Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 31, 2012, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Disney purchases Lucasfilm in a cash and stock deal valued at US $4 billion (half in cash and issuing about 40 million share at the closing of the deal). Lucasfilm is fully owned by Lucasfilm Chairman, CEO and Founder, George Lucas. The new deal will see Disney acquire Lucasfilm’s Star Wars franchise, its operating businesses in live action film production, consumer products, animation, visual effects, and audio post-production. Disney will also get a portfolio of cutting-edge entertainment technologies. Lucasfilm, headquartered in San Francisco, operates under the names Lucasfilm Ltd., LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic, and Skywalker Sound. As of now, the intent is for Lucasfilm employees to remain in their current locations. Kathleen Kennedy, currently Co-Chairman of Lucasfilm, will become President of Lucasfilm, reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Additionally, Kennedy will serve as the brand manager for Star Wars, working directly with Disney’s global lines of business to continue growing the saga and franchise. She will also serve as executive producer on new Star Wars feature films, with George Lucas serving as creative consultant. Star Wars Episode 7 is set for release in 2015 under the Disney-Lucasfilm brand, which will be followed by Episodes 8 and 9 and then a new Star Wars feature every two to three years. Lucas, who previously announced plans step down from the daily operations of Lucasfilm, said in a statement, “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime.” Disney also owns Pixar, Marvel, ESPN and ABC.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Channel 5‘s Milkshake! (UK) orders a new flash animated series based author/illustrator Sue Hendra’s popular Wanda and the Alien books from Random House Children’s Screen Entertainment (RHCSE), the UK production studio created by Random House Children’s Publishers UK (RHCP) and Komixx Entertainment. Currently in pre-production, the new Wanda and the Alien series (52×10) is slated to launch Q4 2013. Wanda and the Alien celebrates how people are similar and different. Will Brenton of Wish Films (The Tweenies, Wibbly Pig) is heading creative development on the new series. Milkshake! is a daily preschool programming block that airs on Channel 5 weekdays from 6a-9:15a and Saturdays and Sundays 6a-10a.

LICENSING

Sloane Ranger, a preppy style leader, enters into an exclusive licensing pact with boutique NYC licensing agency HAP Consulting. Sloane Ranger is growing its consumer base by offering its Prepster American counterparts a modern and trend forward take on classic and iconic styles. HAP Consulting, noted for transforming brands into lifestyle destinations, will be responsible for managing the licensing roll out of the Sloane Ranger brand across a wide range of product categories including apparel, personal accessories, back to campus and home furnishings. HAP Consulting also represents branded clients including Milton Glaser, DwellStudio, Halfbrick Studios (Fruit Ninja and Jet Pack Joy Ride), Momiji, Bonnie Marcus, Mary Engelbreit, Walter Knabe and consulting clients include Zappar and Flavorlopes.

ITV Studios Global Entertainment (ITVS GE) enters into two new license deals for creator/producer Gerry Anderson’s Classic Thunderbirds brand with Truffle Shuffle and Peter Black Footwear and Accessories (PBFA). Truffle Shuffle launches a Classic Thunderbirds inspired line of T-shirts for men and women, and sweaters for men, all featuring various characters from the series. The products are available now exclusively online from www.truffleshuffle.com. PBFA introduces a limited edition gift line for men, which is exclusive to Marks & Spencer, including sound key chains, wash bags, mugs and egg cup sets. ITVS GE is in discussion with a number of other potential licensees as it grows the licensing program for the Classic Thunderbirds brand.

MARKETING

Video game retailer GameStop Corp. is unrolling a series of about 80 new GameStop Kids holiday stores in malls across the US for holiday 2012. The various locations will feature a range of kid/family centric video games, accessories, video game licensed products, toy brand and various collectibles. Customers not near one of the GameStop Kids (www.gamestop.com/kids) locations can visit any US GameStop store and place an order for items, including the collection of GameStop Kids products for free shipping (quantities may be limited). Some of the titles and products available at the new stores include:

Skylanders: GameStop exclusive Golden Dragonfire Cannon Battlepack, additional characters, throws, backpacks, carriers and displays
Angry Birds: Angry Birds plush with sound effects, splat balls, mash’ems launcher pack, backpack clips, and mugs. Other products coming include Angry Birds Star Wars plush
Lego: Lord of the Rings, Stars Wars and Harry Potter build sets along with Marvel character build sets

MORE KIDS STUFF

The fourth annual TeenNick HALO Awards (www.teennick.com/halo/) will air on Nick at Nite on Monday, November 19 at 8-9:30p. The annual special will feature Tyra Banks, Justin Bieber, Josh Duhamel and Emma Stone and creator/host/executive producer Nick Cannon celebrating unique teens who are Helping and Leading Others (HALO), partnering each teen honorees with a star who share their commitment to community service and area of interest. The TeenNick HALO Awards will be taped live from the Hollywood Palladium in on Saturday, November 17. Following its premiere on Nick at Nite, the special will also encore on Tuesday, November 20, at 10p on TeenNick. The presenting sponsors for the fourth annual TeenNick HALO Awards are Chevrolet, Covergirl, Reese’s Puff cereal and Target.

Discovery Familia, a US Spanish-language network targeted to Hispanic moms and their preschoolers, adds new series, Ra Ra el Leon, Iconicos and Joe y Jack, to its kid’s programming block. Ra Ra el Leon is set to premiere on Discovery Familia on Monday, November 12, at 10a, where the series, which focuses on rhyming, repetition, re-telling and rhythm, will air daily, with Joe y Jack premiering on Monday, November 19 at 1p. Also new to the network is the mixed live-action and 3D animated series Iconicos, which is airing daily at 2:30p.

Majesco Entertainment and its development partner Chaotic Moon release the new Hello Kitty Picnic with Sanrio Friends for Nintendo DS. In the new game, players join Hello Kitty and her various Sanrio friends as they prepare for a picnic, playing 10 mini-games including Hidden Object, Spot the Difference, and Picnic Blanket Checkers as they collect items for the picnic. They also explore and decorate environments including Hello Kitty’s bedroom, kitchen, and others. Along the way players earn apples to receive special items to customize Hello Kitty’s outfits and decorate scene backgrounds. Kids can interact with Hello Kitty with the 3DS touch screen and also play with friends using the multiplayer mode. The game features Sanrio characters such as My Melody, Keroppi, Chococat, Badtz-Maru, Little Twin Stars, among others.
