Twitter rolled out a new feature yesterday that removed the barrier preventing users from sending Direct Messages unless they’re following each other. However, The feature is opt-in, so this doesn’t mean everyone suddenly faces a spam threat.
In Other Words: This is likely a way for brands to sponsor Direct Messages.
Univision and Bedrocket Media have paired up to launch the Hispanic broadcaster’s first online network, Flama, on YouTube. Original content will be produced mostly in English. The network will take off in early 2014.
Despite a lag time of only 24 hours in 125 countries, within 16 hours more than half a million people had downloaded a copy of The Walking Dead season four premiere through a torrent site, reports TorrentFreak. More than 15 percent of the downloaders came from the U.S., where the AMC smash streams for free on the net’s web site.
Netflix has ordered a new psychological thriller series from the creators of the show Damages. The Video Ink reports the new show has not been named yet. The 13 episode series will start production in early 2014.
IFC debuted a new Comedy Drop during Festival Supreme Comedy Week on-air and at IFC.com as part of the new Festival Supreme. The 2-4 minute stand-up videos feature NYC comedians dropping in on unsuspecting audiences at restaurants or salons. The Festival Supreme is the first one-day comedy and music festival from Jack Black’s band, Tenacious D.
The Weather Channel launched a new six-episode web series today called I Am Unstoppable on www.Weather.com. The show chronicles outdoor athletes and the extremes they have conquered to become champions of their sports.
Webisodes Network premiered a new original web talk show called Away From Keyboard (AFK) today. Video Game High School’s Jimmy Wong hosts the show, which features top YouTube users and internet icons filmed in front of a live audience. The show can be watched at www.webisodesnetwork.com.
Call for Submissions: Cynopsis is producing its annual Holiday Programming Guide, which comes out on November 26 and will be sent to all Cynopsis and Cynopsis Kids subscribers. If your network has holiday-themed programming airing from November 27 through December 31, please send your listings to Lynn Leahey at [email protected] no later than Monday November 18. Please include the following information: type of program (i.e. series, special, documentary, movie or holiday-themed episode), title, dates and times of all airings (please indicate when the show first premieres and when subsequent encores will air). A confirmation email will be sent following each submission from Lynn (if you don’t receive a confirmation email, please resubmit).
Sony launched the new SmartWatch 2, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 in the U.S. yesterday. The new $200 waterproof timepiece is supposed to be a companion to Sony’s smartphones and tablets and have Gmail, Facebook and Twitter capability. The Z Ultra tablet and the Z1 smartphone are available for around $700.
Google is just on the horizon of releasing a new smartwatch, too, according to a source at 9to5Google. It will use Google’s mobile assistant Google Now, which includes emails, texts and calendar functionality. An official announcement may come by the end of this month.
Apple sent out press invites yesterday for its latest product reveal on Oct. 22. Here come the new iPads, everybody!
Facebook announced an expansion to its Custom Audience marketing tool, which will help companies target specific Facebook users based on their browsing habits.
NBCUniversal has revamped its ad sales operation, organizing it around four groups of content areas: Entertainment, Live Programming, Lifestyle and Digital Video, rather than by network. “In a world of growing fragmentation and as scale has become more and more elusive,” explained NBCU president of ad sales Linda Yaccarino, “we’ve clustered our networks to capitalize on the strength of our assets.”
Microsoft‘s negative ad campaign against Google appears to be working. TV ads slamming the giant search engine caused a 45 percent favorability gap in favor of Google shrinking to 5 percent, reports AdAge, citing data collected by Microsoft. “For Microsoft, it’s a win,” said Jonathan Symonds, EVP of marketing at research firm Ace Metrix.
The NBA and Taco Bell agreed to a multi-year expansion of their marketing partnership, including a new digital and social program called “Buzzer Beaters” featuring last-second game-winning shots, reports AdAge. Fans will be able to access clips at a Taco Bell-branded section of NBA.com. The deal also calls for the brand to be featured prominently on game telecasts.

Rovio Entertainment, the company behind Angry Birds, announced that the new Angry Birds Go! gaming app will be released on Dec. 11 in partnership with Hasbro’s TELEPODS. Rovio’s SVP of Licensing, Naz Cuevas, told Cynopsis that the reason for their success is their willingness to listen to AB’s fans and players, who are highly active on Facebook and Twitter. Rovio will release an Angry Birds cartoon series and movie in 2014.
Since Snap Chat unveiled its 24-hour string of snaps/videos, Stories, brands are jumping on the opportunity. Taco Bell has already created a campaign, and Digiday reports that NowThisNews (an early adopter of Instagram videos) is going to experiment with Stories, too.

Apple has hired former Burberry CEO Angela Ahrendts in the newly created position SVP of Strategy and Operation of Retail. Ahrendts is the first woman in Apple’s senior executive ranks. Burberry most recently partnered with Apple in promoting its iPhone 5s during London Fashion Week. She will start her new role next spring.
Saban Brands announced the appointment of Gustavo Antonioni as Managing Director of Consumer Products Europe. Antonioni will step into his new role when Saban’s London office opens.

The first TV spot for Playstation 4 was unveiled yesterday, and it highlights everything the Xbox One commercial did not: video games. The mock multiplayer games stand in clear contrast to Microsoft’s positioning of Box One as more of an entertainment system. The PS4 hits shelves Nov. 15.
