Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 18, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing. 

MTV Networks and Baidu.com Inc., one of China’s largest search engine companies, have partnered to offer MTV and Nickelodeon programming content on www.baidu.com Under the deal, MTV will provide MTV Zone, the first branded area to be featured on Baidu, where Chinese consumers can download the programming for free after viewing an ad, or if they choose they can pay to download the content, which will vary in length from 10-30 minutes.  Consumers in China will have access to 15,000 hours of MTV and Nickelodeon original program content and music videos from five Asian labels, EE Media, Modern Sky, Music Nation, and Ocean Butterflies.  MTVN China will offer locally produced shows including MTV Music Wire, Tian Lai Cun, MTV Chart Countdown, MTV English, MTV Mega Star, live music events among others.  Existing Nickelodeon programming to be available will include SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer and Unfabulous and Drake & Josh.  Existing MTV programs such as Cribs and Laguna Beach will also be available.  The MTV Zone will include advertising, with Motorola and P&G already signed up as the first two advertisers for launch.  MTVN and Baidu will share ad revenues. 

In other MTV China news … MTV has entered into an exclusive partnership with Linktone Ltd., a Chinese wireless content distributor, under which Linktone will operate wireless application protocol services for MTV China on China Unicom’s platform.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Sean McNamara has been tapped to direct the live-action Bratz movie, according to a report in Production Weekly.  Based on the dolls and characters created by MGA Entertainment, the Bratz movie is being produced by Crystal Sky Pictures and Avi Arad Productions and features screenplay by John Doolittle.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Turner Broadcasting will offer Cartoon Network content for download to mobile phones via Nokia Content Discoverer, a new mobile storefront.  Cartoon Network video clips and games will be available Nokia mobile phone users who have the Nokia Content Discoverer on their phones, in Norway, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and the UK.  Cartoon Network show content that will be available includes, Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Laboratory and Johnny Bravo among others.

HIT Entertainment has tapped Denmark’s Kidz Entertainment to head its sales efforts across Scandinavia and to serve as the primary agent for HIT’s core preschool properties including, Thomas & Friends, Bob the Builder and Fireman Sam and Pingu.  Broadcast deals for these preschool properties have been made with NRK and TV2 in Norway, Kanal 5 (Sweden), Channel 4 (Finland), DRTV (Denmark), YLE (Finland) and RUV (Iceland).  The agreement with Kidz was put together by HIT’s Jon Owen, VP/Business Development.  Owen joined HIT in May 2006, from Fox where he was a European commercial director.

Virgin Comics and Tiger Hill Entertainment have included the digital version of the new comic/graphic novel, John Woo’s Seven Brothers, online at Yahoo!’s Internet Time Capsule, which is designed to document life in 2006 to be opened by Yahoo in 2020.  Developed by movie director John Woo and Tiger Hill Entertainment in collaboration with the newly formed Virgin Comics, the debut issue of Seven Brothers is to be released today nationwide.  Seven Brothers is set in LA and the story revolves around a cast of international characters, each with their own supernatural abilities, and spans seven centuries and as many continents.  Seven Brothers is being written by bestselling comic book author, Garth Ennis, in collaboration with John Woo.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Kong: Return to the Jungle, the new 3D CGI animated feature length movie, is set to be released on DVD this November 21, 2006 by Genius Products, LLC.  The movie is produced by BKN and producer/creator Rick Ungar.  Genius Products, LLC is jointly owned by Genius Products, Inc. and The Weinstein Company.

Majesco Entertainment has released Teen Titans 2 for the Game Boy Advance.  Licensed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, the game is based on DC Comics’ Teen Titans characters and Warner Bros. Animation’s TV series.  Teen Titans 2 was developed by Artificial Mind & Movement and is rated E10+.

Electronic Arts has released its much anticipated new video game The Sims 2 Pets for PlayStation 2, GameCube and as a PC expansion pack for the PC game, The Sims 2, with each version including custom content specifically tailored to the platform.  The game includes new animals, designer breed mixes, new tricks as well as the Create-a-Pet feature where players can mix and match body types, different personalities, accessories and so on.  In North America, The Sims 2 Pets will be available on Nintendo DS by November 2, 2006, on Game Boy Advance by November 9th, 2006 and on the PSP system by November 30th. In France and the UK, the game will be available on Nintendo DS by October 27th, 2006. In all other markets, The Sims 2 Pets will be available on Nintendo DS by November 3rd, 2006, on GBA by November 17th, 2006 and on the PSP system by December 15th.  A mobile version is also expected to debut soon.

STONE SOUP

By the way, if you are planning on contributing anything to the Yahoo! Internet Time Capsule  (writings, photos, drawings, audio or video), you only have 21 days until the virtual time capsule is closed.  Created by artist Jonathan Harris, the capsule began accepting submissions on October 10, and so far 31,832 items in a range of categories have been registered from people around the world.  (www. timecapsule.yahoo.com ) Harris has created a bunch of other tremendously cool things – not that anyone has time but one of my favorites is Phylotaxis ( www.phylotaxis.com ), which he created for Seed Magazine.

Channel One and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, promoting excellence in journalism, have introduced a new multi-year national initiative designed to help US teens understand and appreciate the personal rights/freedoms guaranteed them under America’s First Amendment.  Channel One will support the campaign across multiple platforms and outreach programs including, on its TV programming, ChannelOne.com, public service announcements, student events, and instructional materials/resources for educators. The three-year program, funded with a Knight Foundation grant of $2.25 million, will begin in January 2007.

CORRECTION:  In yesterday’s edition I misspelled the name of the animated adventure series Mushiking, The Guardians of the Forest.  The word is Mushiking, which I’m told is Japanese for bug.

Casting Call: Auditions for the Stupid Pet Tricks and Stupid Human Tricks features on CBS’ The Late Show with David Letterman will be held in Jacksonville, Florida, this Saturday at the Jacksonville Humane Society, 8464 Beach Blvd., from 10a-2p. Performances should be funny, safe and original. All types of animals are welcome and they must perform voluntarily and be treated humanely. Casting Call: ExerciseTV, the free VOD fitness and sports training network, along with its founder, Jake of Body by Jake, are searching nationwide for America’s Next Fitness Star (ANFS). The contest is open to all who think they have the stamina and desire to inspire viewers to get in shape. The winner will receive a one-year paid contract with ExerciseTV, with appearances on the original series Star Trainers and a supply of New Balance footwear and apparel.
