Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, October 21, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Yahoo reported its fourth consecutive quarter of declining sales as net revenue dropped 15%, display ad sales fell by 8% and search ad revenue dipped a precipitous 19%. But the company managed to exceed analysts estimates, thanks mostly to cost cutting measures, helping to boost net income to $186 million – up 244% from a year ago. “We had a solid third quarter that signals our major businesses have stabilized,” said CEO Carol Bartz in a press release. The company, waiting for regulators to approve a major search partnership with Microsoft, began an ambitious global marketing campaign last month after launching a major homepage redesign and making improvements to its email and IM platforms.

Combining metrics across multiple platforms, ESPN says it delivered its biggest audience ever in Sept., including a combined total day rating of 1.65 million homes across ESPN’s networks, a 250% spike in time spent on ESPN 360.com (per Move Analytics,) and a 21% boost in unique visitors to ESPN.com, totaling 28.8 million visitors for the month. ESPN.com also had more viewers of online video in September than ever, with 9.3 million viewers logging nearly 196 million minutes of video viewing.

TVGuide.com will also syndicate original editorial content to YoungHollywood.com.
Sales of MTV Games, EA and Harmonix‘ The Beatles edition of the Rock Band console game were sufficient to put it over the top of other music games in September, but some analysts had expected better. The companies sold about 583,000 units during its first month, including 254k for the Xbox 360 and 208k for the Nintendo Wii according to NPD Group, but projections topped 1 million following an ambitious marketing campaign.
San Francisco-based Episodic, once in the business of producing its own web series, unveiled yet another soup-to-nuts white label online video publishing and monetization suite. The goal is to use advanced data mining to help marketers better contour their campaigns. As part of the agreement, Accenture will be one of three investors in a $31 million funding round for Adchemy, joining the Mayfield Fund and August Capital, and bringing Adchemy’s total investment raised to $58 million.
Marketing agency M3 Television is changing its name to M3 Creative to emphasize its shift to multiplatform creative. The Burbank-based company is increasing its focus on branded, cable, web, EPK, mobile and related content; recent projects include webisodes for American Express’ Enthusiast’s photostream and the iTunes/Best Buy featurettes for NBC Universal’s “Couples Retreat.”
Former News Corp. President Peter Chernin is now advising Comcast on its bid to acquire a controlling stake in NBC Universal, per the New York Times. Not to worry – NBCU Chief Jeff Zucker has been reassured that he will keep his job if the deal goes through. Comcast has also retained UBS and Morgan Stanley to advise on the deal, while G.E. is working with J.P. Morgan and Goldman Sachs.
Digital media distribution company Yangaroo signed a deal with CMJ Network to power digital track distribution to over 500 college radio stations throughout the U.S.
Screen size and a better picture are the two most important factors for prospective buyers of TVs, according to market research company The NPD Group‘s 2009 TV Inventory Study. One-in-four consumers say they’ll most likely be making a new TV purchase in the next six months.
Barnes & Noble unveiled an e-book reader with some pizzazz. This one features dual screens: a 3.5-inch color touch-screen and a 6-inch E-ink display. The bottom color screen allows you to browse through titles by dragging your finger from side-to-side.) “The Nook” has the ability to wirelessly access BN.com’s 1 million+ title eBook store via AT&T’s 3G network or Wi-Fi (free at Barnes and Noble stores.) It also features some cool sharing features, such as the ability to lend the rights to books you buy to a friend for up to two weeks. Newspaper and Magazines subscriptions come in “The Daily” feed and personalization features allow you to change the wallpaper and screensaver. It’s due out in Nov. at a price of $259, matching Amazon’s recent price cut for the Kindle.
Panel is a new music curation app for the iPhone providing a panel of music industry experts to suggest new albums in various categories including rock, pop, indie, alternative and jazz. (Confirmed panelists include Mark and Wendy Redfern, founders of Under the Radar magazine, Jason Hughes, owner of Seattle’s Sonic Boom records.) In more digital realignment at Fox, Fox Filmed Entertainment (FFE) has formed a new group called Fox Digital Studios (FDS), charged with development, production and development of original and derivative programming for initial release on new and emerging media platforms. Former Fox Atomic executive David Worthen Brooks will oversee creative for the new digital studio, and Roger will work closely with FDS to monetize the content created by FDS.

Eric Henry and Jim Morical from the audio visual manufacturers representation firm Kodo James have joined digital signage specialist Tightrope Media Systems as CEO and Chief Business Development Officer (CBDO), respectively.
Digital video measurement and distribution company Tubefilter has acquired web series review site Tilzy.tv, the folks who put on the Onfronts ad presentation event in New York last spring. The two companies know each other well – they collaborated on putting together the first annual Streamy Awards last year, which helped raise awareness of the burgeoning web video medium. And the match makes sense at least from a geographical point of view. It gives LA-based Tubefilter a web-savvy presence in the Big Apple. From now on Tilzy’s missives can be found at the Tubefilter’s News site.
