Cynopsis: Kids!
10/15/08
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 15, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Stacey Snider and Steven Spielberg enter into a 7-year worldwide distribution deal between their new motion picture company and Universal Studios, which is expected to begin in 2009 and include approximately 6 films per year. Just weeks ago Snider and Spielberg exited their deal with Paramount Pictures to partner with Reliance Big Entertainment on a new movie company. Reliance will distribute the new studio’s projects in India. David Geffen negotiated the deal on behalf of the new motion picture company. As previously announced, Geffen will not be joining Snider and Spielberg in the new company.
MIPCOM NEWS
Mattel enters into a deal with Corus Entertainment to develop a new CGI animated series Hot Wheels: Battle Force 5 (26×22). Based on Mattel’s Hot Wheels brand, animation for the series is being produced by Nelvana and Nerd Corps Entertainment (The League of Super Evil, Storm Hawks). Set to launch in fall 2009, Hot Wheels: Battle Force 5 will premiere in the US on Cartoon Network’s Saturday morning block and in Canada on Teletoon’s Sunday morning action block. A worldwide marketing and merchandising (e.g. toys, licensing, online efforts etc) is being developed to support the series.
HIT Entertainment enters into a co-production deal with UK-based Annix Productions for the new 3D animated preschool property Little Charley Bear (26×7). Developed by Annix Studios, Little Charley Bear follows the irreverent teddy bear on his imaginative journey that encourages viewers to use their imagination with the help of Dave the Narrator, who is voiced by Dave Benson Philips (Play Bus, Disney Channel). Elsewhere, four seasons of Hit’s Thomas & Friends has been acquired for broadcast in China on CCTV.
Taffy Entertainment and Atlantyca Entertainment ink the first European broadcast deals for the new animated series Geronimo Stilton (26×22) with RAI (Italy) and M6 (France). The series is set to debut in fall 2009. Based on the kid’s book series of, Geronimo Stilton, the TV series is produced by Atlantyca Entertainment and MoonScoop Productions, in association with Mike Young Productions, with the participation of RAI and M6. Both broadcasters have been involved with the project from the early stages. Taffy Entertainment is a division of MoonScoop.
Barrio Sesame returns to Spain on RTVE, 30 years after it first bowed there, with Barrio Sesamo’s Juega Con Migo Sesamo (104×30), the Spanish-language version of Sesame Workshop’s Play With Me Sesame. The series launches January 2009 on RTVE’s LA 2 daily in the mornings, the series will also be available on free digital terrestrial channel, Clan TV. The deal was put together by Sesame Workshop’s longtime TV rep, Planeta.
Canada’s CarpeDiem and UK-based Uli Meyer Animation ink a co-production deal for the new 2D and CGI animated series Max in a Million (26×30).
CBBC acquires the new CGI animated series, Leon (52×3), in a pre-sale deal, from TV-Loonland. Under the deal CBBC takes the exclusive broadcast and ‘catch-up’ rights for the series in the UK. Set to deliver in December 2009, Leon is a co-production between TV-Loonland, Studio Hari (The Owl) and France 3. TV-Loonland holds all worldwide rights. Targeted to all ages, Leon revolves around the slapstick misadventures of the unluckiest lion around.
Disney-ABC-ESPN Television inks multi-year and genre deals including those for kids and families:
- Free TV channel Prima TV signs on to bring the company’s content into Romania with movies, TV series and the branded family show The Wonderful World of Disney. Prima TV licensed films for general broadcast on its channels as well as several ABC Studios series and Disney animated shows.
- Disney-ABC-ESPN Television signed a multi-year, multi-genre content agreement with Spain’s Antena 3 free TV channel, covering season 1 of Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place and free TV first runs of a range of Walt Disney Studios features.
The recently announced 3D animated series Le Petit Nicolas (52×12), based on the 1959 book by author Rene Goscinny and illustrator Jean-Jacques Sempe, has been acquired by broadcasters in Greece, Poland, Turkey and Latin America, per Variety. The series is a co-production between M6 Studio, Method Animation, Luxanimation and DQ Entertainment.
FOX International Channels‘ (FIC) BabyTV arrived on the Taiwan TV market this month with its launch on Chunghwa Telecom‘s MOD, joining other FIC newcomers, FX and FOXCRIME, on the platform.
And on a personal note … Outside of the traditional discussions about new shows, multi-platform content to support those shows, and program sales here at Mipcom, the main topics that have cropped up in most conversations about kids TV this week (and this won’t be a shocker to you) include the economic crisis as well as advertising and government-related issues regarding the kids business in the US, UK, France and Canada (to name a few), and what this means for the kid entertainment community. I’ll let you know if anyone reveals a brilliant solution to any of those. The thing that most agree upon is that the increase in co-productions and the number of co-production partners in deals to get shows produced is going to continue. The discussions also all seem to wind down to how much folks have spent here on purchasing items they accidentally left at home (keeping in mind of course that tourism is a key industry here in Cannes), some of which include (and we aren’t talking name brand fancy stuff here): $12 for simple hand lotion; $20 for deodorant; $6 for a toothbrush; and the ever popular $5 Coke Light. I’m loving France!
MORE KIDS STUFF
Cartoon Network US, Spain, Italy and Latin America have acquired all four seasons of the live-action short-form series, Thumb Wrestling Federation: TWF. Produced by Animation Collective, the series already runs on Cartoon Network Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, as well as on YTV (Canada) and BBC (UK).
MARKETING/LICENSING
HIT Entertainment signs deals with live stage show producers, EG ThemeStar and I.P. Live, to launch the live tours Thomas & Friends Live! On Stage: A Circus Comes To Town and Bob the Builder Live! Spud’s Big Mess, respectively, in the US from January 2009.
Additionally, HIT has also appointed the Promotional Partners Group as licensing agent for Thomas & Friends in China, with the first range of consumer products, from Tomy and RC2, scheduled for launch in 2009, and Children’s Fun Publishing set to launch Thomas & Friends publishing in China in early 2009 with 12 TV tie-in story book titles followed by coloring and activity titles and Thomas story library books.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Lionsgate Co-Chairman and CEO Jon Feltheimer signs a new long-term deal, which extends his role at the company through March 2014. His prior deal was to have ended in March 2011. Additionally, Michael Burns inks a new deal extending his contract as Vice Chairman until September 2011.
Phil Guerini is named VP/Marketing, Radio Disney. He will report to Michael Riley, SVP and GM. Prior to this Guerini was Executive Director/Broadcast and Strategic Marketing, Walt Disney Records.
Jennifer Buglione is named Account Executive at Sales & Winnikoff Communications, where she’ll report to co-principals, Alan Winnikoff and Carina Sayles.
