Cynopsis

10/22/08

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 22, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Premieres:
The CW: Stylista at 9p

THE N IS THE NETWORK TOTALLY FOR AND ABOUT TEENS

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Several new series and episodes orders were handed out:

  • Showtime gave an early holiday present to the drama Dexter as the premium cable network renewed the series for seasons four and five with 12 episodes each. Michael C. Hall stars as the blood splatter expert who is also a serial killer at night. Production on season four begins next spring in Los Angeles.
  • The CW okayed additional scripts for Privileged despite the series posting lower than average ratings for the network, reports THR. The CW cites the show fits with their brand and has shown some growth in its Tuesday 9p time slot.
  • CBS picked up two more scripts for its Monday night comedy Worst Week, per TV Week. The sitcom, with lead-in Two and a Half Men, averaged 9.9 million viewers and a 3.2/7 among A18-49. The series is produced by CBS Paramount Network Television and Universal Media Studios.
  • NBC committed to nine new episodes of its frosh drama Knight Rider giving the series a full-season order. Since it premiered on September 24, Knight Rider averaged a 2.4/7 with A18-49 and 7.4 million viewers overall.

The CW confirmed it will be the sole broadcast network offering regular programming on election night, November 4. The CW will pay homage to election results though by presenting abbreviated original episodes of 90210 and Privileged so local stations can insert two election updates each hour. To date, 90% of CW affiliates will participate with this cut-in opportunity.

Since its debut on September 8, MSNBC’s primetime news/commentary program The Rachel Maddow Show has averaged 1.7 million viewers in its 9p time slot compared with 800,000 previously, cites New York Times. The Rachel Maddow Show has also averaged a higher rating with the A25-54 demo for 13 out of 25 nights than its competitor CNN’s Larry King Live also airing at 9p.

Broadcast Evening News Ratings Wrap-Up: The final results for the week of October 13, 2008:
NBC: 7.83 million total viewers and 2.0/8 A25-54
ABC: 7.61 million total viewers and 2.0/8 A25-54
CBS: 5.89 million total viewers and 1.4/6 A25-54

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

USA Network is moving forward with the pilot White Collar lifting its cast contingency stipulation. The pilot, from Fox Television Studios, stars Matthew Bomer and Tim DeKay playing a con artist and an FBI agent respectively who form an unusual partnership. Bronwen Hughes (Burn Notice) was tapped to direct.

FOX finalized its cast for the animated high school series Good Vibes from 20th Century Fox Television and Good Humor TV says Variety. Josh Gad, Adam Brody, Debi Mazar, Olivia Thirlby, Alan Tudyk and Jake Busey will begin voicing scripts early next month. Good Vibes was picked up by FOX as a pilot presentation and is ramping up for a possible spring roll out.

Film star Vince Vaughn has a single-camera 30m comedy pilot in development for FOX and 20th Century Fox Television, per Variety. Vaughn also executive produces the project about a couple of guys just out of college adjusting to the real world. Brothers Jim and Steve Armogida will write the pilot for Vaughn’s Wild West Picture Show Productions while Vaughn’s sister Victoria Vaughn will also executive produce. Vaughn’s deal with FOX allows him to cast the project and have oversight on creative aspects.

Muse Entertainment will handle principal photography on the pilot Night and Day for TNT starting today in Albuquerque, NM and concluding November 11. The pilot, produced in association with Muse Entertainment and Tandem Communications, blends crime drama with family drama and stars William Fichtner (Prison Break, Crash).

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY
:
There was a lot happening on the mobile application front yesterday on the eve of today’s launch of T-Mobile’s G1, the first handset powered by Google’s Android operating system. First of all Google released the open source code that powers the Android mobile operating system, freeing it from a veil of secrecy that has kept developers in the dark since the Linux-derived platform was first announced last November. Then Blackberry maker Research In Motion (RIM) announced it is developing its own version of the App Store. The application storefront, expected to launch in March 2009, will work with eBay’s PayPal to facilitate payments and will begin accepting applications from third party developers for inclusion on the platform in December. Developers will be able to charge whatever they want for their apps with RIM taking a 20% commission of each sale.  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.
