Cynopsis: DIGITAL
10.02.13

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 2, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Fandango is the first star to appear in the latest Samsung Galaxy Note 3 device, debuting its recommendation service Here & Now. A guide to new movies, nearby theatres, and the ability the purchase tickets based on a user’s location, Fandango will also offer its original movie preview video series Weekend Ticket.

Walmart produced an original reality competition web series, called Get On The Shelf, in which entrepreneurs vie for the chance for their product to be sold in the mega stores. Two episodes are currently available on Walmart’s site and YouTube.

CONTENT MEDIA

AMC launched its third season of The Walking Dead web series on AMC.com and its YouTube channel. Titled The Oath, the season consists of three installments and is produced and directed by WD’s Greg Nicotero. Each episode is seven to ten minutes each.

YouTube’s channel VICE is bringing one of its most successful shows, Fresh Off The Boat, back for a second season. Chef Eddie Huang hosts the show as he travels the world to discover unique meals. The first season’s 15 episodes brought in three million views, and has since racked up 1.4 million Facebook likes and almost a million Google+ followers.

The Follow Channel on YouTube gives sports fans the chance to step into the lives of athletes for a month, starting with NFL Seattle Seahawks star player Richard Sherman. The network is a collaboration between Break Media and Tupelo Honey Raycom that grew out of the web series Follow Jimmer, which focused on BYU’s Jimmer Fredette as he competed for a spot in the NBA. Miami Heat’s Chris Bosh is the next athlete to be followed by the show.

Entertainment network Scream Factory is offering a month of Halloween themed original programming on its YouTube channel in a campaign called 31 Days of Screams. It will also include social media contests leading up to the holiday that will give fans a chance to win scary movie classics. Slasher, zombie and vampire lovers are all welcome to enter.

Networks (both Cable & Broadcast) are faced with eroding ratings and ad dollars shifting from TV to Digital. That’s why Cynopsis is presenting a conference on what networks are doing – and what they need to do more of – to aggressively evolve to compete, and profit in this shifting landscape. Join us as our experts share the latest business and advertising models for success at the Cynopsis Future TV Summit!

ADVERTISING

Tech agencies DG MediaMind and Marin announced a partnership yesterday that will integrate its data search platforms to help agencies create digital campaigns for clients more quickly and easily. Associate Vice President of DG’s Product Marketing honcho Nick Talbert told Cynopsis that the integration will reduce the average set-up time for campaigns by 85 percent.

MOBILE ADVERTISING

The Home Depot launched a gaming app called Home Depot’s Corso’s Cornhole Challenge as part of its sponsorship with ESPN’s College Gameday, which challenges users to a football toss for a chance to win prizes. One of the 25 gamers could be chosen for a grand prize of a VIP College Gameday football playoff trip. The app is available at no cost for iPhone and Android devices.

Call for Submissions: Cynopsis is producing a Halloween Programming Guide which comes out on October 17 and will be sent to all Cynopsis and Cynopsis Kids subscribers. If your network has a Halloween-themed programming, please send your listings to Cathy Applefeld Olson at [email protected] no later than Friday Oct 4. Please include the following information: type of program (i.e. series, special, documentary, movie or holiday-themed episode), title, dates and times of all airings (please indicate when the show first premieres and when subsequent encores will air). Cathy will send you a confirmation email following each submission (if you don’t receive a confirmation email, please resubmit).

RESEARCH

Not only are in-app ads being perceived by consumers as disruptive, they’re hardly making a mark, according to a new Forrester study. Half of U.S. smartphone users ignored the ads completely; 43 percent found them disruptive and only 28 percent described the ads as relevant.
In other words: The in-app ads need some work, but the study also accounted for 40 percent recall of in-app spots that advertise another relevant app, app upgrade or brand and product within the app.

Nielsen’s SocialGuide top social TV programs on Twitter for last week include:
1.      AMC’s Breaking Bad blew every TV show out of the water, with 1,237,900 million tweets.
2.      NBC’s The Voice: 273,500 tweets
3.      FOX’s The X Factor: 247,200 tweets
4.      FOX’s Glee: 232,200 tweets
5.      ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy: 225,400 tweets

TECHNOLOGY

Although Samsung‘s Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear hit the shelves yesterday, the company is expected to release a smartphone with a curved screen late this month. The screen will include a strip along the side of the smartphone that will display notifications and content even when the device is enclosed in a skin.
In other words: Samsung’s trying to innovate by taking a different approach from Apple, which is pushing slimmer devices.

EXEC MOVES

Facebook has hired David Lawenda as its Vice President of Global Sales in the U.S. Lawenda was formerly Univision’s advertising sales President, and takes over for seven-year Facebook-vet Tom Arrix. The site also lost its VP of Global Sales and Operations Grady Burnett to the app measurement and ad firm Flurry. Burnett will lead Flurry as its Chief Operating Officer.

Social media and marketing measurement firm Socialbakers has hired Neil Morgan as the company’s first CMO. Morgan was previously Adobe‘s Vice President of Digital Marketing Solutions.

Carla Sacks is joining the New York division of the ad agency M3 Creative. She previously was located in the Los Angeles office, and worked on successful branding campaigns including USA Network’s “Characters Welcome.”

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY

YouTube announced it will host its first music awards show in November, streamed live under the direction of Spike Jonze. Lady Gaga, Arcade Fire and Eminem are few of the big headliners so far, but the ceremony is really meant to feature musicians who made a name first on YouTube. Nominees for the six awards categories will be announced later this month, and winners will be chosen by global YouTube users’ votes. YouTube released a commercial for the show yesterday, which features the host Jason Schwartzman. Watch the commercial at www.cynopsis.com.
