Cynopsis: DIGITAL
10/06/10

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, October 6, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

Qualcomm is suspending the direct-to-consumer portion of its Flo TV mobile television service and says it may do away with Flo TV subscriptions altogether after next spring. (Affected subscribers will be duly refunded.) A majority of the company’s subscribers come from on deck deals with major carriers Verizon and AT&T, but the bottom line is that the company is beginning to think there has to be a more profitable way to monetize the bandwidth it acquired for the service. (Qualcomm acquired its own spectrum to operate the service independent of carrier networks.) Company executives have been forthcoming in recent months about the challenge of selling subscriptions of linear mobile TV feeds of networks that users only tend to drop in on when breaking news happens. The growth of Netflix on platforms such as the iPhone and iPad hasn’t helped either – consumers will only shell out for so many monthly services.

NBC‘s 10 Local Media sites, now managed in house after the company severed its relationship with Internet Broadcasting, are reporting spikes in visitors, engagement, page views and other metrics during the past year through Aug. 2010. Total visits/ month have grown by 15%; unique visits are up 20% to 12 million in Aug.; and monthly page views are up 32% y/y. The company partly attributes an increased emphasis on sharing and social media features, with 8% of online traffic referrals coming from Facebook and Twitter in Aug. compared to 2% a year ago.

NHL.com
has updated its free GameCenter app to allows fans to see  areas of the ice and net that goals are scored on, including side-by-side views of the goalies in net and the shooters.  Also new are real-time team and player stats and trends for the team you are

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Even you haven’t gotten around to hooking up your TV to the internet (or you’ve been waiting for Google TV to arrive), this may finally motivate you. Hillcrest Labs has launched a slick new version of its Kylo web browser, designed to accompany the donut-shaped Loop pointer (now slashed to $69). The new version of Kylo sports a more intuitive interface, including a great visual search feature powered by the popular Clicker.tv portal that places thumbnail images with your search terms. Kylo was an instant hit when it launched because it provided a pathway to Hulu, but even with this shut down, finding shows through Clicker.tv is easy enough. (Clicker will link you to network sites, Netflix, iTunes, and the Amazon VOD site. One would think Hulu needs to integrate its Hulu Plus subscription offering with the Kylos and Boxees of the world to reach a built in user base, but more on that later.) The new Kylo browser also includes improved integration with Microsoft’s recently updated Windows Media Center, allowing savvy users to switch back and forth between the two interfaces. Bookmarks and playlists are easier to manage and there are many more pre-set links to popular entertainment sites baked in as well.

Correction: The new WWE Magazine subscription app is powered by ThumbMedia Group, creators of the Mozine platform.
