Qualcomm is suspending the direct-to-consumer portion of its Flo TV mobile television service and says it may do away with Flo TV subscriptions altogether after next spring. (Affected subscribers will be duly refunded.) A majority of the company’s subscribers come from on deck deals with major carriers Verizon and AT&T, but the bottom line is that the company is beginning to think there has to be a more profitable way to monetize the bandwidth it acquired for the service. (Qualcomm acquired its own spectrum to operate the service independent of carrier networks.) Company executives have been forthcoming in recent months about the challenge of selling subscriptions of linear mobile TV feeds of networks that users only tend to drop in on when breaking news happens. The growth of Netflix on platforms such as the iPhone and iPad hasn’t helped either – consumers will only shell out for so many monthly services.
NBC‘s 10 Local Media sites, now managed in house after the company severed its relationship with Internet Broadcasting, are reporting spikes in visitors, engagement, page views and other metrics during the past year through Aug. 2010. Total visits/ month have grown by 15%; unique visits are up 20% to 12 million in Aug.; and monthly page views are up 32% y/y. The company partly attributes an increased emphasis on sharing and social media features, with 8% of online traffic referrals coming from Facebook and Twitter in Aug. compared to 2% a year ago.
Leading Moscow-based online video publisher Digital Access has launched a Russian version of Vevo. Licensing videos from all 4 major labels – Universal Music, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music and EMI (as well more than 20 homegrown labels) – music.ivi.ru will start with a catalog of some 30,00 ad supported videos that will only play for users based in Russia. Digital Access’ video sites reach an aggregate of audience of 40 million unique Russian internet users.
DisneyChannel.com launched a Halloween-themed multiplatform event enabling kids (with their parents’ permission, of course,) to digitally recreate themselves in virtual Halloween costumes representing some of their favorite Disney Channel characters. Kids can upload a 15-second video to see themselves rendered as “Hannah Montana,” Agent P from Phineas and Ferb or Sicky Vicky from Sonny With A Chance, among others.
NBC.com is also getting into the act this Thursday with a Halloween-themed webisode of “The Office,” featuring the Making of Ryan’s Horror Film “The Third Floor.”
A new B-to-B portal from Speakermatch called GuestMatch.com has launched to help media outlets track down speakers and expert guests for a variety of fields and topics. Blog postings on the site suggest topics for producers looking for ideas. Media outlets can use the service at no charge to them.
Leap Media Group announced a collaboration with TV advertising company AcxiomCorp. to develop and execute digital television advertising campaigns that utilize TV ad units beyond the traditional spot. Leap Media will offer clients a solution integrated with Acxiom’s “Relevance-X” product to identify, locate and reach specific target segments. Offerings include segmentation marketing spots, VOD messaging and iTV applications.
NBC Universal announced plans to invest in targeted TV ad company Invidi Technologies Corp. The company, which has announced partnerships with Dish Network, DirecTV and Verizon’s FiOS TV, provides technology enabling advertisers to send targeted spots to individual set tops based on demographic info., location and other attributes.
Verizon Wireless is expected to announce new LTE data network plans at the CTIA conference on Wed. The network, capable of download speeds of 5-12 Mbps, is expected to power a whole new generation of wireless devices next year supporting video conferencing, interactive TV and advanced gaming. Current Verizon customers will also happy to learn they will be receiving refunds from overbilling of data services after an investigation turned up “phantom fees.”
Yahoo signed a letter of intent to acquire ad creation and optimization platform Dapper, a partner in Yahoo’s Smart Ads dynamic ad platform. Dapper enables advertisers and agencies to build dynamic ad creative by leveraging data to match appropriate products, offers or messages to users who have already expressed intent to purchase.
Amazon is preparing to acquire Spanish designer online retail site BuyVip for close to $100 million, according to the WSJ.
ComScore introduced a new mobile-optimized tagging service for publishers, improving location-based measurement of mobile audiences across all geographies. The service enables brands to tag mobile web and app assets to enable precise measurement of audiences, including unique traffic counts and engagement metrics, across a variety of devices and platforms, including tablet computers such as the iPad. A partnership with mobile analytics and billing firm Bango will speed the deployment of the mobile-optimized tags.
Activision Blizzard announced the latest version of its popular Call of Duty first person shooter game would be released in 3D for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, due out Nov. 9.
NHL.com has updated its free GameCenter app to allows fans to see areas of the ice and net that goals are scored on, including side-by-side views of the goalies in net and the shooters. Also new are real-time team and player stats and trends for the team you are
watching, updated instantly with the team’s history of winning when faced against similar situations during a present game. The league lowered its price for a streaming a full season of out-of-market games for Canadians to $159/season, matching the U.S. price.
CBS’ high school sports site MaxPreps.com launched MaxStats, a mobile stat tracker app tailored for high school football available for the iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch. MaxStats track real-time stats from MaxPreps’ database of Varsity, JV and Freshman teams across 16,400 high school football programs, tracking downs, distance, yard gains, play types, penalties, etc.
Speech recognition technology company Yap launched its free Yap Voicemail app for the iPhone, which converts voicemails into text.
Raymond Gutierrez, EVP/Human Resources and Administration, CBS Television Networks has been elected to Chair the Board of Directors of the National Association for Multi-ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC).
Even you haven’t gotten around to hooking up your TV to the internet (or you’ve been waiting for Google TV to arrive), this may finally motivate you. Hillcrest Labs has launched a slick new version of its Kylo web browser, designed to accompany the donut-shaped Loop pointer (now slashed to $69). The new version of Kylo sports a more intuitive interface, including a great visual search feature powered by the popular Clicker.tv portal that places thumbnail images with your search terms. Kylo was an instant hit when it launched because it provided a pathway to Hulu, but even with this shut down, finding shows through Clicker.tv is easy enough. (Clicker will link you to network sites, Netflix, iTunes, and the Amazon VOD site. One would think Hulu needs to integrate its Hulu Plus subscription offering with the Kylos and Boxees of the world to reach a built in user base, but more on that later.) The new Kylo browser also includes improved integration with Microsoft’s recently updated Windows Media Center, allowing savvy users to switch back and forth between the two interfaces. Bookmarks and playlists are easier to manage and there are many more pre-set links to popular entertainment sites baked in as well.
Correction: The new WWE Magazine subscription app is powered by ThumbMedia Group, creators of the Mozine platform.
