Cynopsis: Kids!
10/13/10

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 13, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Cartoon Network goes dragon crazy as it inks a deal with DreamWorks Animation for a new How To Train Your Dragon series and a previously unseen Dragon short.  Under the deal Cartoon Network acquires the worldwide broadcast TV rights to DreamWorks Animation’s new CG animated series How To Train Your Dragon, which will debut domestically and internationally beginning in 2012.  This comes on the heels of yesterday’s news that DreamWorks Animation is working on a movie sequel to how To Train your Dragon also for release in 2012. The initial How To Train Your Dragon (March 2010) feature film will release on DVD and Blu-ray this Friday.  Additionally, Cartoon Network will debut the never-before-seen How To Train Your Dragon short, The Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon (14-minutes), beginning tomorrow, October 14 at 8p.  The short, which features the original voices from the movie, follows Hiccup and his pals as they set sail in search of a new dragon.  The How To Train your Dragon TV series and movies are based on the book of the same name by Cressida Cowell.  DreamWorks Animation has not announced any TV deals for the How To Train Your Dragon movies.

Also tossing his conductors hat into the ring to acquire Thomas the Tank Engine is Kenn Viselman and his itsy bitsy Entertainment Company, and who has had discussions about purchasing Thomas the Tank Engine, which is owned by Hit Entertainment, and in turn is owned by Apax Partners.  Additionally, Viselman is said to be working to raise funds to purchase the property that he is widely credited for marketing worldwide, building the toy line and products at retail and overall helping to make popular.  Viselman would join a group of suitors for the property that reportedly includes Chorion, Viacom, Disney and Entertainment

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

DQ Entertainment (DQE) enters into a co-production deal for season two of the 3D CGI animated series Casper’s Scare School with Moonscoop Group and Classic Media.  Scheduled to begin production later this month, the second season of Casper’s Scare School has a global budget of close to US$10 million.  TF1 (France) and Cartoon Network in the US have already signed on to televise the second season, with Cartoon Network US expected to launch the second season by Halloween 2011.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The Hub will host the world premiere of singer Taylor Swift’s Journey to Fearless a three-part series of hour-long specials on October 22, 23 and 24, 7p-8p.  Produced by Hasbro Studios, the three-part special features Swift behind the scenes on her Fearless concert tour, named after her Fearless album.  Swift will release her new album, Speak Now, on October 25, 2010.

Disney XD picks up the rights to the animated feature Kung Fu Magoo, which will air on the channel in the US, German and Italy.  Based on Classic Media‘s Mr. Magoo property, Kung Fu Magoo features the voices of Dylan and Cole Sprouse (Suite Life On Deck), Kenny Mayne (ESPN), Chris Parnell (Saturday Night Live, WordGirl, Archer), and Alyson Stoner (Camp Rock, Phineas and Ferb).  Produced by Anima Estudios, Santa Domingo Films, and Classic Media, Kung Fu Magoo was penned the sibling team of Emmy and Sam Laybourne based on a story by Bob Mittenthal and Rob Sosin.  Mittenthal also served as an Executive Producer on the project.

Engine Entertainment enters into a deal with Michael Eisner’s Tornante Animation, a division of The Tornante Company, to represent the stop-motion animated series Glenn Martin, DDS, worldwide.  Currently in its second season, Glenn Martin, DDS, continues to air in the US on Nick at Nite.

The new mixed live-action and CGI animated series Mia and me (26×24) debuted last week at MipJunior, becoming the top screened show.  Featuring a look based on the art of painter Gustav Klimt, Mia and me is a co-production of Lucky Punch (a joint venture between m4e and Gerhard Hahn), Rainbow and March Entertainment.  Also serving as co-producers on the series are m4e, Hahn Film, ZDF (Germany) and Rai Fiction (Italy).  Telescreen, a unit of m4e, and Rainbow, expect to announce TV, home entertainment and product licensing deals, as well as a toy deal, soon for Mia and Me.  Mia and me is expected to premiere at the end of 2011 on ZDF and Rai.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Ludorum enters into a licensing deal with Hallmark Cards, and its subsidiary Crayola to develop a line of social expression products and arts and crafts based on its preschool property Chuggington.  Chuggington airs in the US on Disney Channel’s Playhouse Disney programming block.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Entertainment industry veterans Pam Slavin, Toni Stevens and Bill Fox have set up the new family entertainment company, Wizard Hat Productions.  Based in Toronto Canada, Wizard Hat Productions plans to create and produce live action and animated series for kids and family audiences.  The partners each have solid entertainment backgrounds: Slavin has written and produced on a range of kid-targeted series including Little Bear, Johnny Test, Rolie Polie Olie and Berenstain Bears; Stevens has produced kids show including Caillou, Arthur, Gerald McBoing Boing, Storytime with Thomas the Tank engine and Will & Dewitt; and Fox served as EVP/Communications and Corporate Development, BCE, and prior to that as SVP/Public Affairs, Bombardier.

RATINGS

The Hub, Discovery and Hasbro’s new joint kid and family-targeted network, debuted on Sunday, October 10, with a day long sneak peek at its programming, which officially launched the network taking over the channel space from Discovery Kids.  The Hub’s Total Day debut boosted ratings over the previous Sunday, October 3 (when the channel was still Discovery Kids), delivering K2-11 72,000 (+620%) and K6-11 52,000 (+643%).  In Primetime (7p-11p) the network also built over the previous week with K2-11 112,000 (+1300%) and K6-11 88,000 (+2100%).  The new network’s game series, Family Game Night (7p-8p), was the top show of the day among K2-11 145,000 and K6-11 116,000 as well as Total Viewers 2+ 267,000 and Adults 18-49 85,000.  Co-viewing (adults and kids together) is important to The Hub, which says its debut day was the top co-viewed cable network of the day with K2-11 and Adults 18-49, with 36% of K2-11 watching with and Adult 18-49.
