-built vertical channels, search engine marketing, search engine optimization, and mobile marketing.

More and more viewers are turning to alternative screens to watch their favorite TV shows. Among multichannel subscribers, monthly incidence of multiplatform TV or video viewing on a computer or handheld device reached 17% (15% on a computer, 3% on an iPod/iTouch/other MP3 player, 2% on a cell phone, and 1% on a PSP/Nintendo DS,) according to Horowitz Associates’ latest State of Digital and Interactive Television survey. What’s more, viewers are coming to expect to see their shows available on multiple platforms:

  • Multichannel subscribers watch an average of 130.2 hours of TV programming on a TV set, 1.7 hours on a computer, and 0.3 on a handheld device
  • Over one-third (36%) of those who watch video on alternative platforms (PC or handhelds) say they wish all their favorite shows were available online
  • 30% wish all their favorite shows were available on their handheld devices
  • Overall, 7% of all multichannel subscribers say that if all/most of the TV programs they want to watch were available on their PC, they would get rid of their TV service and just watch them on their PC

Mobile broadband phone penetration will rise to reach 244 million users in the U.S. by 2015, up from 37% penetration in 2009, at which time smartphone penetration will surpass 50% of U.S. mobile phone users, according to an in depth study from UK-based Coda Research Consultancy. Video traffic will be responsible for the majority of traffic growth, forming nearly two thirds (63%) of mobile broadband traffic by 2015 – chiefly made up of short form content including comedy, music, news clips, and viral videos. Netbook ownership and traffic levels will also rise to reach 58 million U.S. users by in 2015.

President of Disney Channels Worldwide Rich Ross has been picked to fill the head of Walt Disney Studios as Chairman, overseeing the Walt Disney, Touchstone, Miramax and Disney/Pixar film studios. The appointment of Mr. Ross, who helped grow Disney’s cable channel empire to a total of 94 channels and channel feeds along with several successful multiplatform offerings, follows the surprise departure of Dick Cook from the studio last month.

“Champions are made from something they have deep inside them  a desire, a dream, a vision.”

Those words from Muhammad Ali capture the sense of purpose that has made diversity part of the business DNA for the 2009 Walter Kaitz Foundation Diversity Champions. Congratulations to Comcast Corp. and Turner Broadcasting System. Please join us at cable’s pre-eminent fundraising event to honor them, and to unite behind our industry’s commitment to diversity. With your support, we’re all champions.

It’s up to you, New York, New York. Inspired perhaps by the well publicized Netflix crowdsourcing initiative, The Big Apple launched a new software app development competition to spur local developers into creating new mobile apps to help the city run more efficiently. Entrants will be able to mine data sets supplied by over 30 city agencies, giving them access to scheduled film shoots, traffic updates, property sales, restaurant inspections or park festivals, including mappable data around school and voting districts. The general public will vote on which apps are the most useful, inventive, appealing, effective, and commercially viable and the winning entrants will vie for more than $20,000 in cash prizes. (One lucky winner even gets to have a private dinner with Mayor Bloomberg.) Developers have until Dec. 8 to submit their software applications.
