Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 31, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

MLB Network is rejigging the lineup now that we’re in the offseason. The channel announced that it will re-launch the series Hot Stove as a morning show, with Matt Vasgersian and Harold Reynolds hosting the live, two-hour weekday talk show starting Monday, November 12 at 9a. Hot Stove will also feature perspectives from writers from Sports on Earth, including 2012 National Sportswriter of the Year Joe Posnanski. Meanwhile, MLB Tonight will become to a year-round show for the first time, airing throughout the entire offseason at 6p and 8p.

On the Air

Saturday night’s telecast of the Notre Dame victory over Oklahoma on ABC delivered the largest audience for a college football game this season across any network, according to Nielsen and the network. The matchup drew a 5.2 average rating with 8,627,000 viewers. The game also scored among adults 18-49 (2.9 rating), men 18-49 (4.0 rating) and men 18-34 (3.4 rating). Oklahoma City was the highest rated metered market for the game with a 36.0 rating followed by Tulsa (28.9 rating), Indianapolis (13.3 rating), Austin (11.6 rating) and Columbus (9.4 rating).

The NHL’s shiniest gem, the Winter Classic, is on the verge of getting cancelled due to the lockout, according to ESPN. A source familiar with the league’s plan told ESPNNewYork.com that the league is expected to cancel the Jan. 1 game on Thursday.

Meanwhile, TNT has scrapped plans to bring its studio show on-site for tomorrow night’s Knicks/Nets game due to the hurricane, according to USA Today. Instead the show will remain in Atlanta for the evening. The paper also reports that ESPN has hired Flip Saunders and Antonio Davis as analysts for the network.

Major League Soccer scored another record-setting season in the stands by drawing an average of 18,807 fans to games this season. That tops last year’s previous record of 17,844, according to Goal. The Seattle Sounders was tops in the league, pulling 43,144 a game to CenturyLink Field. The playoffs hit ESPN2 tomorrow night with Chicago/Houston at 9p.

FUEL TV will unleash a new UFC special next month with UFC Unrestricted. The series will offer a behind-the-scenes look at UFC 148: Silva vs. Sonnen II and make its premiere on Nov. 10 at 1p, immediately following the FUEL TV post-fight show for UFC on FUEL TV.

The Portland Trail Blazers found their new leader, naming AEG Sports executive Chris McGowan to serve as the team’s new President and COO. McGowan previously worked with the Los Angeles Kings and Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Galaxy as COO of AEG Sports. McGowan joins the Blazers on Nov. 12 and will replace Larry Miller, who returned to Nike earlier this year.
