10/31/07

Good Morning.  It’s Wednesday, October 31 , 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Dueling statements:

WGA:

“Today’s negotiations began at 10:00 AM. No significant progress was made. At 4:30 PM, we informed the AMPTP that we would prepare a comprehensive package proposal for their review today. At 6:45 PM, we told them the proposal would be ready in 15 minutes. Management negotiators responded by saying they preferred to leave for the day and hear our proposal tomorrow, the expiration date of our contract.”

AMPTP:

“Both sides worked on modifications to their proposals.  The Guild indicated that they were preparing a comprehensive package and would be ready to present it tomorrow.  The mediator scheduled the meeting for 10 a.m. We are committed to a fair, reasonable and sensible agreement that is beneficial for everyone.  However, opportunities do not come without challenges. We will not agree to any proposals that impose unreasonable restrictions and unjustified costs.  We will not ignore the challenges of today’s economic realities, the shifts in audience taste and viewing habits and the unpredictability of still-evolving technology.”

The writers’ contract expires at midnight tonight and little or no progress was made during negotiations between the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) yesterday. Tomorrow evening at 7pm, the WGA West is holding a general membership meeting at the Los Angeles Convention Center, and announce if and when a strike will be called, which could be as soon as 1201a Friday morning.

Tonight’s Premieres:
Fox Reality: There’s Something About Miriam (sneak preview of the U.S. premiere) at 1a

Tonight’s Finales:
Fox Reality: The Search for the Next Elvira at 11p

~ MORE STUFF ~

ABC ordered a full-season pickup of the comedy Samantha Who? and will move ahead with the remaining back nine episodes. Samantha Who?, starring Christina Applegate, joins two other ABC dramas Private Practice and Pushing Daisies which have also received full-season pickups.

Oxygen will roll out a new original series Coolio & The Gang in second quarter 2008 starring ’90s rap star Coolio. The six half-hour episodes will focus on Coolio as he raises six teenagers while juggling his career and new business deals. The series is produced by Oxygen and RDF USA.

Broadcast Evening News Ratings Wrap-Up: In a week filled with news of the fires in California, ABC’s World News gained a lead on its nearest competitor, NBC’s Nightly News. Here are the results for the week of October 22, 2007:
ABC: 8.95 million total viewers; 2.3/9 and 2.81 million A25-54
NBC: 8.51 million total viewers; 2.1/8 and 2.58 million A25-54
CBS: 6.57 million total viewers; 1.6/6 and 2.02 million A25-54

Another report from Nielsen revealed that 13.7% of U.S. TV households are able to receive HD signals; and 11.3% of U.S. TV households are currently receiving and watching at least one HD network or station. Los Angeles has the highest number of HD capable homes at 20.4%, while New York has highest percentage homes using that capability at 17.5%.

Actor/singer Robert Goulet died at the age of 73 while waiting for a lung transplant.  His last performance was in Syracuse New York on September 20th, where he performed a one man show – A Man and His Music.  He was also most recently seen in TV commercials for Emerald Nuts.  Goulet hit the big time in the US when he appeared in Camelot on Broadway as Sir Lancelot in 1960.  His multiple appearances on television thereafter made him popular to the non-Broadway attending crowd, appearing often on The Ed Sullivan Show, and daytime talkers such as The Mike Douglas Show.  A man with a self-deprecating sense of humor, he sang once on the Mike Douglas Show while sitting in the aisle and crooning a lovely lady in the audience.  Only at the end of his love song did the lady pull off her wig and reveal she was a man! Goulet was set up.  Goulet’s laughing and rolling down the stairs endeared him.

Correction :  Sony Pictures TV will not be attending NATPE 2008 in January, not on the floor nor in a suite; rather the distributor is attending CES this time.

~  PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

John Francis Daley has been added as a series regular to the cast of FOX’s Bones. He will portray Dr. Lance Sweets, a young FBI-appointed therapist with whom Dr. Temperance Brennan and FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth meet with to determine if their crime-solving partnership can continue.

Dr. Ruth has joined the lineup at Retirement Living TV‘s M-F 2-hour talker, Daily Cafe, and will host her own segment and you can guess her topic.  Dr. Ruth will provide tips and insights as well as take calls from viewers.

You thought Tyra was a busy girl before?  Tyra Banks is expanding her brand and delving into a slew of projects with a new multi-year agreement with Warner Bros., report Variety. The deal allows Tyra, host and producer of America’s Next Top Model, to develop scripted projects with Warner Bros. Television and reality ventures with Warner Horizon. She will also move into film, working on direct-to-DVD projects for Warner Premiere including adaptations of the Clique series of teen novels which will be produced with Alloy Entertainment. In addition, Tyra also has a series development pact with The CW, which is half-owned by Warner Bros. which includes both scripted and non-scripted projects. Furthermore, Tyra hired Laura Armstrong as VP/Development and Production for her own Bankable Productions and has advanced Bradford Sisk to VP/Production for Bankable.
